From Belfast to Scotland to Dublin {BSD}

From Belfast to Scotland to Dublin {BSD}

Dear Friends here are some important events upcoming in the next few weeks.

Firstly with a change of venue

1} For various reasons the Make Poverty History {MPH} rally has now been changed to Custom House Square

'On Saturday June 4th, Custom House Square, Laganside in Belfast will be the scene of a major Make Poverty History rally, one in a series in the UK entitled ‘Motiv8 4 G8’ in the run up to what promises to be a mammoth gathering in Edinburgh on July 2nd just prior to the G8 Summit.

Celebrities who may appear or who have directly endorsed the event include Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, Ronan Keating, Graham Norton and Natasha Beddingfield'.

Friends the practicalities of the rally have all but been sorted, and with just a week or so to go - with only a few of the final minor issues to sort out such as Stewarts, sending out of press releases, etc, everything is ready..

So can persons circulate the new venue as above - and to let people know about this. There could be possibly thousands in attendance.

Also if persons want to go to the G8 MPH rally in Scotland a list of buses can be found on the MPH website attached.

Many others will also be staying on for other G8 rallies and protests and the largest group to organise to travel from around Ireland for this is those supportive of the Grassroots groups {non party aligned} which I and many others from Belfast will be travelling with. If persons want to stay on for the other G8 protests after the MPH rally then contact me at carlindavid@hotmail.com - for information on travel etc.

MPH contact details on Website for press, MPH buses etc -

2} Secondly on June 18th - again can this important event be circulated for support

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
AGAINST RACISM

Let us stay! Let us work!

JUSTICE FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS
Saturday 18 June, 12.30 pm
GPO, O’Connell Street, Dublin
Organised by RESIDENTS AGAINST RACISM
NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST RACISM

Michael McDowell’s deportation machine has got worse than ever in recent months. He has sent his snatch squads into schools, attempting to drag children away from their classmates and teachers. He has separated mothers from their children. He has torn people away from communities they are now a part of, ignoring calls for compassion from their friends and neighbours.

Asylum seekers in Ireland are forced to live on only €19.10 a week. They are banned from working or studying. People who are ready, willing and able to work are condemned by the government to compulsory unemployment and poverty.

His ideological obsession with deporting people makes Michael McDowell unfit to be in charge of the asylum system. The system should be taken out of the hands of politicians altogether, and run by a body—such as the Human Rights Commission—committed to fair play for asylum seekers.
Exploitation of immigrant workers is widespread in Ireland, based largely on the current work permit system. The permit is given to the employer, not the worker, which ties you to a single company with no right to change jobs. If the boss doesn’t renew your permit, you have no legal right to stay in Ireland.

Recently, popular protest forced McDowell to do a U-turn, and reverse the deportation of Kunle Elukanlo, a school student from Dublin. In the run-up to World Refugee Day, 18 June is a chance to show that not everyone is prepared to stand by and allow state racism to continue.

• Stop the deportations
• Give asylum seekers the right to work
• Take the asylum system out of the politicians’ hands
• Take the work permits away from the employer

Residents Against Racism was set up in 1998 to fight against state racism, and to oppose all manifestations of racism. We have successfully campaigned in support of refugees facing deportation and other forms of harassment from the state. Our supporters include Joe Costello TD, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, Joe Higgins TD, Ciarán Cuffe TD, Finian McGrath TD, Michael O’Reilly of the ATGWU, and many other individuals and groups. We are not connected to any political party, and do not receive any state funding.

Last Saturday had seen a WSM delegate meeting {delegates from around Ireland} held in Belfast city centre,

At that meeting it was agreed to the formation of a WSM branch in Belfast, to which I am now a member.

This means branches now North and South.

At that founding meeting, it included myself along with other ‘long term activists’ from Belfast.

The development of both my politics and activism has lead me here. From the SWP, through to essential campaigning with street seen {and also time to think of my political direction} to Organise! and now finally to the WSM.

Our workings with Organise will be fraternal, and with more experienced and savvy heads within both Organise! and the new WSM branch, fraternal relationships, and friendships remain.

Indeed I have an old photo -10 years ago marching in Dublin behind the WSM banner.

I will go into more detail on April 4th in which I start a short online diary for 6 months until my 37th birthday on Oct 4th.

Until then

As the Irish language stands at the moment, culture minister Edwin Poots is doing everything in his power to erode the language in the face of international and European legislation designed to protect it.

According to this legislation the minister is supposed to 'promote, nourish and protect the Irish language'.

In protecting the language, the Irish language budget has virtually been frozen and is not even in line with inflation

In nourishing the language Lá Nua the Irish language daily is in threat of closure from March 1st.

To promote the Irish language, the Irish language broadcasting fund is due for closure in 2009, funding for the Gaelaras in Derry is also to be stopped in 2009.

Over the next three years Ulster Scots is to receive at least £1,000,000 more than Irish.

This is just the start.

Mr Poots states that by introducing an Irish language act it will actually stop the growth of the language as he thinks that without it the Irish language community has grown and developed substantially.

Every penny the Irish language community has received has been fought hard for and we are still fighting!!!!

The growth of the language has been from the groundswell of speakers, learners and lovers of the language promoting it for themselves, tax payers that pay for the Minister Poots' budget I believe.

Is it really that his opposition to the language is based on reality or is it a desperate attempt to relive the colonial misrule which caused so many problems for so many years.

What other reason is there for not promoting a beautiful and ancient language. You decide.

It is clear we will have to go on fighting. We will do this in a positive and determined way because this really is what the language is about.

So please join us on Saturday and show that we won't lie down easy.

Press Statement

"Tightened Siege on Gaza Reaches Unprecedented Levels and
Endangers the Life of 1.5 Million Civilians"

Israel has imposed a severe siege on the Gaza Strip since Hamas' winning of the parliamentary elections in January, 2006. Furthermore, Israel has tightened this siege following Hamas military domination over the Gaza Strip in June, 2007 when Israel declared that the Gaza Strip is an enemy entity.

Two weeks ago, Israel has tightened the siege and embargo imposed on the Gaza Strip reaching unprecedented levels. This action included various sanctions such as: cut-off fuel and electricity provisions to Gaza as well as all other energy resources. Israel has also imposed strict closure on all Gaza Strip border crossings, preventing movement of civilians including patients' for medical services. Such procedures led to entire shut-down of the sole energy producing station in the Gaza Strip, two days ago. As a consequence, Gaza is drowning in darkness whereas electricity from all homes, industrial, and health facilities in the Gaza Strip was cut-off entirely.

The electricity cut-off, therefore, has paralyzed all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip as water supply couldn’t reach the homes of Palestinians; elevators in the high-rise towers have not functioned properly; and household electrical instruments have been shut down completely. Nonetheless, what is more critical is the water and sewage systems are about to shut down in addition to electricity generators in major hospitals and sanitation vehicles. All such matters warn of a humanitarian, health and environmental crisis.

Due to the denial of deliveries of vital supplies of food, fuel and humanitarian aids to the Gaza Strip, there has been a crisis in obtaining necessary food supplies for the people in Gaza. This situation added to the already existing crisis due to the fact that 85% of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip depends mainly on the humanitarian aids for securing their basic needs of survival. Furthermore, the stoppage of electricity and fuel as well as flour cut-off have caused even more paralysis in the bakeries in the Gaza Strip, thus preventing the Palestinians from receiving their necessary needs of bread.

All forms and consequences of the siege imposed by Israel aggravate the Palestinians' sufferings in Gaza Strip, coinciding with the economic crisis and high rate of poverty and unemployment. The new procedures of siege have led to significant rise of burdens on the Palestinian civilians and families, as well as an emergence of a new wave of feelings of panic, anger, suppression and helplessness. As a result, the psychological sufferings of people are intensifying in the presence of the economic hardships.

Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) is gravely concerned over the continuation of the tightened siege and isolating Gaza from the outside world. Further, GCMHP warns against the critical humanitarian, health and mental ramifications of this siege on the civilians which threaten their life and significantly deepen their suffering. Such consequences are becoming more apparent as reports warning of the death of patients in intensive care units and deterioration of the health conditions of chronic disease patients including cancer and kidney failure.

In this critical time, GCMHP calls upon the international community, human rights organizations and all peace activists around the world to hold their moral and legal responsibilities to end the Israeli inhumane siege and its repercussions that reach the levels of war crimes. Additionally, GCMHP demands the international community not to remain silent towards the Israeli crimes and to immediately intervene and pressure Israel to end its siege and collective punishment imposed on the Gaza Strip that threatens the life of 1.5 million innocent civilians.

It will soon be May again and so let us show once again that visible and vocal unity like last year – or indeed like ‘06

Link - https://www.indymedia.ie/article/75760

Yes May ‘Day –

As I had written at the time

‘In the last few months, unity, solidarity and 'Collective Representation have ensured strength for victory on various issues.

Indeed it has shown that if we march and speak in one voice then that voice is stronger, and that strength for victory grows.

It is a day where we should March as one’

And of course there will be meetings afterwards and conferences held – by many groups, as is always.

Indeed I will speak the words of an ICTU official {whatever our probs with officialdom} who referred to Belfast in his speech at a rally in the South of Ireland.

As in regard to May in Belfast – well on this we can stand shoulder to shoulder.

‘We trade unionists do not exclude people. At our May Day parade each year in Belfast, we welcome everyone as a potential participant. Diehard unionists and nationalists, Seventh Day Adventists and Anarchists, every hue and pigment and orientation and opinion – all are welcome - because we understand that together we are stronger'.

Yes, many from many places look upon and refer to Belfast at such a time

So it is a day to build for in all such regards, as to send out the clearest of signs to all those that watch on -that Belfast Practically, Visibly and Collectively is once again in Unity – and on the march.

And in doing so we have everything to gain -

As Unity - is strength

Let get Working on it!

1 pm Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich to the city centre.

Here’s some important information about the next big event in the ‘Tá’ project.

Spread the word and come out and show your support for the Irish language and diversity!

In the past number of years, the Irish language community has grown and developed. More and more people have felt they could show their interest in the language. New schools and new projects have been established. But in recent months, the Irish language has been under non-stop attack.

POBAL has launched a new campaign to give a chance for everyone to show their support for the Irish language. Anyone can do it - individuals, Irish language groups, schools, local councils, residents’ associations, partnerships, teachers, ethnic minorities, trade unionists, artists – you name it!

We have posters and flyers and can get these to anyone who would like them. If you can give an hour or two to get involved in the work of the project, give us a shout 028 90 438132 or eolas@pobal.org

What is this thread about????????

author by Davy Carlinpublication date Mon Dec 17, 2007 18:57author address author phone Report this post to the editors

As we end the year 2007 I look back at the last while and to those I had worked with in MPH and after, and in doing so I remember many good and genuine people. For oneself to work with those, many of which who worked within an organization or who themselves held core Christian beliefs was a good experience. Indeed through the 'ARN and other such campaigns I had worked with those of many faiths, and none.

