Yesterday saw hundreds participate in nonviolent direct action to shut down Adermaston - Britain's nuclear weapons factory.
Friends from London, Oxford, Farmhouse Catholic Workers and Trident Ploughshares joined hundreds of others in an attempt to nonviolently shut down Aldermaston.
We will try to incorporate solidaritywith this direct action into this week's GPO anti-war vigil Background on Monday's Aldermaston blockade see http://blockawe.blogspot.com and http://www.tridentploughshares.org US/UK went to war in Iraq to dismantle WMD...meanwhile Aldermaston continues to produce WMD. A World Poverty Commemorative Stone, crafted by Irish artist Stuart McGrath, was unveiled on Custom House Quay during this year’s commemoration to mark the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The work is a collaborative effort undertaken by The 17th October Group, (a coalition of over 25 anti-poverty community groups and NGOs) and Dublin City Council and the Dublin Docklands Development Authority. This year events also took place in Arklow, Thurles, shannon, Westport, Tipperary Town, Rosmuc, Letterkenny, Blanchardstown, and Belfast.

I began these writings on Catholicism in response to Ciaron O’Reilly’s request that I review Harry Browne’s Hammered by the Irish. I have never met Harry but I am a long time friend of Ciaron O’Reilly one of the defendants in the series of trials that followed the Catholic Worker /Ploughshare Activists’ attack on an American War plane that was stationed in a hangar at shannon Airport in clear violation of Irish neutrality. read full story / add a comment

Orchestra-in-Donegal-Residency

The Spanish String Orchestra Concerto Málaga has been appointed “Orchestra-in-Donegal-residency” in County Donegal/Ireland. The residency starts in November 2008.
Founded in 1996, this brilliant string ensemble, conducted by the renowned Italian Maestro Massimo Paris, will work closely with the community across the county, focusing on the key areas of performance, musical education and instrumental tuition.

This innovative project is promoted by the County Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership, Donegal County Council and the collaboration of the Junta the Andalucía.

A relaxed yet determined crowd gathered at the monthly vigil in shannon this Sunday evening to protest against the ongoing use of the airport by the US military and CIA. Not surprisingly there was an unidentified aircraft sitting on the airport tarmac at the time. And also not surprisingly, the Gardai were determined to stop any of the concerned vigil attendees from identifying it. read full story / add a comment
