On January 11th. 2002 the U.S. opened its twilight zone and star chamber at it's military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Guantanamo has come to symbolise the fast track acceptance of kidnapping torture as mainstream U.S. policy. shannon Airport in Ireland has been used extensively for refueling of illegal kidnapping flights. Tens of thousands of others are detained and tortured in U.S. gulags in Iraq, Afghanistan, Diego Garcia, aboard ships and elsewhere known and unknown. read full story / add a comment

Shannonwatch.org, a website set up in December 2008 to document US military traffic and rendition flights through shannon Airport has become the victim of organised international attacks. The attacks which started on January 8th are being repeated, and efforts to keep the website live are currently proving difficult. The website managers are determined that they will not be silenced however, and will continue in one form or another to publish information on military and suspect CIA flights through shannon. read full story / add a comment

Israel has been using a huge amount of munitions and explosives in its assault on Gaza. War crimes have been committed during this assault in which over 800 Palestinian people have been killed including as many as 250 children. Over the past 48 hours four Hercules military aircraft landed and were refuelled at shannon airport. Their destination is not yet known, but in recent times only about four military aircraft were refuelled at shannon per month. The possibility exists that Israel is being resupplies with munitions expended in its murderous attacks on Palestinians by aircraft transiting through Ireland and Irish airspace with the permission of the Irish Government. read full story / add a comment

Alrighty netizens? So, the last of the turkey sandwiches have been dusted off and New Year's day hangover has become a memory as faint as that beer stain on the new carpet. Well, we here in Indymedia.ie have a favour to ask. We are hoping you have it in your hearts to extend the season of good will just a little bit longer. Just long enough to come down for banter and dance at a fundraiser we are organizing on January 15th, one of our little irregular efforts to boost the coffers of our decrepit server fund.

As editors, we more than most, realise that Indymedia.ie has seen it's ups and downs in contributions and content over the past while. Editors have come and gone, and the very nature of online publishing and user generated content has been fundamentally changed with the Web 2.0 revolution. But one clear fact remains, once the dust of discussion has settle: the Irish movement have yet to create a media outlet with the reach and scope of Indymedia.ie. Until something better comes along, Indymedia.ie remains a vital communicative node for those in struggle in Ireland, it bonds us together where usually we fracture.

So, here comes the begging hand.....

In a recent article in the Irish Times, Young Green Party chairperson Barra Rowntree expressed his disappointment that the large Dublin Gaza protest had been disrupted by "a small group of fanatics".

Speaking after attending the protest, Roantree said the fact some people had used the opportunity to burn the Israeli flag and dress children in military fatigues was "not only unhelpful, but utterly contradictory to the aims of the world peace movement": "Those who burn flags and glorify violence only fan the flames of the tragic conflict in the Middle East." read full story / add a comment

As another year begins, peace and human rights activists in Ireland’s mid-West continue to oppose the role of shannon airport in war and torture. The first events of the year will include a Peace Camp commemoration on Jan 6th, followed by the regular monthly vigil on Jan 11th. Monitoring of known torture/rendition planes and military flights will also continue in 2009 as part of the ongoing efforts to end Irish complicity in war and illegal trafficking of prisoners. read full story / add a comment