Yet despite Religious difference many I had found hold a sincere heart and genuine belief in the betterment for all of humanity.

I of course have my problems with ‘Organised Religion’ and would hold my own understanding as to how that Jesus as written and believed in by many would see the world today. He was a radical man who suffered for his belief, and was against Empire and for the rights and justice for those most in need. Indeed the wars in his name, the crushing of other believers, the trinkets and wealth accumulated, the images and idols, I believe would have not stood easy with him.

Yet the progression of humanity has thrown up many challenges under the different systems in which we have and are ruled – and as I had written from my earliest of writing’s, that such teaching from this Jesus where molded into the system of the time to fall in with the status quo – as has been the case in continuum {as others do with other radicals and Revolutionaries of once times whom the wish to cement their present status quo with - if such persons have still many believers.}

Whatever the case, humanity progresses on the path it sets itself. I also believe there is much that humanity has still to understand not only about the world we live in but indeed about ourselves.

Yet these are the great questions of Why and How, and many search for such answers. Yet much indeed is down to belief - and for many as to how we learn from our mistakes to attempt to make the world a better place. Much self interest is against us, and many have suffered to bring change.

Yet as stated I have found many sound citizens who hold Christian Values who are good, genuine and caring people. Indeed on ‘Religion, - several songs have long been etched in my mind as I had written previous, but the last one I write off, has burned the longest and the deepest, and indeed it is read by many as ‘Holy – but it and its history held - holds many other meanings and messages for many.

And at this time of year, and in thinking of the many I had campaigned with in MPH - what better way than to leave 2007 than with its words.

Written in 1847’

Indeed various lines of this have held great meaning for many over the 160’ years - this Christmas Eve.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,

Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,

With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,

Here came the wise men from Orient land.

The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our Friend!
He knows our need—to our weakness is no stranger.

Behold your King; before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend!
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is peace.

Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His Name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy Name!

Christ is the Lord! O praise His name forever!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!

Event below – and a few points on other matters for those interested.

1} Dear Friends,

Please circulate amongst relevant networks and attend, indeed come out on your lunch break with colleagues or come along with friends and/or family {as I will be doing} and join us at this event.
Join us at our Belfast rally on October 17th as we Stand Up Against Poverty and attempt to break a Guinness World Record in the process!

On October 17, millions of people will Stand Up all over the world, in an attempt to break the world record for the largest demonstration ever.

These global demonstrations will call on the rich and powerful to honour the commitments they made to ending global poverty at the G8 Summit in Gleneagles two years ago.

When: October 17, Wednesday 1pm
Where: Front Steps, Queen's University Student's Union, Belfast

Choirs have also been invited to the Belfast event, to make a unique contribution to the Stand Up/Speak Out global campaign.

For those interested --- - ---

2} I read the continued ongoing saga from upon the Hill over the issue of the Giant’s Causeway. Indeed whatever further unfolds, or not, there is one thing that can be certain, and that is that this site must be kept in public hands and out of the hands of the private sector.

To that end, all support must be given to secure that.

3} And on the issue of the Irish Language Act, I read much about the economics of the issue.

– What price do you put on Rights or Justice, how cheap can they be secured?

- Indeed -

{Despite that, it is a point and a debate that I will take on and come back to in the time ahead, as indeed cost would eventually be low, as noted elsewhere in similar situations}

Yet such opposition {to an Act} goes much deeper than that; indeed I believe opposition to such is ‘ingrained into some. Yet this matter needs dealt with, and dealt with not through the politics of fear but through that of understanding, and that it is indeed a matter of rights as part of Irish heritage and culture. Of course given that it is supported ‘predominately by ‘one side, as opposed to the ‘other, it of course is used and opposed in that regard.

We need to move on from such -.

Whatever the case in the present, I believe there will be such an Act. Indeed it would be better if such could be agreed in a fitting manner that could be an example to all, but whatever the case, and from ‘wherever and ‘however it does happen, I believe that it will eventually happen.

Why?

Well it shall happen similar to those rights won and injustices righted – by those throughout Humanity and History who had never wavered in their stance against such wrongs and injustices. ‘D

The first such Belfast Anarchist Book fair has taken place. Hundreds of books, a variety of meetings and healthy debate and discussion were had by all.

I had noticed quite a few ‘activists that I had not seen in a while there, and I had got to meet others from around the country and further afield. Many others who attended I had not known including a guy who had been in Seattle and for years had been doing his own small pamphlets and publications to get the message out. I have since read an article he did on Christianity, which was interesting, and will be in contact.

For him, living out in the sticks he thought the event was brill! And with his stall by the door in the first room, he estimated between 120 – 150 came throughout the day, some to browse most to partake.

The event itself I thought was excellent, the debate was good and solidarity was forthcoming for a number of workers in struggle and campaigns. It also showed that there is a growing thirst for such ideas and ways of organising local.

Indeed Anarchism and Libertarian Socialism has put down its mark in Belfast at the first such event - which will only grow in the time ahead.

The Just Books Collective and Organise! will host the first Belfast anarchist bookfair from the 31st to 1st September in Belfast Unemployment Resource Centre 45/47 Donegall Street. The bookfair has something for everyone interested in working class struggles and finding out about anarchism. From books on labour and Irish history, struggles across the globe, radical thinkers, anarchist, socialist and feminist books and pamphlets, t-shirts, badges and much more. There will also be meetings on the history of anarchism in Belfast, workplace organising, international workers struggles, resisting the water charges, Justice for Dockers, and the struggle for women's right to choose both north and south.

Sean Matthews states: "Despite the public spin of a 'new era' in the north our communities are being torn apart by property developers and ongoing sectarianism, meanwhile we are expected to bend over backwards for the bosses who are getting rich off everyone else's backs.

The bookfair seeks to highlight that working class people can and are fighting back against capitalist exploitation independent of politicians. The bookfair also seeks to promote a vision of a new society based on working class people running their own communities and workplaces for our benefit."

Organise! Members who live in the Upper Springfield area {Turf Lodge, Ballymurphy, Springhill, where out last week delivering ‘We Won’t Pay Campaign’ leaflets. 100’s where delivered, with a great response around the New Barnsley estate.

More activism in planned locally, with Organise and We Won’t Pay members covering many more areas.

Indeed water charges bills have now been postponed for two years. This has been because of the widespread opposition to the charges and the huge support for mass non-payment which has been built by the We Won’t Pay Campaign over the years.

3} Upcoming Belfast Bookfair-

The Just Books Collective and Organise! will be hosting the First such Belfast Anarchist Bookfair.

With the growth in both the interest of Anarchism and in membership locally, this is at the perfect time.

Now, my Online Diary, I have put up its final input.

But in the time ahead a new Blog will begin, again as a further continuance of a personal record of grassroots activism in Belfast, over the coming several years.

I vision it including many more such street mobilisations, some small, others mass, with of course, a march upon Stormont, and to the Establishment, on such issues as Water Charges, Privatisation, and against the rife landlordism and Profiteers reeking havoc on working class communities and the environment.

In many regards there is a 'Peace, a step forward from the continual and useless endless slaughter, which many played their part to bring around –

,And with that comes the ‘Process, and therefore

- a Dividing Road -

-as for some that means electoralism and Stormont, and where they had wished to be , but for the grassroots - it will be a Process of challenging and mobilising against the neo liberalism that will be implemented, by that,

Water charges -

‘Well, over quite a years now, many have been hard at work to ensure all necessary preparations had been done to bring this to an end.

The final ingredient in all of this is that that I had coined several years back at the start of the ARN – and it is that of the{PVC}, Practical, Visible and Collective stand and unity.

Indeed all the pieces are in place and all and every ‘campaign etc are already showing the support for the end of March, for the march.– indeed with the years of work put in by some on this matter, there will be no better opportunity offered in the time ahead - - - to show our united opposition to such.

And so, with the {PVC stand forthcoming} we state that this additional Tax needs to be scrapped, - not a year down the line or so - but Now!’ ‘D’

Dear friends

‘The daily table tennis politics {which presently goes for governance here} continues, and will intensify in coming time. As citizens watch on we can see that there are those who increasingly see 'victory as getting something for their side, or through attempting to block something on the ‘other side {in effect Sectarianising issues}. The reality though is not only is this quite sad but in the medium to long term it will actually come back from the past to haunt’. ‘D

For many on these networks who consider themselves 'progressive, in the sense of reaching out and seeking equality and justice for all citizens, we have also seen the issue of Water charges having also been moved into play in recent time – and another ‘Deal – in the making.

Below is statement from the We Won’t Pay Campaign in that regard

PRESS RELEASE – 13/3/07

The We Won’t Pay Campaign has warned against a possible ‘fudge’ on water charges after recent statements from Secretary of State Peter Hain and DUP leader Ian Paisley indicated that a deal is being prepared on the controversial introduction of the water tax.

Gary Mulcahy, secretary of the We Won’t Pay Campaign stated “People should be very wary of any announcement from the Government or the DUP claiming to have ‘dealt with’ the issue of water charges. Nothing less than the complete scrapping of water charges will be acceptable.

“If Peter Hain or Ian Paisley think that making meters available for everyone is ‘dealing’ with the issue they need to think again. Water charges in any form are a double tax. We won’t pay neither by direct debit, cheque or coins in a meter.

“The real reason they are discussing this is that they are aware of the massive support for non-payment. Non-payment is winning. After 1st of April we need to stand firm and refuse to pay until the charge is ‘decommissioned’ lock stock and barrel!”

'An absolutely essential few weeks ahead.

Dear Friends -We Won’t Pay Conference in Belfast.

A Brief Update -

One Hundred and Forty people from the ‘We Won’t Pay Campaigns around the North attended the Conference, which had also seen TV crews, journalists, radio stations, Documentary makers etc in attendance such is the importance of the issue - and of the 'We Won’t Pay Campaign which is at the forefront of the growing Movement against these charges.

From working class mainly Catholic and Protestant areas we came, from Belvior Estate to Lagmore Estate, From the Falls Road to the Shankill Road, from around the North we came together to continue the Movement forward. People came with feed back from their local areas and groups others came to propose their local group affiliation to the We Wont Pay Campaign, and more.

And so as we continue the Momentum forward we have seen more become involved -and had even seen the issue put to the fore front of the recent election, such was that Momentum already created and citizens opposition to such.

And so here are some of the motions passed

Please build for this Demonstration and make it big, posters leaflets etc can be downloaded from our website as can all other info be found in due course,

In Solidarity Davy Carlin -, Organise! and Won’t Pay Campaign.

MOTIONS –

1} This Conference agrees to support the proposals from recent negotiations between the 'We Won’t Pay Campaign and the trade unions regarding building for a major demonstration in Belfast on Sunday 31st March. The compromise of the 'We Won’t Pay Campaign to open up our demonstration is a sign of the Campaign’s willingness to work in a fraternal fashion with all forces who support mass non payment of water charges.

