She was instrumental in bringing to light much of the systemic institutional abuse by religious organisations that occurred. Mary, you were an inspiration to journalism and you will be missed Mary Raftery, through her investigative Journalism was key to the exposure of the dark underbelly of the religious institutions in Ireland through her relentless and skilled research and through her documentary films "cardinal sins" and "states of fear". She will be sorely missed at a time where proper investigative journalism has largely been replaced by a servile brand of repeating government and institutional press releases as "news". Why is it that real journalists like Mary pass away prematurely whilst the likes of Eoghan harris seem to live on forever?? R.I.P. Mary. Jump To Comment: 3 2 1Mary's humanist funeral took place today . After the service at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham her plain wicker coffin was shouldered by women . The coffin and hearse were unadorned by flowers as Mary had requested that money be donated instead to Dublin Zoo . Journalist Fintan O'Toole gave a very moving homily to his old friend and colleague . As well as members of her family there were several survivors of clerical abuse in attendance to give the woman who had done so much to highlight their cause the send-off she deserved .
RIP Mary Raftery
