Following the racist comments of Donegal Fianna Fail Councillor Sean
McEniff, Anti-Fascist Action Ireland and others have called for a picket on
an hotel he owns in Dublin city centre.

2pm - Camden Court Hotel, Camden Street, Dublin 2.

Background:

Speaking with Niall Delaney about the Traveling community on Ocean FM on
January 17th 2013 McEniff said: “The situation is Niall; I think there
should be an isolated community of them some place. Give them houses and
keep them all together.”

The Donegal Travellers Project says it was deeply shocked, saddened and
outraged by the comment.

Sinn Féin TD for Donegal North East Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said
"Anti-traveller racism in all forms is unacceptable in Ireland, and it is
mind boggling to think that Councillor McEniff would think ethnic slurs are
tolerable.".

Not long after, a house where 13 members of the Traveling Community were to
be house was burnt down.

Independent Thomas Pringle T.D. says that while councillors Sean McEniff
and Eugene Dolan did not light the match which destroyed the €230,000 home,
their comments fueled the flames of unjust hatred. “Donegal County Council
bought the house for a traveller family and local councillors Seán McEniff
and Eugene Dolan made racist statements about the decision, and last night
the house was burned.

Unfortunately anti traveller racism is all too common.

I grew up around some travellers in primary school, and they didn't do much to redeem their name/reputation.

Having said that there are some decent travellers i have encountered in my later years, one saved a young boy from a settled community from drowning.

There are some decent ones around, its a pity there are some families that give the rest of them a bad name.

In this day and age,i think anti traveller racism is wholly unacceptable.