This Conference agrees that all local groups commit to mass leafleting and postering to help build the attendance of the demonstration and that each local group make We Won’t Pay Campaign banners with the name of their area

2} Unity

This Conference endorses the call made by the We Won’t Pay Campaign for the building of a single mass non – payment campaign which unites everyone who agrees with the need to build membership based, democratically organised non payment groups in local communities. -

Other proposals passed included expanding the Officers Committee from 4 officers to 8 officers due to the We Won’t Pay further growth, and this very well may expand further in coming times as Momentum is further created. Also several citizens with experience in legal matters has been formalised in a working group as has several others into a fundraising working group. Again other working groups may very well be established in coming time as the Momentum grows and need requires such.

Further info will be found on our site in coming times, but that is the Gist.

In the meantime I would urge all opposed to this double charge to organise a We Won’t Pay Group in their local area, put up posters, give out leaflets etc. And don’t forget to circulate details of the rally and to bring friends and family etc – AS I WILL BE DOING!

Let’s put our feet onto the street, let’s prepare to defeat this charge

If it is done right, then there are no ifs and no buts, it can be beaten.

For info, and to join with us in the we ‘Won’t Pay Campaign, and for interviews etc go onto our site –

http://www.wewontpaycampaign.com/

On a personal note I know many on these networks have been on the Huge Anti Sectarian, Anti War, Anti Racism, and Make Poverty History demos in the North in recent years – well its time for another, and it can happen if we prepare now.

So let’s get organised, spread the word and be there!

As Always, In Solidarity Davy Carlin

2} We won’t Pay Campaign

-The end of March, with no ifs and no buts, is indeed the End Game or the Beginning, whatever way one chooses to look at it –

And so with that coming introduction of the charge, an update of the last 2 weeks or so.

The We Won’t Pay Campaign which has been to the forefront of the opposition to the water charges is an ‘ACTIVIST’ based campaign, and with that, I believe, that our resources and time is prioritised in the weeks ahead as below.

In recent times groups have been leafleting and signing people up within many local communities against the charges, {Scores of thousands have now signed up to date under the banner of the ‘We Won’t Pay Campaign}.

2a} CUMMUNITY ACTIVISM –

For example, in the last few weeks within my local area of the Upper Springfield 8 – 10 of us have met up and had did the whole of the Ballymurphy estate and beyond with excellent feed back.

This is being reflected in many ‘communities around the North.

2b} CENTRAL ACTIVISM AND DIRECT ACTION –

The We Won’t Pay Campaign - A victory won, after it was announced that Echo Managed Services, the company responsible for recovering unpaid water charges on behalf of the new water company Northern Ireland Water Ltd., had cancelled its much publicised open recruitment day.

Secretary of the We Won’t Pay Campaign Gary Mulcahy speaking at the protest today warned Echo that today’s protest was the first of many to target its headquarters on Upper Queen St in Belfast.

Mr. Mulcahy said “This Company is a consortium of multi-national companies who specialise in debt recovery for water companies in Britain. It is a scandal that the Government is paying Echo £70million of taxpayer’s money to harass and intimidate people into paying water charges, which we already pay for through the rates. We would also like to remind people that this is the same company that labelled working class communities in Northern Ireland as being ‘Rock Bottom’.

We want to send a clear message to Echo today that they will not get away with threatening people into paying the water double-tax. People are not rock bottom, but on the contrary are rock solid behind the We Won’t Pay Campaign’s call for mass non-payment of these charges.”

2c} LARGE SCALE MOBILISATION –

2d} DEMOCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY –

WE WON’T PAY CONFERENCE

Transport House, High St (opposite Alfred Clock)

People from estates, towns and cities across Northern Ireland will gather at the We Won’t Pay Campaign Conference in Belfast to review the work of the Campaign to date and discuss the future work.

It will be an excellent opportunity to hear how the different local We Won’t Pay groups are organising. Guest speakers from the Anti-Poll Tax Federation from Britain and the Anti-Water Charges Federation from Dublin will also outline the experiences of organising successful mass non-payment campaigns.

This is a unique opportunity for people to gather and discuss how to build local We Won’t Pay groups and decide the priorities of the Campaign.

November 1st - an essential meeting

1} With the founding meeting of BAWI not long ago and a general agreement on how to move forward, with various forms of activism etc - this meeting is therefore an essential ingredient in that. Points will be made by the speakers {And I will ‘Chair - so activists can be ensured that all will be afforded the opportunity to have their full say} - then it will be opened up for all to have that say, and all should.

Indeed it is meetings like this that can help cement the local foundations and provide that direction for a long time to come, in our course of ‘common cause, activism and solidarity - for the BAWI and a stand against the brutality of War.

So we all have got a part to play.

Well several hundred people attended the Northern Coalitions latest mobilisation in Belfast’s Botanic Gardens – a continuance of such a stance

A number of important meetings and mobilisations that I am to attend are upcoming – ‘Some, are listed below,

Firstly, though on the personal, I must say that my partner and I really enjoyed the concert, as stated above in previous post, and it actually had several differing themes to it apart from Rachmaninov’s Second – so will attend such again.

- Indeed as stated, that day was to be the end of an era, – of ones life, and therefore a date, 'October - Friday 13th 2006' {‘important numbers } that will indeed be definitively remembered for many many years to come for the ending of that old era and the beginning of a new one, - within ones life – and so it was and is -.

Jesus I have not even lifted or had a craving for a cig etc since then!

Therefore, for me, that journey of old is over and a new one begins -

On the Coalition

http://www.makepovertyhistory-ni.org/

http://www.standagainstpoverty.org/

The above Northern Coalition has long agreed and will continue to do work well into next year with various other events possibly to be organised – with still more hard graft to be put in

-And like all the movements I have been involved in over the years I and other such activists have worked visible and otherwise to move such forward for the betterment of all our citizens, and more especially, for the most vulnerable and those who had feared to speak out.

Yet within much we had seen grassroots support and full participation as essential, and throughout such I had met many many sound and progressive activists from across the Movements and wider civic society {from many backgrounds} with the same understanding and vision, to move such forward.

All such Movements and the Past is recorded elsewhere on this site and as stated I will come back once more in Nov in my Nov diary to wrap up various points.

4} Northern Coalition - Stand Up Against Poverty

And for those interested, my book is coming to an end {yes it has been a long time coming} and as stated since that onset of writing it - that it will be entitled ‘West Belfast the Journey’, {which you can also see the opening paragraphs of it in last January’s edition of my online Dairy}

Indeed it will be completed in the short time ahead as I am presently putting the final touches to it, and therefore a long time realisation met. Even reading through it now and also looking through the 10 or so local documentaries I have acquired in recent times, and the interviews taken in West Belfast at the time {early 70’s through to 80’s} it shows that we are a world away from those times – even now.

Indeed on reading through my draft and watching those local videos of such times it seems almost like a different world.. {I must say though that watching my and many relatives homes and streets, and watching and hearing school friends and family in youth and childhood, back in the 70’s {Ballymurphy, the Falls, St Finians St Vincents Schools etc} is at times a surreal experience.

Coupled with this is also the attitudes and experiences also from the ‘Other Side. Indeed it was amazing to see kids when asked if they feared Catholics {if a Protestant} and if a Protestant if they feared Catholics, and many said yes.

But when asked if the had ever met ‘one’ or to explain who they where the answers were really interesting to say the least – although for many not surprising

It is fantastic that such local documentaries where made at the time as it captures our very real lives at the times. They capture the very real poverty of the street {and streets that I was reared}, they capture the brutally dished out to innocents on our streets, they capture the mental scarring of the kids witnessed through their interviews {taken in my Falls Road school and on the streets in the early seventies} – it captures also the ‘Eyes of utter defiance from childhood friends as children at the time. And much more, indeed at times it was if it was my own words speaking and seeing as a child.

Such though could not give a clearer a picture of what it was really like, for us, as kids, in the ‘Ghettos’ in those days,, and one hopes we never have to return to those days of 'such stance due to those ‘rights once denied.

I believe such evidence of that history is essential- but for me as stated, next week brings the definitive end to an era of ones life, in all regards.

Well that’s my plug for me book –

PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNMENT WATER CHARGES MEETING

10am Wednesday 11th Oct
Entrance to Kings Hall

To avoid opposition from the public, the Government has organised so-called ‘information’ meetings about the introduction of water charges, but have refused to publicly advertise them. In reality these are secret meetings.

The We Won’t Pay Campaign discovered the details of these meetings in the past few days and have called a protest outside the meeting in Belfast at King’s Hall.

These meetings are not open to the public, you have to register in order to attend! The Government doesn’t want the general public to show up and tell them what we think of their rip-off water charges. Proof of this is that they have called this meeting at 10am during the working week! How are most working people supposed to attend at this time?

The We Won’t Pay Campaign is calling on people to attend the protest against this meeting and the undemocratic and unjust water charges.

We are to leaflet Belfast city centre on Saturday the 7th October, in the run up to the Shannon demonstration, meeting at 1.00pm Saturday outside Primark on Castle Street.

Hope to see activist there

We're also trying to ascertain numbers planning to head to Shannon
from Belfast for the 28th October. Depending on numbers we could
travel by cars, or hire a bus and plan to request a £20 'solidarity
charge' from those who can afford it.

For those wishing to go to Shannon with us please contact our new Belfast AWI e- mail -

awibelfast@googlemail.com

Belfast Anti War Ireland will meet fortnightly, and our meetings are open, democratic and accountable, with all involved in the decision making process

Also at the last meeting it was decided to hold a higher profile public meeting, based around the Shannon demonstration, hopefully with the ex-US Vets. Queen's University was suggested as a good venue and Aine Fox is looking into this.

Attached is a PDF of the leaflet for Saturday's leafleting if anyone needs to print out more copies.

On a personal note

‘BAWI {part of a wider coalition} has been set up and is to work on that basis agreed and I firmly believe that there cannot be any real change to that, fundamental or otherwise. Set up by consensus more so than compromise, such a previous changed dictated situation had indeed then eventually lead to collapse with many many genuine and key persons ‘Driven away or joining other organisations because of that.

I urge all progressive activists across the Northern Networks and beyond opposed to such wars to join in that stance. At the end of the day it is the Internationalism also that is needed in such struggles’.

SO leaflet with us, get on the transport to Shannon, and get involved in our local Belfast branch or other branches as AWI is organised around different parts of the country

I will forward on other details about upcoming events of BAWI and AWI as a whole.

As always and in Solidarity Davy Carlin

Dear Friends,

The recent water Charges meeting organised by the ‘We won’t Pay Campaign kicked of it good style.

