Renowned Investigative Journalist Greg Palast Talks about Fracking in Enniskillen, Carrick on Shannon and Dublin

category national | crime and justice | event notice author Wednesday June 27, 2012 13:22author by One of No Fracking Ireland - No Fracking Ireland Report this post to the editors

Enniskillen (No.6 Cafe Merlot) - Monday 2nd July 1pm
Carrick-On-Shannon (Bush Hotel) - Monday 2nd July 8pm
Dublin (Connolly Books, Temple Bar) - Tuesday 3rd July 1pm
Dublin (The Ireland Institute, Pearse St) - Tue 3rd July 7.30 pm

Greg Palast is best known as the investigative reporter who uncovered how Katherine Harris purged thousands of African-Americans from Florida voters rolls in the 2000 Presidential Election.

Author of the New York Times bestsellers, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy and Armed Madhouse, Palast is Patron of the Trinity College Philosophical Society, an honor previously held by Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde.

"A cross between Sam Spade and Sherlock Holmes" (Jim Hightower, The Nation), Greg Palast turned his skills to journalism after two decades as a top investigator of corporate fraud and racketeering. Palast's reports appear on BBC's Newsnight and in Britain's Guardian, Rolling Stone and Harper's.

Palast directed the US' government's largest racketeering case in history (that garnered a $4.3 billion jury award) and the investigation of the Exxon Valdez.

Palast is recipient of the George Orwell Courage in Journalism Prize for his BBC television documentary, Bush Family Fortunes.

With his most recent publication Vulture's Picnic - the New York Times bestselling author of Armed Madhouse offers a globetrotting, Sam Spade-style investigation that blows the lid off the oil industry, the banking industry, and the governmental agencies that aren't regulating either. This is the story of the corporate vultures that feed on the weak and ruin our planet in the process-a story that spans the globe and decades.

For Vultures' Picnic Palast built a team that reads like a casting call for a Hollywood thriller - a Swiss multilingual investigator, a punk journalist, and a gonzo cameraman-to reveal how environmental disasters like the Gulf oil spill, the Exxon Valdez, and lesser-known tragedies such as Tatitlek and Torrey Canyon are caused by corporate corruption, failed legislation, and, most interestingly, veiled connections between the financial industry and energy titans.

He is bringing his insights into the global hydrofracking rush to Ireland at the request of local anti-fracking campaigners. He, as a long term resident of New York, has had a front row seat in a conflict raging there between multinational oil and gas companies and a mass of grassroots campaigners who do not want the Marcellus Shale to be fracked.

The first chapter of his latest book is available here: http://www.gregpalast.com/vulturespicnic/documents/Vult...r.pdf

Mick Mc Evoy LADS. I am not a Sinn Fein memeber or voter. BUT I was there in the senate chamber yesterday and Phil Flanagan did a FECKIN fantastic job!!!! He has stated in this thread that he and SF want a BAN. The party president Gerry Adams is quoted in the Leitrim observer stating SF will BAN fracking in N.I!!! Give him some credit and realise he is an ally in this campaign. I watched paul frew DUP Mla state 'no questions' to the Committee chair. Patsy McGlone SDLP, Daithi McKay SF and Steven Agnew Greens did a great job in Stormont yesterday. Phil and SF are on OUR side. Thank you Phil. Keep up the great work.

Leah Doherty Fair enough Mick - Phil Flanagan did indeed hold Tamboran to account no-one is disputing that, but when your party has called for fracking to be banned, it is a little strange to say the least, that then when sitting in front of the frackers in a public government, recorded session that you do not declare, that your party have voted for this practice to be banned, and are working to ensure that it is. That does not exclude Phil Flanagan from the proceedings, it simply would mean that Phil Flanagan is there to show/explain why his party want it banned. The Leitrim Observer article (rarely read outside of Leitrim) you posted was from a night in Carrick-on-Shannon when Martin Ferris stood up and told a room full of Sinn Fein activists and supporters that the irish government need to prove to the people that fracking is ok - now that's a far cry from - the Irish government need to ban fracking, I asked them on the night to clarify what Ferris had just said, stating "but ye have already called for a ban" - that's when Adam's stepped in and said yes we have and we are committed to that. I wonder how many people who know about fracking in the north know that in fact Sinn Fein have called for fracking to be banned. Phil Flanagan when speaking in stormont yesterday said there are many people with concerns about fracking and that he shares those concerns, aactually there are many people calling for a ban on fracking in Ireland nth and sth (look at petition figures) and his party have joined those people, that's what he should have said. Look it may not seem much to some but this is how our political system works, you play your cards safe and you see which way the wind blows. See how public opinion goes - yes it's very subtle but that's what is going on. I distinctly remember Eamonn Ryan of the green party standing outside the dail with lots of protesters holding a Shell to Sea placard - fast forward a short while and Eamonn Ryan as a member of the then government pretty much told the Shell to Sea campaign, to forget about it, and Shells plans had to go ahead. That's politics for ya - so my point is, I hope that from here on in when Phil Flanagan as energy spokesperson for Sinn Fein is speaking publicly on fracking that he clearly states his position that what he is doing is fighting for a ban on fracking, on behalf of his party. I'm not trying to take away from Phil Flanagan's performance yesterday - I'm simply stating I want to hear SF being straight in public and stating that they want fracking banned because ......

Ciaran McClean If you are looking for SF to be straight on the fracking issue then you will be waiting for quite sometime leah. They have slayed every sacred cow in the republician field in order to become popular. I will not take away from the efforts of Phil Flannagan with regards to the fracking issue. He reminds me of republicians i used to know here in Co Tyrone in the 1980's in terms of being passionate about SF. Unfortunatly they, like Phil, put their faith in Gerry Adams and wound up on a slab at the morgue. The writing below tells of how SF will be like the sow and eat its own litter, they will do so regarding fracking too! https://www.facebook.com/notes/wilfred-spender/mcguinne...84707
