Why Are the Irish Media Ignoring an Apparent Islamist Knife Attack? Sat Aug 09, 2025 09:00 | Andrew Devine When a man in Dublin stabs a police officer while shouting "Allahu Akbar" you can be pretty sure it's not the work of an indigenous Irishman. So why are the media at pains to pretend it is, asks Andrew Devine.

Yet another call for left unity, but this time from a republican.
Interesting call for left unity here in Daily Ireland. This time it is from a republican source. Follows on from a series previous calls from other sources on the left.
Time for lovely rainbow coalition of the left
GEARÓID Ó CAIREALLÁIN
"But what about a rainbow coalition of the left? Just say Sinn Féin, Labour, the Green Party and the various socialists and independents like Jim Higgins (sic) and Tony Gregory got together to form a real alternative." GEARÓID Ó CAIREALLÁIN
"But what about a rainbow coalition of the left? Just say Sinn Féin, Labour, the Green Party and the various socialists and independents like Jim Higgins and Tony Gregory got together to form a real alternative.
Yes, I realise they don’t have the votes to do diddley squat at present, but if they formed a rainbow coalition of the Left and announced that they were going forward as one grouping in the next election with a view to forming the next government, would they not attract support and votes from everywhere.
The only reason why I think it’s worth a go is because I still – naively, perhaps – believe that the above mentioned parties and politicians are the only parties and politicians who might well sit down to help the plain people of Ireland achieve the kind of Ireland envisaged by the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising.
Further, they have the big advantage of never having been given the chance to do better than Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the PD. My beautiful, rainbow coalition of the left may well turn out to be just as big a shower of gobshites as the rest of them, but then again, they may not.
The plain people of Ireland, the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, we all deserve something better – but then, are the politicians and parties mentioned above be capable of going for it? "