The meeting, well chaired by Jason Brannigan, opened up with a full account of where we where at by ‘Acting Secretary, and after meeting, Secretary, Gary Mulcahy

Over twenty differing proposals where put forward and after debate and discussion as well as a few changes all proposals where agreed by consensus. It was from here and the 30 plus activists in attendance that an 'Interim Committee for the Campaign was established with it being recallable and accountable to the delegate’s committee - {upcoming}.

The meeting agreed that the Campaign would be an accountable, democratic and grassroots campaign. We discussed upcoming activism and action, the setting up new groups rooted in the community and visibility of such, through to the issues of providing legal support, the raising of finance and the Unions etc.

Indeed it was a very ‘professional and well thought out discussion that was taking everything into account. We agreed to practically reach out to other campaigns, and that has already been ongoing, as we seek to have a united campaign of mass non payment.

As importantly those who sat around the table had a belief that we can win this and so all possible organisational initiatives are to be put into place now, both within the campaign and the outreach for the campaign.

The only way we are to defeat this unjust tax as with the Poll Tax and as was with the water Charges in the South is through mass support - non payment.

Indeed to do so one needs to cut across the Sectarian divide and not base it on one community or another {as that will spell defeat}. And on looking around the table not only did I see those from ‘both communities but more important many who have a history of ‘crossing communities.

To win we need to be united, and I would like to urge all activists to get involved in this as this will be the major battle in the North in the year ahead. Contact our Campaign through the web address above, download posters and put them up on your window and around your area. Set up a local group {it only takes a few people} and let us know how we can help.

Let’s stand together on this and if we do, I believe, and our Campaign believes, that we can win.

Get involved, and take a Just stand.

Davy Carlin - In the Ending

Update and Personal

Well folks our Anti Poverty event on Oct 15th is looking sound, I will forward on poster link and further info once the final details are tied down.

On NGO’S, well I know what many of us think of NGO organisations on Indymedia, but it mist be said that I had found in the Northern MPH many sound and dedicated individuals, who although would have a different understanding of how to change society, nevertheless are some sound grassroots activists in their own rights.

For me the next few weeks are important which will end in the Oct 15th event. Indeed numbers, may they be on a door, of groups of individuals, of people ages etc, have always since early youth been important to me {more especially three particular ones that have always stood out in my life}

And just before that event, comes my birthday {Oct 4 - Jesus 36 years young I will be} and for me on many issues I am to draw a line under the sand in many regards. Indeed I am in my final ‘binge out on my cravings such as smoking etc, and with that a new and more healthier , chilled, responsible, focused phase of my life then kicks of in real terms, this on Friday 13th of Oct.

Indeed as my partner and I attend the Waterfront Hall on that night {Friday the 13th Oct} to listen to Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, much will for me have changed.

{Rachmaninov’s Second {for those interested} provides beautiful melodies emotional appeal and passion, an ‘Uplifting ‘Journey, from sadness to jubilation. Indeed it reflects a nation’s fight for Independence, with a short pre concert talk by Nicholas Braithwaite, and played out by the Ulster Orchestra - on their 40 YEARS birthday!}

The kid from the war and the ‘ghettos’, to this, indeed much change I have seen.

Yet as my partner and I leave that night on Friday the 13th {superstition abounds} and as we travel home back up to the ‘Turf, I will look upon black Mountain on passing and remember as I had knelt 25 years ago and echoed my heart out around the city of Belfast at the height of war.

And as stated, ‘indeed but a child I carried no gun but I to was fighting a war’, and so in that regard and on those issues in mind at those awful of times, I will look upon our mountain {chilled and focused} - as I will know, that now all those years later, that my mind is at rest and with that, my war, that war, for me, is over.

Yes there are issues of the past and the wrongs to be addressed and must be worked to conclusion. But from that date all other in that past will be there in the past, as will be the good and the bad, and rights and the wrongs I have had during life.

Indeed there is much during the war that one may have witnessed that one can never utter, as there are pivotal events and persons of the last 36 years {as many would know} that have been essential to the War and the process of peace, in relation to my own huge ‘Extended family within that time.

Yet I as come to the final chapter - of my book, and to the last page of the 35 years on my life on this earth, I reflect.

Indeed, as stated I will come back to wrap up all such recent issues of activism and life in my Nov diary. This thread though continues for oneself, as we have still other events and workings together to discuss in the Coalition

For me though and as I give this personal take also within this piece I look forward to a future that I have described elsewhere with one self chilled and content in mind and able to settle into a decent life and still more dreams I wish to see through.

Yet, as I travel home in a Black Hack and look upon our Mountain {and whatever happens in the short time ahead} -I will have taken my final small’ baby steps that took many many years to complete and I will finally step over the line of that barrier of the past, - and so within the present I will look forward to a better, happier and chilled future.

In activism I will play a less visual role but nevertheless a supportive role,as in such Movements as before {as I will have limited time with returning back to full time work and also study} and I of course will still write etc.

My activism will be within the Libertarian Movement and will continue to work to see fundamental change for all our citizens – and I do so, still, from that position of getting up from upon my knees all the years ago, to now, still and as always unbowed and unbroken, but even more focused and determined - D.

We Won't Pay Campaign Members Meeting

When? 11am - 2pm Saturday 30th September

Where? Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre, Donegall St, Belfast

There are now almost six months left before the introduction of water charges.
Opposition to this double-tax is widespread. The steep increases in rates has
also hardened this opposition. Support for a campaign of mass non-payment
campaign is growing as was seen by the decision of several trade unions,
including the Northern Ireland Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions,
to back non-payment.

The We Won't Pay Campaign now needs to step up it's work in
local communities across Northern Ireland in preparation for next April. There
will be proposals on how to build the campaign and also the election of a
committee to bring the campaign forward until a full conference of the campaign
is called.

If you know anyone who wants to campiagn against water charges, bring them
along.

Hi Folks,

{For those interested}

I know many on this list have been involved in Anti Racism, Anti War and Anti Poverty actions, so a few updates for those who follow such

Well the launch of Anti War Ireland - AWI - {Belfast Branch} kicked of in good style recently. The AWI is set up on a broad, open and Democratic basis where 'ALL' have a say and no one party dictates where, what, and who does whatever

AWI - Link - http://www.antiwarireland.org/

A broad meeting of 35 activists from different groups {and none} attended the meeting {many young activists in attendance}. Chaired by myself {Organise! and AWI organising group} it opened up with Ciaron speaking, then followed Deirdre, both gave excellent accounts of both the recent Pitstop Ploughshares struggle as well as given an International analysis.

Given this was the first meeting and launch of the Belfast AWI it was an excellent start and would be equivalent of over 100 activists turning up to a new launch in Dublin. I personally had found the speakers very articulate and very knowledgeable and had seen good intervention from the floor.

For the AWI our priority and call is to mobilise HERE in Ireland against the War and we urge people to attend the National Demo here on Sept 23rd

Below gives the various moments of the local Movements on Belfast streets. I know many on such lists have been involved in such, but there are many other new activists coming through and it is important that such activism in which Catholic, Protestant and dissenter have stood shoulder to shoulder on Belfast's streets is recalled.

For those interested the 3rd [and Final Part} of my articles on the History of the Belfast Anti War Movement will be on the Blanket website soon {and will detail in full as to the reasons of my leaving the Belfast Anti war Movement - as many are asking} – Although it incorporates many of the reverse points as to why I joined AWI and how it seeks to organise

The History of the Belfast Anti War Movement

Part I http://www.phoblacht.net/buildingbelfast.html

Pat 2 http://www.phoblacht.net/movingto.html

Part 3 {Final one to follow} will deal with leaving BAWM - - -the recent Belfast mobilisations and also on the issue of those 'Far away Socialists who concentrate almost solely on 'Far away Imperialism - and much more

Links to the very beginnings of the BAWM {before a movement} -

Part 1 http://www.phoblacht.net/bscw.html

Part 2 - {The Very Beginning} http://www.phoblacht.net/notinour.html

Part three of the ARN Movement will be written and I will attach the TV Documentary of the first ever such Anti Racism march and rally ever seen in the North of Ireland {The no excuses march and rally} With the build up, the march, speeches and interviews of all those involved on that marvellous day.

Total agreement - as per Marks point below, all support visible and otherwise needs to be given for all 9 who had protested.

That starts with activists getting down to the solidarity picket that has been called
tomorrow at 9.30am in front of the Old Court (High Court) Belfast.

Solidarity is not only essential but is a must for all progressive activists to stand with these anti war activists tomorrow, that is Eamonn McCann and another of the Derry protestors

I would urge activists from all Anti War campaigns and non, to lend visible support and, if they can, to hold similar solidarity pickets around Ireland - {it only takes a few people to do - but sends out a powerful message of Solidarity}

See you there {at Belfast picket} tomorrow.

In Solidarity Davy Carlin -

From Mark Hewitt -{SWP}

The 9 anti-war protestors who disupted business at Raytheons Derry office
have been remanded in custody until September 7th. They have been charged
with 'aggravated burglary', 'criminal damage', and 'unlawful assembly'.
Some of these charges are 'scheduled offences' which allows the state to
prosecute in front of a Judge and no jury (the notorious Diplock court
system). After the aquittal of the Pitstop Ploughshares defendants in front
of a jury recently for action at Shannon airport the state here does not
want the same outcome.

Eamonn McCann and another of the Derry protestors will be applying for bail
tomorrow at the High Court at 9.30am. A solidarity picket has been called
tomorrow at 9.30am in front of the Old Court (High Court) Belfast. Please
spread the word and bring banners, placards etc.

The – ‘ STOP THE WAR COALITION, in the North, has organised and called a march and rally. { as below} Key organisations that can mobilise such as ICTU, through to those who have a recent history of being able to mobilise onto the streets, in their own right as an Organisation or movement, such as ARN - IPSC and DAWC etc have supported this call, this as well as others who have put their name to it, and I am sure others can do so even at this late time.

Indeed, as the key organisations, they of course should be the four invited speakers as advertised. {so no problems there I am sure} –

I know that many others are preparing to mobilise, and have and are circulating their membership for this {others are doing so now} - and it is doing the rounds around the networks and radio etc. I urge all to attend and to send our voices out loud against the ongoing slaughter in Lebanon.

NOTE - but let us not forget Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and the others who are being brutalised and slaughtered in the region while we do so.

Also if activists want to make their own posters and leaflets to advertise the rally then I would urge u to do so {as ur organisation will have more ‘pulling power’ with your membership}, as I know others who are supporting the rally are also doing so.

So please all Support the - STOP THE WAR COALITIONS {StWc} MARCH AND RALLY ON SAT – and also send and lend solidarity to the Derry Anti War Coalition

Keep up the build up and the momentum in the background and in the networks as I know many are doing through contact, - and also bring friends, family and colleagues with you

The Anti war Movement in the North has a history of embracing many tactics over the last few years.

