We've all had the spectre of the simple, honest US soldier forced into fighting a war he doesn't want to be part of, doing his duty despite hostility all around him, invoked at one stage or another during discussions of the Iraqi Occupation. Often this figure is mistily conflated with other mythic figures: candybar dispensing US troops in the rubble of post-war Berlin, or US airplanes dropping crates of canned spam in the Phillipines. Like other popularly held generalisations it's a lie. This video on youtube is a trivial example of the bestial inhumanity of some soldiers. read full story / add a comment

Wednesday 29th November saw the 'Women in Struggle' DVD and discussion held in the University of Ulster Jordanstown Campus. The DVD charted the key role of women within the Irish freedom struggle from its conception right upto the modern era. The event was oraganised by the Jordanstown Ógra cumann, and they were delighted to have in their company, Sinn Féin's National Director fo Gender Equality, Eibhlin Glenholmes. read full story / add a comment

As Ahern does his best false outrage, he also quielty suggest he will ban the Guantomano Express from Ireland. A plane he described yesterday as more likley coming here for a golfing holiday, yet now he agrees to ban it, what other planes will be on this list and how will he ban them from Irish airspace if civilian planes don't need to give notice. http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/1129/cia.html In his written submission the the cmttee he desrcibes how many thousands of planes go through Ireland and the Gardai have investigated 6 complaints (It was 4). http://foreignaffairs.gov.ie/Press_Releases/20061130/22...2.htm read full story / add a comment

Sir Clive Thompson, former Shell marketing executive, is the director of the now-collapsed Farepak firm which has lost 150,000 low-income savers around €600 each. Thompson, chairman of Farepak's parent company European Home Retail, has a long track record of controversy - in 1998 he made a speech at the CBI annual dinner where he asserted that statutory union recognition should be put in a handbook to help firms improve their "pest control techniques". read full story / add a comment

Responsibility for domestic pet animals does not lie within the sphere of responsibility of any Government department. Senator Jim Higgins raised the issue with the Minister for Agricultue and Food, Deputy Mary Coughlan at the request of Anvil Ireland. In her letter to Senator Higgins Minister Coughlan states " The position as regards my Department is that its statutory responsibility relates only to the welfare and protection of farmed animals and does not extend to animals kept as pets. I understand that the matter of ratification of the European Convention for the Protection of Pets and the responsibility of Departments is under consideration". I have tabled a question to the European Commission pointing out that as of now no Irish Government Department has responsibility for pets and urging the Commission to insist that responsibility he assigned to a particular Department without further delay. read full story / add a comment |
