Court date - April 3rd - High Court- Good luck ed

March 26, 2003

March 26, 2003

(17:17) The High Court has fixed Thursday 3 April to hear an application by a retired Irish Army officer who wants to stop the Government allowing the use of Shannon Airport as a refuelling stop for aircraft carrying troops to Iraq.

Edward horgan of Newtown, Castletroy in Limerick, a former Army Commandant, is challenging the legality and constitutionality of the Government's decision to provide facilities for US troops and military aircraft at Shannon.

His senior counsel, John Rogers, sought an early court hearing today.

He said Mr horgan is concerned at the continued breaches of Ireland's duty as a neutral State not to permit the movement of troops or munitions across the territory.

The President of the High Court Mr Justice Finnegan fixed 3 April for the full hearing.

We have a precedent for an English politician who thought he had a divine mandate to clear away God's enemies. His name was Oliver Cromwell. There is no doubt that Blair, like his predecessor, is a thoroughly evil man.

Mr. Blair is the son of Irish emigrants from Co. Donegal .....
Hence the Cromwell analogy is a little strained ....

He is actually the personification of the upwardly mobile Irish Diaspora ....

Strange but true .....

Being from Donegal won’t protect you from imperialist tendencies. Kaisers and Tsars weren’t descended from the Caesars but they were still inspired by them.

... that being from Donegal is or should be considered in any way particularly significant in itself. I am certainly not suggesting that the inhabitants of that fine county most dear to my heart are more or less prone to imperialist tendencies than anyone else ....

What I was getting at was this:
Blair is not an "Englishman" in the narrow sense of the word (despite his nicely manicured public school accent). He is a product of the Irish Diaspora (who has been co-opted into the British -or if you prefer Anglo-American imperial - establishment).

He is not an "Englishman with a mission from God" but rather "a Paddy, who went to elocution lessons and made it good in the second generation, with a mission from God" ....

Like it or not, that's what you've got ...
Make of it what you will .....
But let's not be too simplistic in our historical analogies .... crude comparisons with Cromwell do neither man justice ......
