When a man in Dublin stabs a police officer while shouting "Allahu Akbar" you can be pretty sure it's not the work of an indigenous Irishman. So why are the media at pains to pretend it is, asks Andrew Devine.

British TV grows more and more unwatchable with each passing day. That might be because BAFTA is on a mission to transform every TV show into climate propaganda ? and it's just stepped up a gear, says Steven Tucker.

Protest to Support Communites and Jobs

Community Workers and Activists will be protesting Governments cutbacks that are threatening communities, jobs and projects. Wednesday 3rd June, SIPTU, Liberty Hall, Dublin 1. 12 noon.

SIPTU Community Sector Branch

FAO: All Community Workers and Activist.

As you know, the Government is slashing expenditure across a range of services and programmes. Unfortunately the Community Sector is becoming the focus for the Department of Finance and their guillotine approach to funding

To protest against current cutbacks and to protect jobs, services and communities into the future, the SIPTU Community Branch is organising a mass meeting for community workers and activists on:

Wednesday 3rd June

12 noon

SIPTU, Liberty Hall, Dublin 1

The general meeting will be followed by a march to the Department of Finance so that they can hear our message loud and clear: “They Say Cut Backs – We Say Fight Back”. The Community Sector cannot be seen as a soft touch.

Already a number of areas have had their budgets reduced:

- Severe reduction for Drug Task Force Projects
- Training and material budgets cut for Community Employment
- Local Partnerships budgets cut up to 16%
- Community Childcare still struggles under the Subvention Scheme
- Overseas Development NGO’s funding slashed
- Community Development Projects funding cut by up to 15%
- Supports for the community and voluntary sector; 32% cut
- Supports for older people are down to €727,000 from €4.3 million

The day of action is open to all union members and non – members in the Community Sector.

If you have any queries on the campaign or SIPTU in general, please contact an organiser at:

Hi !

A very successful trade union protest meeting and march was held yesterday (Wednesday 3rd June 2009) in Dublin . A crowd which was estimated by some of those taking part in the action at between three and five-thousand strong marched through Dublin city centre in the early afternoon , and received fantastic support from motorists and on-lookers.

Thanks!
Sharon.

Today was a Great start.
We should walk in the shoes of the pensioners, who managed to get a reversal on medical cards, A few ideas:
SIPTU, IMPACT and other unions should build for cross sector solidarity linking the community sector and the public sector through public meetings
Community Groups and public sector workers in local areas should organise public meetings and picketing of Government TD clinics
This should culminate in a major day of solidarity and protest in September for community groups and public sector workers together on a weekday.
Also there is a great video and photo feature of todays march by Vanessa O'Sullivan on www.swp.ie
