category dublin | environment | event notice author Wednesday March 01, 2006 13:54author by Katia Falagiarda - Latin America Solidarity Centre Report this post to the editors

Latin America Week 2006

Latin America Week (LAW) 2006 will take place from April 22 to April 28 2006 all around the country. LAW is organised by The Latin America Solidarity Centre.

Latin America Week is a vibrant and exciting event, comprising a Dublin conference, a speaker’s tour or Ireland and many other educational, cultural and campaigning events.

The year focuses on 'Ownership of Natural Resources in Latin America and Ireland', with particular emphasis on water and gas issues. There will be learning, debate and exchange on the human development consequences of exploitation of natural resources; direct democratic control of water and other resources; privatisation as a condition for IFI loans and aid; future water shortages in Ireland due to climate change/greenhouse gases and on sustainable development.

Guest speakers visiting from Latin America will include Ricardo Buitrón from Acción Ecológica in Ecuador www.accionecologica.org. This organisation has worked in on the petroleum crisis in the Amazon as well as on many other ecological issues, including water. There will also be a speaker from the Bolivian Coordinadora de Defensa del Agua y de la Vida. This social movement has been prominent in the water and gas wars.

Latin America Week Events:

22 April, Liberty Hall Dublin: Latin America Week Conference (Time TBC)
