(2) Land: The Claim of the Community

A two-day international conference will be held in Dublin on the 9th and 10th of
(Thursday/Friday) October, titled
'Land: The Claim of the Community'

Billed as "An international conference to explore initiatives in affordable
housing, infrastructure provision and local government finance" the event aims
to identify the basic issues and underlying principles regarding land
ownership and then suggest reforms that address them in a practical way.
Although the setting is contemporary Ireland, the themes are universal - the
privatisation of land and other natural resources began thousands of years ago
and continues apace today on a global scale. It is both deeply immoral and
environmentally unsustainable. What can be done about it?

The conference will review initiatives abroad and propose workable mechanisms by
which the 'Claim of the Community' can be both expressed and implemented.

This conference is organised by Feasta, the Foundation for the Economics of
Sustainability, and the Henry George Foundation

(3) FEASTA's new book available now
..............................................................
A sustainable world would be entirely dependent on renewable sources of energy,
but how well would such sources work out? Would they mean the end of air
transport and a return to sailing ships, damp, cold rooms, and horses and carts?
FEASTA's new book looks at the reality and explores the transition to renewables
in the face of a looming oil shortage.

Feasta, The Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability aims to explore and
promote the characteristics ‚ economic, cultural and environmental ‚ that a
society must have in order to be truly sustainable. It aims to publish the
results of its research as widely as possible so that people can begin to change
the way they think and the way they live.

The 336-page book, Before The Wells Run Dry – Ireland’s Transition to Renewable
Energy, has been published by Feasta this month. The book makes it clear that
the amount of energy available to the world from oil and gas will begin to
contract within the next twelve years, and that while coal is abundant, it would
be a bad investment to develop it to fill the gap. This is not just because it
is a dirty fuel which causes global warming. The main reason for rejecting it is
that renewable energy sources, particularly wind, provide many more units of
energy for sale from each unit of energy invested in developing them than coal
is able to do.

The book is based on the papers given at a conference, Ireland’s Transition to
Renewable Energy, held at the Tipperary Institute in Thurles over three days in
Autumn 2002. Richard Douthwaite, who was mainly responsible for organising the
conference and who has edited the book and written an introduction and
conclusion, was keen to ensure that there was a wide range of viewpoints as well
as of issues covered. The head of Shell's Scenarios Team was there, there is a
paper by the Executive Vice President of Exxon Mobil, the nuclear industry was
represented by the Head of Communications at the World Nuclear Association. But
these and other spokesmen for the corporate sector were heavily out-numbered by
some 30 other contributors, all quite clearly experts on their fields.

The book is available through the Feasta office and through bookshops in Britain
and Ireland for E12.95 in Ireland and £9.95 in Britain.

(4) Sustainable Community - Weekends Away

For the next few months ‘The Village’ is offering weekends away for people who
want to learn more about sustainable community and their exciting housing
project. The ‘experience weekend’ will allow you to examine the architectural
plans, drawings and models of what this new eco-settlement will look like and
include a guided tour of the lands that the company intends to develop.

Accommodation is provided for in a spacious and recently renovated 4 - bedroom
terraced house. Situated on the main street of Cloughjordan, the house
'overlooks' and has direct access to the proposed development land.

Cost will be €35 euro per person

(5) Cultivate Balance - Chi Gung and Yoga

An integral approach to sustainability is essential, we need to look after
ourselves before we can protect our environment or campaign for social justice.
Each Thursday at Cultivate there will be a regular short 45 minute lunchtime
energising Chi Gung workshop. This gentle, energy raising practice reduces
stress, builds stamina, increases vitality, and enhance the immune system. It
has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory,
lymphatic and digestive functions. Led by Jan Golden of Tai Chi Ireland. These
sessions will start on October 2nd from 12.30 – 13.15 and be held each Thursday
after that.

Yoga is another system with huge benefits. A class suitable for beginners and
onwards is being held by Sustainable Ireland's Grainne McLaughlin each Wednesday
night from 6.00 to 7.30. This class will be held in St Kevin's Hall, Bloomfeild

(6) Living Dangerously – Are Household Cleaning Products Making You Sick?

Lifestyle and environment are now the biggest threats to human health. In this
workshop at the Cultivate Centre Pat thomas, author of the best selling book
“Cleaning Yourself To Death: How Safe Is Your Home” will explain the symptoms
and sources of toxic overload and presents positive suggestions about what we
can do to avoid them.

Her new book “Living Dangerously: Are Everyday Toxins are making you sick”. she
Her new book ‘Living Dangerously’ is a different kind of health book. Like this
workshop, it is aimed at anyone concerned about the vague feelings of
un-wellness that are all too prevalent in modern life, mixing recent, quality
research with practical advice about how to prevent environmental hazards from

Community broadcasting has a character distinct from both public service and
commercial broadcasting and should be recognised as a third strand in Irish
broadcasting by the Dept. of Communications… and the Broadcasting Authority of
Ireland …

We need to ensure that Dublin City has its own vibrant, independent and
sustainable Community Media sector… as an important democratic counter balance
to the growth of commercial media and the influence of media empires… A
strategic objective is to develop and resource an independent not-for-profit
Community TV Channel…

(8) Vital Viewing - Notice to Quit

There is still a few days left to see this impressive exhibit.

'Notice to Quit: Eviction Scenes Ireland 1886-1890'

The exhibition Notice to Quit, features photographs of evictions during the late
1880s in locations all over Ireland including counties Clare, Kildare, Donegal,
Kerry, Galway and Wexford. The images, which were taken between 1886 and 1890 by
photographers from the Dublin-based Lawrence Studios, are among the first
examples of photojournalism in Ireland. They provide a unique record of the Plan
of Campaign, a tenants’ rent protest that subsequently led to hundreds of
evictions. The campaign received widespread coverage in British and Irish press.

(9) Campaigns - GM Free Ireland

GM-free Ireland - www.GMfreeireland.org

GM-free Ireland is an emerging network for political and legal action to keep
Ireland GM-free. Now that the EU has lifted the five year GM moratorium,
biotech / agribusiness giants are poised to invade our island with GM crops and
livestock. This would irreversibly contaminate our ecosystem with unacceptable
environmental, social and economic consequences for farmers, consumers and
future generations.

The new Biosafety Protocol allows us to prevent this disaster before it happens.
We should lobby the EU to designate part of its territory as a GM-free
ecological reserve as an insurance against GM disasters. Ireland is the
candidate of choice because of (i) our geographical isolation, (ii) we are the
most upwind from airborne GM pollution, and (iii) our previous GM exposure is
amongst the lowest in the EU.

Title: Youghal through the Ages. History and Society Conference
When: 26-28 September 2003
Where: Market Square, Youghal, Co Cork
Description: In the last few decades Youghal has gone through a difficult phase.
Crippled by recurrent economic down-turns, the town had seemed to receive a new
lease of life under the Seaside Towns Tax Scheme. However, the ensuing new
building projects may have done more damage than good. The conference will
highlight the history of Youghal from 600 to 1600 and will specially look at the
question how the resort can reconcile its Heritage Town status with new
developments. The difficulties encountered here will also apply to other
so-called Heritage Towns in Ireland.

Title: Basic Bateson

and ecological theorists of the 20th century. Throughout his career he stood in
strong opposition to the reductionist approach of modern western science… an
approach he saw as inexorably destructive to humanity and to our place in the
Biosphere. He synthesised his ideas in two seminal works… steps to an Ecology of
Mind and Mind & nature: A necessary Unity. This workshop will explore the ideas

Title: Communecology-One