Link – Part 2 - http://lark.phoblacht.net/movingto.html

Indeed as I had stated in Part two of the History of the local Anti War Movement –

‘In reality in Belfast thousands of trade Unionists, student, community, peace and anti-war activists and others have engaged in five days of non violent civil disobedience some small others large scale - more than that of many other such movements and organisations that actually called for it - as we gave the state no warning and the sheer numbers at times of the movement in spontaneous action was what some knew may well happen. {Lock downs, occupations, walkouts, roadblocks, sit downs, various direct actions and much more}

Of course one needs to be highly organised in such a period and to have accountable and democratic structures giving a strategic lead albeit with tactical changes as and when it necessitates. It was though the spontaneous action from the movement from below rather than a call from above on this occasion that gave both the element of surprise and provided heightened consciousness of the strength held in such a movement through that collective action from below' -.

- - - All such needed to be and was utilised over this time, this, in comparison to other Movements who called march after march , and although marching is essential, one just has to look at the Vietnam protests and many various actions involved while seeking to build mass mobilisations.

Indeed,

As I state in the forthcoming article in WCR

‘For the wider Anti War Movement, it needs to acknowledge that there are many tactics that needs to be employed to highlight, dismantle, and to attempt to bring an end to the wars, the war machine, and the continual slaughter. May it be in the mobilisation of as many people on the streets as possible through to various forms of direct action, all is an integral part of the Anti War movement.

‘Anti War activists in Ireland need to continue to attempt to end the Governments collaboration with those who are responsible for this slaughter and to direct our attentions at the facilities provided for such slaughter. We have a responsibility to not only speak out against this, but to actively organise, mobilise and direct our collective power and actions against such’.

{In the few months ahead I am to write Part 3 of the local Anti War Movement - ‘Re –vitalised through Momentum created.}

The Derry Anti War Coalition, from that march from Derry {which I also had the privilege to partake in} through to now the ongoing occupation had shown, as with Belfast, that while activists work to build for mass mobilisation, many many other tactics are and need to be used, as has been our recent Movement and Coalition histories in the North..
.
.

Solidarity to the Derry Anti War Coalition, and fair play to them for again putting themselves on the line to highlight the ongoing slaughter,

-it has only begun one thinks..

Belfast Telegraph article -

War protesters storm Raytheon
Up to 50 police involved in stand-off
By Brendan McDaid

09 August 2006

Anti-war protesters today stormed American arms manufacturer Raytheon's Londonderry base, with nine people barricading themselves into the building and wrecking equipment.

The protesters were soon locked in a tense stand-off with upwards of 50 police officers, after some of them inflicted considerable damage, especially to computers.

According to the protesters, the computer system was "completely disabled".

Amid chaotic scenes at the Buncrana Road site, thousands of documents and dozens of computers were burned and thrown from windows by members of a group that entered the building at 8am today.

Among those who entered the premises to protest against the world's largest missiles manufacturer was veteran civil rights campaigner Eamonn McCann.

An American flag was also set alight and a glass door smashed as debris rained down from a second floor window and littered the area outside.

A banner was unfurled from inside the building, reading "Raytheon has been decommissioned".

A dozen more people protesting over the deaths of Lebanese civilians remained outside, with placards bearing anti-war and anti-Raytheon slogans.

Speaking from inside the complex, as dozens of uniformed police gathered, Mr McCann said: "The people of Derry cannot go on feeling shock and horror as they watch TV screens and do nothing,

"I certainly would not welcome an arrest and prosecution, who would? But judgment has to be made, people felt they had no option but to take this form of direct action."

Fellow anti-war protester and member of Socialist Environmental Alliance Goretti Horgan, who was one of those protesting outside the building at the Ulster Science and Technology Park on Buncrana Road, said: "There is a bit of property damage but that is as nothing compared to the thousands of people dying.

"We had to do the damage in order to get a chance to put Raytheon in the dock. We want to try and stop or slow down Raytheon production even for a short while because any kind of delay to getting bombs to Israel to drop on innocent Lebanese and Palestinian people has to be welcomed."

Around 50 police were on the premises both inside and out as the protest developed.

There were minor scuffles as police tried to prevent people leaving the scene without being searched and a police cordon was erected around the building, with the protesters pushed back and informed that the area was a crime scene.

A spokeman for Raytheon said this morning that the company is not making any comment "on this particular occasion".

The protest was the latest in a line of actions taken against the arms giant by anti-war protesters in Derry.

In March 2003, 12 people invaded the premises and conducted a short sit-in.

Raytheon is the world's fourth largest arms manufacturer and the largest missile manufacturer. It developed Tomahawk Cruise, Hellfire and Patriot missiles and related software currently being used in the war on Iraq.

The company was brought to Derry as part of Northern Ireland's "peace dividend" following the ceasefires after a lobby by politicians.

However Raytheon's presence in the city has led to numerous protests and it warned jobs would be lost if the protests - which included a "grave digging" ceremony in November 2004 - continued.

Dear friends,

In Belfast with the initial IPSC demo, and the build up to today’s actions, 'Momentum to Mobilise has now been created

The recent newspaper advertisements for today’s actions and indeed today’s whole front Page of Daily Ireland, Ireland to Mobilise, under the title

‘Anti War Protests Planned across Ireland’ has also help see that momentum now created

And so such momentum, as ‘thought, has now ‘moved and reborn the Stop the War Coalition into action, and anyone not familiar with it can read the links attached for its history

The StWc name like those who are key supporters of it, the IPSC, ARN, ICTU, Derry Anti War Coalition and many more are all respected organisations and have a history of mobilising and support for calls – as has the StWc.

And so as circulated please support below on {SAT}, the Momentum has been created {will go into it later} so we need to now focus it, and with that - lets get our feet onto the streets today and on Sat, and support any other actions

Today’s Belfast Rally

Several hundred attended the Trocaire Rally in Belfast today with representation across the Movement in attendance and lending support.

Several of the key NGO organisations and their representatives from the MPH - CGAP, Northern Coalition where there. Politicians including Gerry Adams {SF}, Carmel Hanna {SDLP} David Ervine {PUP}, the Mayor of Belfast etc, had stood shoulder to shoulder with key trade unionists as well as banners and placards ranging from NIPSA to UNISON, through to Reps of the Belfast Trade Union Council.

Party banners from the SDLP through to the Workers party joined activists and supporters of Organise! through to the SP and SWP. Key activists from the IPSC, ARN, the Chinese Welfare Society and Belfast Islamic Centre where joined with banners from Amnesty International through to Trocaire, local key cross community workers and activists joined reps from student bodies and student political groups. The Belfast Anti War Movement and various other solidarity campaigns where joined by church groups and local workers who had come out on their lunch break- this amongst many other various others, individually, and from various other organisations - whom had attended.

So friends now with such ‘Collective Representation of the Movement’ having now been mobilised against War for the first time in years, lets now get into our Networks, our Colleges our Workplace our unions and get our college friends, family and activists onto the streets on Sat.

Thanks to Trocaire for this essential call and organisation, and to the grassroots activists who had also worked in the background to mobilise such Collective support.

The Momentum has now been Created let Belfast voices again go out loud and clear, and again put our feet on to the streets on Sat

See you all there –

Demo Tues 8TH August 6pm Israeli & US Embassies

EMERGENCY ALERT

LEBANON, PALESTINE, IRAQ, IRAN

STOP US-ISRELI WAR CRIMES

DEMONSTRATION 6PM TUESDAY 8TH AUGUST

Assemble 6pm Israeli Embassy Ballsbridge, followed by march to US Embassy
Organised by the Irish Anti War Movement

The Anti War Movement needs to keep on the streets during this emergency.
Despite the barbaric ferocity of the attacks on Lebanon, its people and its infrastructure, Israel is no nearer achieving its objectives.

Its huge bombing of Lebanon has not destroyed hizbollah and in desperation it
is widening the conflict.

In fact it risks getting bogged down in a protracted occupation of Lebanon without
any prospect of crushing

Hizbollah. If it wasn't for the backing of the US-sending over 100 uranium
tipped missiles last week-and the mealy mouthed response from EU governments, Israel would be condemned on the world stage.

The Irish Anti War Movement has helped shape opposition in this country, with a
successful speaking tour of Joshua Casteel that revitalised the movement in many parts of the country, followed by a two to three thousand demonstration last Saturday.

The groundswell of anger these events illustrate has already brought us one
significant gain-the Irish government has been forced to concede that US munitions may no longer be transported through Irish airports.

Anti War activists and supporters need to take heart from this and organise a
very serious demonstration on Tuesday 8th August starting at the Israeli Embassy followed by a march to the US Embassy.

Thousands of leaflets and posters have been produced and we need to organise
stalls, leafleting of stations and shopping centres and postering runs in the next few days to build for this.

If you can help ring Sara on 087 2886646

Material is available in the Anti War Office at 55 Middle Abbey St for
collection.

Ten - twelve of the organisations were there, this ranging from Street Seen to leading NGO's, from ICTU {NI} through to other 'grassroots campaigners'

Agreed by consensus were a number of points.

Firstly that the coalition shall be together not only in 2006 but also throughout 2007

Secondly that we shall host a combined event on October the 14th, although various organisations within the coalition will advertise their ‘own specific events within the mobilisation month.

Thirdly that we are to contact various other organisations for involvement in the Coalition -. this to range from NGO through to grassroots organisations –such as independent trade unions, anti racism, women’s, and student organisations and ‘grassroots campaign groups -amongst others.

- Local issues of concern from Water charges and Pensions through to migrant poverty and wider ‘local poverty in general where discussed - and will be further discussed in the course of agreeing an event and further workings together.

Make Poverty History 9th evening {absolutely miserable in terms of weather, rain, cold you name it}. Nevertheless we had seen several hundred people over the period of time lending support to the Central vigil - {Belfast City Hall} stopping to join in and to fill in the protest cards to be sent of, as well as seeing many dozens of activists elsewhere around Belfast City Centre raising awareness through different methods.

Music was provided also, and although drenched and cold it finished of an awesome and Momentous year for Make Poverty History in the North and Internationally.

AGAINST POVERTY PAY AND EXPLOITATION OF MIGRANT WORKERS

Over 100 people rallied outside the UTV studios today at lunchtime in Solidarity action with workers in Irish ferries. Several Trade Unions where prominent {with banners - placards etc} including SIPTU, NIPSA, UNISON and ATGWU as was the Belfast Trades Councils members and Banner.

Political parties banners had seen one from the Socialist Party and had seen also a sizable contingent from Sinn Fein. Other banners included Organise! and others again were written in Irish with the quotes of James Connolly.

Various others where in attendance and I had seen many who had and do give active support to the ARN there - so thanks for the support. This more especially with it being called and 'Networked' at very very short notice, as so to lend that practical, visual and collective solidarity.

Don’t forget the MPH vigil at front of Belfast City Hall starts at 5pm, and also the other events around the North as forwarded. In Solidarity Davy Carlin

The Belfast and District Trades Union Council (B&DTUC) with the ICTU have arranged a solidarity demo in Belfast for 1.00pm on Friday 9th December outside the UTV offices, Havelock House, Ormeau Road, Belfast.

