Protest Against Water Metering in Huntstown, Dublin 15 Underway

category international | anti-capitalism | press release author Wednesday November 13, 2013 12:00author by Turing - ANTI AUSTERITY ALLIANCE, Dublin 15 Report this post to the editors

Press statement 13 November 2013

ANTI AUSTERITY ALLIANCE, Dublin 15

Campaigners are taking part in a second protest against water metering in housing estates in the Huntstown area of Dublin 15. Residents and members of the Anti Austerity Alliance are delaying work on the installation of meters by Irish Water in the Huntstown Wood estate.

Speaking at the protest, local Huntstown resident, Bernadette Rynne, said: " We find it incredible that they are digging up our footpaths to charge us for water when there has been a water shortage and the obvious thing to do is fix the leaks. "

."

" We simply can't take any more charges on top of the property tax, pay cuts and all the austerity imposed in the last few years. How are families expected to pay hundreds of euros in water bills next year? We have had enough

Local councillor, Ruth Coppinger, said the protest was directed in particular at the political parties behind the water charges. " Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will pay a heavy price for water charges in the elections next May. But Labour will be particularly punished for its complete lies on this issue. Three years ago, they took out expensive media ads saying they would protect householders against water charges, now they are foisting them on working class people."

It is impossible to see how Labour have any political credibility now. I hope that they are thoroughly hosed down at next year's locals.

Also, I hope that the members of the grey vote who cannot get out to cast their verdict make sure to get a postal vote in good time. Check with elderly neighbours and friends to see that they get their vote as they must be particualrly pissed off and positively frightened at what is happening.
