Vertex Aerospace LLC, formerly raytheon Aerospace LLC, was acquired by Veritas Capital, a private equity investment firm, in 2001. The company changed its name from raytheon Aerospace LLC in June 2003, but raytheon Company (its former parent) retains about a quarter of the company. Vertex Aerospace LLC has its headquarters in Madison, Miss. The company is considered one of the leaders in aviation and aerospace technical services, and its 6,300 employees operate in 42 states and 32 countries. About 95 percent of its sales are for the U.S. government, and its annual 2001 sales totaled about $500 million. From 1997 to 2002, Vertex Aerospace (then raytheon Aerospace) received around $2.1 billion in U.S. government contracts. Former parent raytheon, which maintains an interest in Vertex Aerospace, had more than 5,300 contracts with the U.S. government from 1990 through 2002 worth nearly $58.5 billion. List of principlals shows many US government ties and conflicts of interest. read full story / add a comment

Over 500 people turned out today for a great march against the US/UK war on Iraq and Afghanistan. Starting in Parnell Square it made its way down O'Connell where the suppport of passers by was occasionally made clear by cheers of support, up Dame Street and back down to the island on O'Connell St where we were all corralled during the speeches. It isn't clear why the organisers agreed to this corralling because it meant that almost no-one could see the speakers. Speakers were generally interesting - great to hear the raytheon 9 spokesperson - but mostly were the same people who speak at every IAWM march or variations of same. Overall a good demo and fair play to the organisers. Shannon next on October 28th for the demo called by Antiwar Ireland! read full story / add a comment ![]()

Rice’s new’ Middle East is depressingly and wearyingly familiar to anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the history of imperialist interventions in the region. Just like those British and French colonialists who sat over maps a century ago redrawing boundaries across the Middle East, the US, the UK and the Israelis imagine they can shape a subcontinent regardless of the needs or desires of the majority of the people who live there. read full story / add a comment

The Belfast High court today lifted most of the restrictions on the raytheon 9. Veteran Civil Rights activist and revolutionary socialist Eamonn McCann told Blackshamrock.org today that he and the other 8 men facing charges relating to the decommissioning of raytheon's computers are as of today no longer prevented from meeting up with each other, holding meetings in groups of more than 3, or from attending anti-war functions. Normal bail signing restrictions and the restriction of the nine from the Branch Road, where raytheon has its premises in the Ulster Science and Technology park, are to remain in place. At the initial bail hearing, the judge had hinted that human rights legislation might prevent the High Court from preventing the Nine from exercising their right to freedom of assembly. The main effect of the lifting of these restrictions, said McCann, is that they are now no longer prevented from taking part in the campaign. read full story / add a comment