This venue has been chosen because the Chairman of UTV is John B McGuckian who is also a non-executive director of Irish Ferries.

The issues at the core of this dispute are very serious and relevant to us in Belfast. Overpaid Irish ferries directors are attempting to exploit and abuse vulnerable migrant workers by using them to break the union organisation and drive down rates of pay and conditions.

Please attend and circulate as widely as possible.

POVERTY AND EXPOLTATION

Dear friends,

Well this week has and will see differing coordinated actions against poverty, exploitation, and all its various manifestations. This has and will be seen all around Ireland

Indeed I do not know the last time such issues have happened in tandem like this.

Over the last week or so I had attended a major conference on the issue of social and economic regeneration and had discussed with key activists the issue of socio and economic disadvantage and many other related issues.

This had seen key NGO, grassroots and politics representatives from across the 'communities' in both attendance' and round table discussion. Then a few days later I had attended a rally on a differing matter but had heard the issue of poverty raised again from the platform.

Yet over the last year we have seen mobilisations against Poverty, this both local and international, with on the one hand thousands mobilising for the Make Poverty history rallies and events while on the other hand seeing direct action and hundreds more taking to the streets on issues of local poverty and homelessness etc.

With that, on Friday Dec 9th we will see cities and towns North and South mobilising in various events on differing issues of poverty, exploitation and low pay.

December 9th 2005 – Mobilisations -

1} In the North Make Poverty history is coordinating differing events, this after having already seen and delivered a momentous year of actions and mobilisations as previously forwarded.

Complete updates – MPH, Street Seen, Shell to Sea, the Somasundram family, Misc.

Dear Friends,

1} The International Make Poverty History Movement will be on the Streets of Belfast and elsewhere around the North on Dec 9th. Events planned to date outside Belfast are for Derry, Coleraine, Armagh, Dungannon, Bangor and possibly Larne.

Over recent years we have seen Belfast partaking in International coordinated and organised actions. This from the hundreds of youth who took to the streets of Belfast in Non Violent Direct actions and marches as part of the Anti Globalisation Movement {2000 -} through to the Belfast Anti War Movement and Stop the War Coalition {2002 -} who mobilised thousands throughout Belfast in many actions against the Iraq war.

{We have of course also seen great responses within those years on local specific issues ranging from Anti Sectarianism through to Anti Racism}

Similar we had seen thousands under the MPH banner {2005 - } take to the streets of Belfast as part of a momentous Movement, that had both seen the largest political demonstration in Scotland’s history and as per the United Nations web, the largest such demonstration in the North in living memory’. Therefore to end of this momentous year and that stance against global poverty I would urge you to both attend and pass on word of the vigils etc.

In Belfast it starts at 5pm {as per previous attached flyers I had sent}, and will include a brass band, a ‘young modern band’ a group from the minority ethic communities and a choir.

The event will include a vigil where people will be encouraged to take a minute’s break from shopping for Christmas to light a candle in support of the world’s poorest people. A specially commissioned replica of an African tree will be on display for people to symbolically hang their white bands to finish this year of MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY activities.

MPH NI includes Trocaire, Christian Aid, Oxfam, ARN, Street Seen, ICTU, NIPSA and many others

Hope to see you there

Link - http://www.makepovertyhistory-ni.org/

2} Street Seen – We had also seen this year the rise of Street Seen.

The issue of homelessness, more especially at this time of year is essential to rise. This is given added impetus when citizens are dieing on the streets. Therefore the various non violent direct actions that have been used have helped put this issue onto the front pages and into the wider public domain. The recent action has seen the homeless issue on the front pages, such as in today’s Irish Times through to reports carried in many of the Northern media as well as Southern TV and radio. As importantly a number of key TV shows will see the ‘homeless community’ being able to put their voices again to a wider audience. This active campaign will continue to attempt to ‘End the Deaths on our Streets.

4} SOMASUNDRAM FAMILY FACE DEPORTATION - THEY NEED YOUR
SUPPORT

The Somasundram family (Two adults and four
children, including their daughter Sujatha who is now
over 18) have lived in the north since 2001. They left
Sri Lanka following the murder of their eldest son by
government forces. Soma (the father) was arrested
and tortured for 5 days when he arrived to take his
son's body. The family were tortured and threatened
with death. The family believed that they were under
threat both from the Sri Lankan military and the Tamil
Tigers. They eventually managed to escape Sri Lanka,
arrived in the north after a torturous journey and
applied for asylum. The British Home Office turned
down their asylum claim saying that because there were
peace talks and ceasefires in Sri Lanka the treat to
the family was deemed to have diminished. They also
stated that they believed such a young hard working
family could make a contribution to the rebuilding of
Sri Lanka.

All of the family's appeals against the decision have
failed. They are now in a situation where they have
appealed for exceptional leave to remain on
compassionate and humanitarian grounds. The family
and their supporters fear, with justification, that
they could be lifted from their home, placed in prison
and deported any day now. They are extremely
vulnerable and fearful as to their future. The
campaign is trying to establish whether, following the
Tsunami the British government is deporting people back
to Sri Lanka.

In recent weeks there has been a large number of
people picked up by immigration and jailed pending
their deportation. An Eritrean woman was taken from
her home, separated from her children and taken in a
prison van to Hydebank. While she was in the prison
van she tried to commit suicide such was her level of
distress. She received no medical help and was brought
to Dungavel Detention Centre near Glasgow. However
following legal intervention and public pressure she
was returned to the north and re-united with her
children.

The family are well settled into the north and are
very involved in community and school life here. The
younger children are doing exceptionally well in
school - Raj and Kousalyaa are sitting A levels and
Vishnu is in Year 10. The children have the full
support of the current and former headmaster to stay
in the north. Mr. Somasundram has worked for the St.
Vincent De Paul, the Red Cross and the local Indian
Community Centre.

The only thing that will prevent the Somansundrams
being deported is public and political pressure.

Belfast Shell to Sea -

Upcoming events - Please support the Belfast Shell to Sea Activities

Saturday 26th November, 1pm

We will be meeting at the Castle Junction (Black Taxi depot) at the top of Castle Street at 1pm to leaflet shoppers and to raise awareness about the campaign and the case of the Rossport 5.

Saturday 3rd December, 11.30pm

White Line picket at the junction of the bottom of the Whiterock Road and the Falls Road. We'll try to raise money to support the campaign and again raise awareness of the case.

There may also be an 'International Climate Change march and rally' on in the city centre in the afternoon, {as was raised at the last Belfast Shell to Sea meeting, I believe by an SWP member} but I haven't heard anything definite about that yet, nor has Belfast Shell to Sea.

Given that there is less than two weeks to go, for such an International event, and having been no visual publicity for it, and no definite word of it amongst key activist circles, I am unsure if it is still on or not.

So it would be best to contact the SWP in Belfast in that regard if interested. If on, it may be worth taking part in, as it is an important issue.

Tuesday 6th December, 7pm

Micheál Ó Seighin will be launching an art exhbition in the Cultúrlann on the Falls Road, featuring the work of Tadhg McGrath - a member of the Shell to Sea campaign in Dublin. This will be an informal gathering but it will be an opportunity for people to meet Micheál and his wife Caitlín and to find out more about what's been going on. This event is open to all.

Thinking of participating in the Mass Lobby of Parliament for Trade Justice on 2nd November? Don't know where to start?

Dear MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Member,

The upcoming Mass Lobby of Parliament for Trade Justice on 2nd November is the most important moment for our campaign in the next few weeks. Thousands of campaigners will be coming to Westminster to lobby their MPs ahead of the WTO meetings in December.

We also want to see the directors and staff of all 530+ MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY member organisations there in person on 2nd November to lobby their own MPs for change. But perhaps you're not sure what the mass lobby involves, or how to get your staff and supporters down to Westminster on the day?

We are holding an Open Forum in a week's time to prepare member organisations for the 2nd November. There will be a short talk on the background politics of the Mass Lobby - what what policy changes we want to see and why we are having a mass lobby - and a short talk on the logistics of the day and how you can get involved. There will be Mass Lobby Packs and other materials to take away, and a chance to discuss the event informally with some of the organisers. Drinks and food will be provided.

Open Forum on the Mass Lobby for Trade Justice
When? Wednesday 19th October, 4pm-6pm
Where? At BOND's offices in London (http://www.bond.org.uk/aboutus/map.htm)

4pm Start
4.15pm Politics of Trade Justice / Why have a Mass Lobby?
4.30pm Logistics of the Mass Lobby / How you can get involved.
4.45pm Questions and interactive discussion
5.10pm Looking ahead to White Band Day III
5.15pm Drinks and food
6pm Close

Please do come along. Let Tom Allen (tallen@bond.org.uk) know you will be attending, by Friday 12th October if possible.

With best wishes,

Call from London MPH -

Dear MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Member,

On 2 November, thousands of MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaigners will be coming to Westminster to lobby their MPs ahead of the World Trade Organisation Ministerial meeting in December. It is undoubtedly the most important moment for our campaign in the next few weeks and I would like to personally encourage you and others from your organisation to be there on the day.

The lobby will put pressure on the UK Government to change its negotiating position ahead of the WTO Ministerial meeting in Hong Kong. It will call on the UK Government to stop pushing developing countries to open their economies and to respect poor countries' right to decide on trade policies to help end poverty and protect their environment. This is one of the key demands of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY now has over 530 member organisations, from a huge spread of UK civil society, and it will add to the political weight of the occasion if we can say all the Directors of our member organisations are there in person to lobby their own MPs alongside other people from their constituency.

Please promote the event widely and mobilise your supporters to take part. The Trade Justice Movement have produced promotional material (A5 flyers, A4/A3 posters and a lobby pack) which can be ordered by e-mailing Vicky@tjm.org.uk .

The focus of the day will be a giant queue outside Parliament organised by nation, region and constituency. The queue will start forming at 12pm and at 1pm. Campaigners will hold a minute's silence while creating a giant white loop around Westminster. MPs will be lobbied by campaigners throughout the afternoon.

If you are able to attend please register at www.makepovertyhistory.org , and contact your MP in advance to request a meeting. A Mass Lobby pack has been produced by the Trade Justice Movement with full details of the day and can be downloaded from www.tjm.org.uk .

Thank you for all your support so far. We look forward to seeing you at the lobby.

Dear Friends,

The Make Poverty History Movement {MPH} continues. Details will follow of other actions and updates from around the Movement.

In relation to the North's MPH - we will be holding a vigil in Belfast on Dec 9th. There will probably be bands, music, actions for people to support etc, as so to give hundreds of campaigners, activists and members of the public another opportunity to come together and to get involved on the day.

This time though we may also be looking into holding other vigils at the same time around other towns and cities of the North as so others can participate.

