It was probably the most important anti-war action to happen in Ireland this century – and it was certainly the most daring. At shannon Airport five people took on the might of the US military – and put a Navy war-plane out of action. Even more amazingly, they ultimately convinced a jury that to do so was not a crime. The Galway Alliance Against War marked the 7th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan yesterday, Thursday 20th November and called on the Irish government to withdraw Irish troops from this occupied country. Ireland’s involvement in this conflict does not stop at shannon airport. Irish officers are presently working alongside NATO forces in Kabul and some of those soldiers are known to come from Galway’s Liam Mellows barracks. read full story / add a comment

Today at shannon peace activists flew in from Dublin and Germany, drove from Cork and L:imerick to attend a peace vigil at shannon in solidarity with a European day of action against European complicity with unlawful wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the US torture rendition programme. read full story / add a comment

In Ennis district court today Thursday 13 November, Judge Mangan adjourned a charge of obstructing/impeding an airport fire officer, brought against the former UN peacekeeper and anti-torture campaigner, Edward Horgan, of Castletroy, Co. Limerick. Having heard that Horgan’s summons cited the wrong act and did not come as stated from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the case was adjourned to 8 January. Horgan went to the airport on 18 June 2008, on a tip-off that Learjet N54PA was due to arrive from Florida via Newfoundland. Flight logs showed that N54PA had landed several times, including 3 June 2008, at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Horgan walked into the security office to demand that the aircraft be searched for prisoners, and its crew questioned about recent and past activities, and insisted on remaining while the plane was being refuelled in order to confirm whether Gardai searched the aircraft or not. read full story / add a comment

On Monday 10 November US a US Air force executive jet, reg no 40109, a learjet 35 or a C 21A in military terminology, was being refuelled at shannon airport, while being protected by a special garda escort. We dont yet know who the passengers were, but such luxuary transports are not for one star privates, they are normally reserved for one star generals and upwards. Some of these generals have been guilty of war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is most likely that the Gardai did not search the aircraft to ascertain if any war criminals were on board. read full story / add a comment

Criminally complicit in facilitating the transit of CIA torture flights via pit stop Ireland, it's reported that the Government is shaping up to do a cap-in-hand spineless slither to "the incoming US administration on the issue of extraordinary renditions and on the US military's use of shannon Airport ... (and a) Cabinet committee will examine and strengthen legal provisions to ensure that gardaí and airport authorities have adequate legal powers for search and inspection of aircraft.
