If anyone deserves reparations, it's the poor BBC licence-fee-paying public, white and otherwise, who've funded Lenny Henry's alleged comedy career and racial grift for decades, argues Steven Tucker.

Dublin Community TV (DCTV) July Schedule Is Out Now.

category dublin | arts and media | news report author Tuesday June 30, 2009 10:24author by dctv Report this post to the editors

See What's On Next Month on DCTV

It sure is turning out to be a hot summer, so you’d really want to be given a decent reason for staying in and watching TV. In that case, it’s a good thing the new DCTV schedule is out.

http://www.dctv.ie/main/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/july...9.pdf

It’s Our First Birthday>>

DCTV celebrates the first anniversary of it’s launch this month. It’s a moment to fess up and admit how proud we are of the varied content we create and broadcast despite our limited means.

A revolutionary anarchist feminist group, starving film students, and a mother and daughter duo passionate about recycling, just illustrate a few of the groups who have taken advantage of the unique broadcasting space we’ve carved open since our first birthday.

Continuing with this success, DCTV has arranged and organized a large project called Crew TV, which we will carry out throughout the month of July. The project is the culmination of months of training of fourteen young people ages 16 to 21 into the filming and producing of their own program.

We think we’ve succeeded in our goal to develop a rapport with the community that overcomes traditional barriers to provide unique opportunities to groups that’d never receive the time of day from the mainstream media.

Over the summer we’ll continue with this work, and we hope you’ll continue to support it.

HOW TO STAY IN TOUCH////

If you have any questions about the work we do in DCTV, then email us at dctv@dctv.ie or use our contact form and we’ll get you an answer.
If you are looking to be kept updated, then join our Facebook group by clicking over to here.

Our website contains regular updates and bulletins too, so subscribe to our RSS feeds via your email or reader.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO///

* June was a very busy month, with nearly every day taken over in the studio with episodes of our Community in a Studio project. It’s nearly reaching conclusion and all episodes will eventually get an airing in our Fresh block.
* We are still soliciting feedback from volunteers and members that have worked with us in the past while. If you have a spare five minutes, pleas make your way over to our online survey and let us know what you think.
* We’ve a number of events coming up this month. It’s one year since our launch, and to celebrate we’ll be holding an open day and members induction in the studio. We’ll be following this with a social event and screening of a selected set of highights from our recent productions.
* Crew TV started today in our studio. It’s a youth project involving fifteen people aged from 16 to 21. They’ll be shown how to use our studio and producing a number of shows within a show.
* At the end of July we’ll be turning all of our schedule over to a special season of Latin American content. So pay special attention to our Independent Media Block this month for a taste of that a season.

PROGRAMME FOCUS>>

Crafta Webb: A Mysterious Village

At various times nicknamed Hyde Park Corner, New Town and Poverty Street, the origin, history and demise of Crafta Webb is a mystery. This ‘lost village,’ once home to 60 people, was rumoured to owe its origins to the ‘one night house,’ when, it’s said, erecting a chimney and smoking it by dawn meant you could claim rights. Local folklore suggests it was established by impoverished economic migrants who came here hoping to benefit from a charitable trust to assist the parish poor, set up by the wealthy Bredwardine resident, George Jarvis. Working with over 120 people from the community, the makers of this piece aimed to convey the story of Crafta Webb through film, drama and documentary.

Watch it online at the UK Community Channel.

Highlights This Month>>

Here’s the cream of the crop for July. More descriptions can be found over throughout our site..

the miami
entertainment//
The Miami showband will never be forgotten. Through a strange era when Irish entertainment was based on creating carbon copies of cultural imports from other environs they elicted excitement from dancers and generated profits for promoters. In this documentary Northern Visons draw us back in to that past, prepare to clap your hands and stomp your feet.

rhapsody of the absurd
independent media//
This poetic documentary used scenes from two outstanding episodes of the struggle for land in the countryside, and in the city to contrast property rights and social rights. It’s a long struggle through which many Brazilians are living hard days.

Men of Steal

digital stories//
NvTv presents the first ever televised history of James Mackie & Sons, once the world’s leading textile machinery manufacturer. Former Mackie employees and local historians tell their stories and explain how Mackies grew from humble beginnings to become a world leading engineering firm. The programme has sad stories and plenty of legendary Belfast humour, as people explain what it was like during Belfast’s industrial heyday.

stop an phreas
around the country//
A 25 minute piece following the last months of La Nua. The Irish Language newspaper came into existence in 1984 and to come to an end in December 2008. With interviews from Donall Mac Giolla Choill, Mairtin O Muilleoir, Eoghan O’Neill and Gearoid O Cairealleain.

KOTJ:Therapy
entertainment//
With a keen pop edge, a skewed sense of humour and a willingness to draw inspiration from diverse sources is it any surprise Therapy are still rattling ear drums all these years later? Kick Out The Jam’s has the low down from the north’s noise merchants.