Again this is an opportunity to practically, and visibly take a stand of solidarity on the issue of Poverty.

I will keep persons updated.

* Saturday September 3 was the day it all begun as thousands danced and waved the white bands during concerts on the two continents of Africa and Asia.

The concert in Accra had among its keynote speakers, IFG-GCAP Chair Kumi Naidoo and Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle, the Bishop of Accra. Salif Keita, Seun Kuti, Mahotella Queens, highlife king K. Mann and Mac Tontoh were just some of the performers that the wowed the crowd at this event dubbed, Africa Standing Tall against Poverty II (the preceding concert having been in Johannesburg, South Africa on July 1). So phenomenal and motivating was the event that artistes who were not billed to perform took to the stage to show their support and the concert, which was supposed to be performed in eight hours, went on for fifteen hours.

Event: POVERTY CAMPAIGNERS ASK BELFAST CITY COUNCIL TO ‘WAKE UP TO WORLD POVERTY’

Date: Friday 09 September 2005

Time: 12.30pm

Venue: Main Entrance, Belfast City Hall

The MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign in N. Ireland will ask Belfast City Council to pass a formal resolution in support of the campaign at an event on Friday to mark ‘White Band Day 2’.

Members of the coalition, which is made up of a wide range of aid agencies, faith groups, community groups and trade unions, together with their supporters and Belfast City councillors will gather at City Hall to support the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) ahead of the UN World Summit in New York next week.

The news that the summit on 14-16 September is set to downplay the global fight against poverty, has been greeted with dismay and deep concern by anti-poverty campaigners worldwide. Heads of government attending from 191 countries are due to review progress made on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set in 2000 to halve poverty by 2015. However, the US administration, in particular, is trying to eradicate all mention of the goals, something which the Global Call to Action argues cannot be allowed to happen.

Lawrence McBride of Trócaire, a spokesperson for the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY NI coalition said, “During 2005 we have seen an unprecedented momentum build across the world, uniting citizens in rich and poor countries in the desire for their leaders to commit to eradicating poverty in this generation. A failure to take decisive action on the Millennium Development Goals will be an indefensible betrayal of almost half the people of our planet.”

You are invited to send a reporter and photographer to this event.

Make Poverty History - North.

The Make Poverty History Northern Irish coalition would like to invite you to the official White Band Day 2 photo call on Friday, 9th September at 12:30pm, where we will be creating a human white band around Belfast City Hall.

As you are probably aware 'MAKE POVERTY HISTORY' is calling for the mobilisation of resources and political will in 2005- a year when the British Government plays a central role hosting both G8 Summit and EU Presidency- to attain the only internationally agreed targets on development- the Millennium Development Goals.

MPH has been greeted with much success in Northern Ireland, and we hope that White Band Day 2 will be another opportunity to consolidate the good will that exists among the general public as well as among our local representatives.

There will also be a Fair trade market day event at St George's Market in Belfast (near the Waterfront Hall) on Saturday 10th from 10am to 4pm- White Band Day itself- where you will be able to get information on Fair trade and buy fairtrade produce.

We are aware of the continued support and commitment of many of our local representatives for this campaign, and we hope that you will join with our efforts in Northern Ireland as we stand together as part of a global movement demanding that poverty be assigned to the history books forever.

MPH NI Coalition -

From the largest demonstration against Global poverty ever seen in the North of Ireland,

to the mobilsing from the North of Ireland the largest numbers ever to such an event, -

- To the MPH Central Statement on the largest Political demonstration in the history of Scotland.

MPH Central - Statement.'

Dear Members,

On behalf of the Coordination Team, a message of huge appreciation for all the creativity and energy and effort that so many members put into making Saturday a defining moment for Make Poverty History.

What an amazing day! Over 225,000 people there (the papers now seem to be settling on 'around a quarter of a million'), The biggest mobilisation in Scotland since the Reformation. The human white band around Edinburgh looked spectacular from the air; so did the giant letters with everyone's white-band messages on them. A really enjoyable day that carried genuine policy punch... And so much of what made it special was because so many MPH members and their supporters were so creative in the ways they got their messages across. Many, many thanks for making it happen in the way that it did.

There's now no doubting the passion with which millions of people are demanding justice on trade, debt and aid. We've had moments in recent months when some in the media have questioned a movement that they have interpreted as being celebrity-heavy and policy-lite; that's not possible after Saturday: they've seen that we know, and are passionate about, the real issues that matter to real people living in poverty; and they've seen how many people are saying it.

We need to go on working hard to make sure that the G8 leaders have no doubt about that either - before they arrive, as they arrive, and while they're meeting. Please keep up any pressure you can in the media: respond to coverage with letters to the press, human-interest stories about your own supporters, policy messages you still want to get through: the more visibility we can get for any of this will help to keep up the pressure this week. If you have links to organisations in other G8 countries, support them too in keeping their own leaders' minds on the subject.

Here in Edinburgh, we're now preparing for what to say in response to the G8's announcements on Friday. As you will have seen in the press, things are not looking great for a positive outcome. The fact that they're still working on it is itself a sign of the pressure they feel they're under, and that's why it's so important to keep leaning on them. If that delivers last-minute agreements on our agenda, we'll be ready to give praise where it's due. But we need to be ready for an outcome that doesn't go as far as we'd hoped as well.

Late-ish on Friday afternoon, as soon as we know what the G8 Final Communique (expected at about 4pm) says, we'll be getting a core MPH message out to the media on our reaction to it. We'll also be putting a message to supporters directly on the website, that both congratulates them for what they've done already and (depending on G8 outcomes) motivates them for the next phase of the campaign.

We will send these, at the same time, to you - so that you can use them as a basis for your own media work and communications with your supporters. Please do use these as speedily as you're able. The media statement will be a framing baseline, with which we'd like you to be consistent but from which we would encourage you to develop your own more detailed work - depending on your own specialist issues.

So, once again, our appreciation for all that you put into such a wonderful day on Saturday; and please do keep up the pressure.

Ends -

Dear friends below I give some final press quotes in relation to the MPH coalition in the North over the last while. We had started of with no press coverage and through creating public momentum we had then created extensive media momentum. Indeed to an extent that many of the main TV, radio stations and newspapers had contacted us to send crews over with us, which we divided up on various buses as so they could a get a real flavour of the Movement in its entirety.

We had also seen then the issue made front page news over that time and indeed seeing Daily Ireland carrying the MPH logo front page for two days {fair play to them}.

Friends the MPH coalition in the North is a bottom up organisation with open, collective and consensual decision making - {as I heard others are top very down} and holds many excellent activists. I, as stated before will detail the development of the MPH movement which will be incorporated into the Street Seen article I am working on {Street Seen - from the beginning}.

I write such from the Knowledge and friendships I had found from working within the MPH Northern coalition, and from the inspiration I had found with working with some such dedicated activists from many organisations - I do it also within that personal setting and the view point of being Chair of the MPH Event committee {The event being the Rally}

The MPH coalition in the North had not only mobilised the largest demo against Global poverty ever seen in the North, as stated, and had mobilised the largest contingent of hundreds ever to travel to such a demo -.

- but it showed again as with the Anti War and Anti Racism mobilisations in the North that unity {presently} on specifics is possible. So to finish of, here are some quotes re - the MPH coalition actions to date in the North all taken from the press.

'The MPH rally in Northern Ireland was the largest demonstration against Global poverty ever seen here.'

'Colourful Northern Ireland Poverty Rally is Biggest in Recent Memory'

'The MPH rally was the largest Anti Poverty rally seen in Northern Ireland, with thousands in attendance'

Hundreds travel with MPH NI to Scotland in the largest mobilisation from the North to this kind of demonstration’

MPH spokesperson says 'that up to 1000 will travel from the North to the G8.

'A Movement to raise awareness, to eradicate poverty, has taken to the Streets of Northern Ireland'

'An unprecedented coalition in Northern Ireland of all the Aid and Development agencies in co-operation with the entire community and voluntary sector and Trade Union movement has been formed in Northern Ireland'

'Will you join us in the Revolution to bring down Poverty’? {Those Street Seeners} This was the title used by the Irish News to a letter send out by Jon Glackin on behalf of the MPH NI Coalition{Jon like myself is also a Street Seen Activist}.

In conclusion

MPH NI still has a lot of work to do and we in Street Seen work to the fore in many such campaigns around the island. Street Seen is an activist’s grassroots paper as is its methodology of seeking to work {and seeking to win others to work similar}.
Street Seen is the paper of the local Movement on the island, as virtually all such visible campaigns and Movements sees many activists involved in, or are supportive of Street Seen. May that be in local community, solidarity or trade union campaigns, or may it be in larger Anti Racism, Anti Poverty, Anti Privatisation , Anti War or Anti Capitalism Movements and Campaigns – Street Seen is on the Street

Therefore all those who agree with our statement as above contact us at the Street Seen Network, to get involved or simply to discuss further our aims and beliefs to see if we can find common bonds of Support and Solidarity.

Davy Carlin Signing off.

Dear friends Street Seen 4 is now on the Street from Belfast to Dublin. We intend to get it out more regular, more especially given the ever growing interest and requests for copies etc.

This issue includes reports from RAR and ARN as well as MPH, and Gay Pride through to Shell in Mayo. Also Indymedia article, Monbiot, McVerry and of course the much acclaimed poetry section amongst many other issues..

Part of Statement in Paper

Street Seen is a campaigning paper. Those that make up its editorial committee are all activists from various parts of the progressive Movement on the island. We all have a common aim, and that aim is the elimination of poverty and discrimination and for an equal distribution of wealth.

This is not a utopian vision. Every day we campaign for a better life for all. We oppose a society that attempts to segregate people so that the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. We hope to achieve a better society through our actions and through the actions of others.

We aim to include as many people as possible in our editorial decisions. We also aim to include as many people as possible in our campaigns. We do not look on ourselves as some sort of Revolutionary elite who are here to lead the people. Rather we view ourselves and our campaigns as being led by the people and for the people.

This paper has that ethos running throughout these pages. We want as many people as possible to write for this paper for the simple reason that we don't own the paper, you do. Get involved, write, campaign, and believe in it. Help change the world, or else the world will change you.

The MPH coalition statement below was carried in the main morning press. It was for example the lead letter in the Irish News, printed in full under the title - --.

'Will you join us in the Revolution to bring down Poverty'.

{That Street Seen Crew}.

On behalf of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Northern Ireland coalition we would like to thank and congratulate the thousands of people who joined us at Custom House Square on Saturday 4th June who added their voices to the Global call of Action for 2005 to eradicate Global Poverty. The Motiv8 4 G8 rally was one of a series held by the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY coalition in the UK in various cities in the run up to our mass rally in Edinburgh on 2nd July.

