The IMF and World Bank have been captured by eco-zealots and lost sight of their original purpose, says Tilak Doshi. Developing countries, desperate for energy and growth, are the biggest losers.

yet another attempt to build on the Dublin mountains

Repeatedly-rejected proposal to isolate old people in the middle of nowhere turns up *again* on Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown agenda

The long-running saga of attempts to get planning permission for Rod McGovern's proposed "retirement village" in the Dublin mountains - far from any other services, with no public transport and the M50 blocking walking - and cutting off a chunk of the mountains widely used for hillwalking and dog walking - has returned yet again.

A private school was proposed, and rejected, for the very same site in 2005. In 2012 the County Manager rejected the plan; submissions from the general public as well as An Taisce and An Oige were strongly against; and councillors rejected it again. In June 2014, with a new set of councillors in place, the plan came back again - and was rejected by planners, public consultation and councillors yet again. (See Indymedia feature story at http://www.indymedia.ie/article/104838).

Now the plan has resurfaced yet again: Cllrs Josepha Madigan (FG) and Tom Murphy (FF) have put forward near-identical proposals for last-minute changes to the County Development Plan 2016-22 with a minor (but unspecified) amendment to limit the scale of the development. These are due to be voted on on Thursday 15th October.

Contact details for Councillors are on http://ecouncil.dlrcoco.ie:9071/mgMemberIndex.aspx?bcr=1 - please email your councillors to express your opposition to this proposal.

The motion was roundly defeated - not on Tuesday but on Thursday in a run-on session, in the course of which Cllr Hugh Lewis apparently mentioned having been offered money for voting a certain way. Cue uproar in the Council chamber, whose members are shocked - shocked - that anyone would ever be offered money for anything to do with planning.

Interestingly enough that session is not available on the DLR CoCo webcast site http://www.dlrcoco.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcasts. The one time you might actually be interested in seeing the mighty force of local democracy in action...
