Mixed Media Art exhibition – opening
Garden compost, and obliquely compost makers, forms the subject matter for this exhibition.
Détruis Space
A mixed media installation at The Joinery Gallery, Dublin.
Preview September 29th 2009 from 6 to 8pm.
Show runs daily 11am to 6pm until Saturday 3rd October 2009.
Détruis Space covertly questions the viewer's commitment to addressing environmental issues: Just how 'green' is our instinctive reaction to compost?
Humorously referencing Walter De Maria's Earth Room, this installation invites the viewer to experience the dirty, frequently unpleasant process of recycling household waste. Utilizing discarded and rotting material, the work questions society's troubled relationship with environmental concerns by radically transforming the white cube gallery space into a living, breathing organic microcosm.
The artist visited homes across Ireland collecting garden compost for subsequent installation in the Joinery Gallery's white cube space. Photographs and audio recordings document the process of compost collection from homes in counties Clare, Tipperary, Kildare and Dublin. These recordings mimic the archival nature of household waste. Sunflower seeds, egg shells and garden debris clearly visible in the installation reference the homes and lives from which this compost is derived.