Make Poverty History Northern Ireland is an unprecedented coalition of Aid Agencies, Voluntary and Community Groups, Student groups and Trade unions brought together to urge governments and international decision makers to rise to the challenge of 2005 that we have set. We are calling for urgent and meaningful policy change on three critical and inextricably linked areas: trade, debt and aid.

By mobilising popular support across a unique string of events and actions, Make Poverty History NI intends to press our own government and representives to compel rich countries to fulfil their obligations and promises to help eradicate poverty.

Every three seconds a child dies due to preventable poverty, the time it takes to click your fingers. We believe 2005 offers us a unique and important opportunity to make a difference.

What can you do? July 1st is designated as an official 'White Band Day', where millions of people around the world will wear a white band in solidarity with the poorest of the poor. Wear a home-made or charity white band on this day and encourage your friends and colleagues to join you. The Waterfront Hall in Belfast will wear its own massive white band on the day- we encourage other buildings to follows suit.

On 6 July 2005, the 8 leaders of the world’s richest and most powerful countries meet for the G8 summit in Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland. A powerful message will be sent from Belfast to Edinburgh from Saturday's rally to these decision makers and we encourage people to join us in Edinburgh on the 2nd July at our mass global mobilisation attempting to Make Poverty History. Book your place on a coach to Edinburgh now by visiting www.makepovertyhistory-ni.org. Alternatively, attend the 30th June rally in Dublin where thousands are expected to gather just prior to the Edinburgh event. For details see www.makepovertyhistory.ie.

Nelson Mandela formally launching the campaign in London this year stated "Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.”

Every single day, 30,000 people are dying, needlessly, of extreme poverty. More than were dying needlessly at the time of Live Aid 20 years ago. Dying of AIDS, dying of hunger, dying of diseases like TB and Diarrhoea. Dying, often for want of medicines which we can buy over the counter in a local chemist.

We encourage you to join us to try and put a stop to this scandal.

Friends,

There are many people travelling over to the G8 from Belfast and the North. Probably between 500 - 1000 people will travel across. This will be the largest mobilisation to such a summit from any where around Ireland at any time. Many different rallies, meetings, debates, marches etc will be taking place. Although many will be making their own way across there are also buses being laid on.

I give a link to those buses below. Some people may prefer to travel with different groups while others will have no problem being on any bus as long as it gets them there and back. This will also be a great opprtunity to meet many activists involved in many different issues and campaigns.

One of MPH NI primary objectives was to raise awareness both of the G8 and our goals, and to get people to the G8, and this has been achieved in a huge way through the MPH NI rally.

In both the National and local papers we got excellent coverage -from the Newsletter who did a page and a half to the Andersonstown news who did a full page. Then we had all the TV and Radio coverage of the rally as well as participating in current affairs TV and radio shows - and now we are seeing columnists in many newspapers and editorials {The Belfast Telegraph Yesterday - the Daily Ireland Today, the Irish News today } all voicing support for various aspects of the campaign

Friends we are now seeing debates and full page articles for debate { today again in the main morning dailies} all now being opened up in the papers in the North about the G8 in general, as well as Live 8, MPH, activists travels to Scotland etc - this on the back of a brilliant rally.

In effect local public momentum having created local media momentum. In doing so many many more are now looking to go to the G8 from the North while now looking to get engaged in the debate on the G8 - this a month before the G8.

So activists may they be Grassroots {and Revolutionary Socialist} like myself, who chose to also work within MPH NI Colaition,or may it be others who chose to work outside MPH {or indeed those toe in toe out organisations} -

- and whatever one thinks of MPH NI -

a greater space nevertheless has now been opened where the debate can beginning within the wider media {and thus the wider public} -who are now focusing on the G8.

Thus providing a wider audience for us all.

Whatever people think of MPH, MPH NI have ensured now that by mobilising thousands onto the streets of Belfast that a focus is now on the G8 both in greater activism terms and the opening up of wider public and media debate.

This situation shows that when we come together on a 'specific' and work together on something like this then greater things are possible.

As stated I will detail all in relation to MPH NI at a later date, including the seeing of the largest such rally in the North {and all that was put in its path and argued against it}, the preparation of hundreds from the North to go to possibly the largest demo of any kind to be seen in Scotland’s history. - as well as the seeing of the debates, discussions etc -

I will detail such as I had done Anti War and Anti Racism Movement and so I will do the same with Make Poverty History Movement -

May it be arguing for the G8 to do something about poverty or for ourselves to organise to win a fundemental change of the present system to see that real change {of which I believe is essential}- we now have more space to debate with a lot more people aware of, and willing to hear, and even partake in that very debate. D

Some of the media reports of Belfast's Pre G8 Rally.

Will just give a few bits of each as some are quite lengthy

UTV – Two to Three Thousand people Rallied today in Belfast in a pre G8 Anti Poverty Rally.

The Newsletter - {Full Page}

Celebrities and politicians where among thousands of people at a rally in Belfast to call for an end to world poverty.
The Make Poverty History Event on Saturday was part of a campaign to put pressure on the Governments of the richest countries to address the issue of debt when they meet in Scotland next month for the G8 summit.
Between 2000- 3000 turned up, including politicians Mark Durkan, SDLP leader and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams
Lawrence Mc Bride – spokesperson for the MPH NI said the event gave people of the Province – many who could not make it to the huge demonstrations planned in Edinburgh, a chance to add their voices to the campaign.

Daily Ireland –

An Irish Coalition against word poverty is gearing up for a massive rally in Dublin to follow on from a successful demonstration in Belfast at the weekend.
Thousands of demonstrators flooded Belfast city centre on Saturday to demand global government action to rid the world of Poverty. On June 30, the centre of Dublin is expected to be thronged with thousands of anti poverty demonstrators.
Lawrence Mc Bride, one of the rally organisers said Saturdays protest had been a resounding success. He said the focus was now on getting people to Edinburgh for a planned mass rally to coincide with the group of eight summit world leaders in July.
Coalition spokeswoman Deborah Doherty said, we were delighted to see a wide range of people turn up today. There where a few thousand in attendance and we had a colourful event. Northern Ireland has truly joined the Global Campaign Movement --- Michael Briggs, director of East Belfast Community Development Association, said areas of Belfast endured conditions of poverty on a daily basis, ‘Of course the nature and scale of the poverty is different but the human experience is the same he said,’ we have come to stand in solidarity with people in developing countries and to send a message to the G8 that enough is enough

Wide-ranging agency support for

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY rally at Custom House Square

An unprecedented coalition in Northern Ireland of all the Aid and Development agencies in co-operation with the entire community and voluntary sector and Trade Union movement are calling on the public to come out and support this Saturday’s MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY event in Custom House Square, Laganside (adjacent to the Albert Clock) on Saturday 4th June at 2pm.

Gary Lightbody, Lead Singer of Snow Patrol, will be at the event. He said, “We've been heavily involved in Make Poverty History for the past year. We were told about the poverty still happening - you can't believe that it's still the same situation 20 years later. The reason is these countries are being crushed under the weight of debt. There is a solution and it's a simple one. We have to take responsibility. Our governments have to say ‘no more’. We can't go on like this. As a generation, we have to stand up and say ‘no more’. When our leaders go into the G8 summit, they have to know the whole world is demanding they pay attention to Africa and all the Third World countries.”

Deborah Doherty, a spokesperson for MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY in Northern Ireland said, “Our campaign is about the fact that a child dies from poverty every 3 seconds. It is a scandal and it is a scandal that we all can do something about. I’m delighted Snow Patrol, Brian Houston and many others are coming on Saturday. It is Northern Ireland’s chance to do something positive to alleviate world poverty.”

Saturday’s event comes on the back of the recent announcement that Bob Geldof will organise a Live8 event, 20 years after Live Aid. Like Live8, MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is not looking for financial donations but is calling for policy change by calling on G8 leaders to cancel the debt when they meet in Scotland in July.

Binnie Mwakasungula, from the Presbyterian Church of Central Africa in Karonga, Malawi, will be speaking on Saturday on his experience of how debt affects his country. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in sub-Saharan Africa with a rural population 100% dependant on agriculture. In 2002, when the country was facing starvation, the International Monetary Fund was criticised for allegedly persuading the government to sell off its grain reserves to repay international loans.

-Ends-

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORYNI
MOTIV8 4 G8

Custom House Square, Laganside, Belfast
Saturday 4th June at 2pm

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Northern Ireland today welcomed the confirmation of Live8 just days before Belfast hosts its own Motiv8 4 G8 rally. The rally has attracted celebrity support from Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, Graham Norton, Natasha Bedingfield and Ronan Keating, some of who will appear on the day.

The Motiv8 4 G8 rally is one of a series planned by the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY coalition in the UK in various cities in the run up to a mass rally in Edinburgh on 2nd July. With the addition of Live8, it will be assured that the campaign receives priority coverage on TV in the run up to the G8.

Deborah Doherty, spokesperson for MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY in Northern Ireland said, “The demands of MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY are fully compatible with Live8. Bob Geldof has consulted with our coalition and we are co-ordinating our events to ensure maximum impact. We share the same basic message, that G8 leaders must strike a significant deal at their Summit in Scotland on 6-8 July.”

She continued: “This Saturday’s rally in Belfast will be the chance for Northern Ireland to join this campaign. We have cross-party, multi-denominational support and there will be circus performers and top musicians present, as well as a wonderful array of people on the platform. It will be a day for all those who support eradicating world poverty- young and old alike.”

People are encouraged to wear a white top or wear a white band as a gesture of support at the event and can out further details of the programme for the day by visiting www.makepovertyhistory-ni.org.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY
MOTIV8 4 G8

2pm - Saturday - June 4th

Customs House Square, Laganside, Belfast
(Please note change of venue)

Saturday June 4th, Custom House Square, Laganside in Belfast will be the scene of a major Make Poverty History rally, one in a series in the UK entitled ‘Motiv8 4 G8’ in the run up to what promises to be a mammoth gathering in Edinburgh on July 2nd just prior to the G8 Summit.

Celebrities who have directly endorsed the event or will be appearing include Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, Ronan Keating, Graham Norton and Natasha Bedingfield.

“We expect thousands of people will want to come to Belfast to show their solidarity with the world’s poorest people,” said Lawrence McBride, spokesperson for the Make Poverty History coalition in Northern Ireland.

“It will be a day to focus on the fact that a child dies needlessly of poverty-related hunger or disease in the third world every 3 seconds- the equivalent of the death toll of the Tsunami every single week,” he continued.

“We have 3 demands: Trade Justice, Dropping Debt, and More and Better Aid. By simply agreeing to do so, it is entirely possible world leaders could reverse these startling statistics this year. We do not lack the physical resources.”

“The people of Northern Ireland want to see the G8 leaders put promises into action when they meet in Scotland in July. By coming to the rally and wearing something white or a white band, people can support the world’s poor and help bring about real change.

-Tony Blair will be under immense pressure to secure a deal at the G8 table.”
