We reproducing this article by Dr Rory Hearne, Researcher & Author of "Public Private Partnerships in Ireland: failed experiment or the way forward ?" to highlight some important background and context to this issue Fears about the privatisation of public water provision was a central motivating factor behind the Right2Water protest movement but concerns about the privatisation of water are held by many other political and civil society groupings. The recently published Expert Commission on Water Services Report highlighted a widespread public “concern about the potential privatisation of Irish Water”. They stated that public responses to their consultation “expressed concerns that water charges, and metering of domestic households, could eventually lead to privatisation”. The Report notes that this “was sometimes set in the context of wider concerns about privatisation of public services, and the commodification of water”. However, it is widely known that various public and private interests have been preparing the ground for the potential privatisation of the Irish public water system. In this article I provide evidence that should concern all those worried about the potential privatisation of Irish public water. This centres on the on-going implementation of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the provision of public water infrastructure in Ireland. These PPPs are a form of ‘creeping privatisation’ that makes the full privatisation of our public water system a real possibility in the future. read full story / add a comment

Corruption and incompetence rule in certain corridors of Dublin City Council. Coventa the company which somehow won the tender (despite not being a party to the bidding) and Dublin City Council have pushed the cost up to nearly €100 million for the land. Council Manager Owen Keegan said not one cent of the €96 million that has already been spent will be clawed back if the plan doesn't go ahead. Despite also as extra €36 million in extra costs many Councillors state that this whole thing has nothing to do with mad ideas from Bertie Ahern. Even if it does not go ahead it will still cost €600 million, and obviously this is the best interests of every else abroad who likes to sabotage Irish planning and make a few million doing so. Renewable energy is the future but not for the old school chums of yesteryear. read full story / add a comment

The notion is as absurd as it is reflective on how cravenly this Junior coalition partners will act do to stay in power. The School for Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London organised a conference on the Left in Palestine through it's Palestine Society from February 27th-28th. As far as I know this is the first conference covering this specific area of the Palestinian question and, thus, it had the potential to open up much needed debate on the subject. read full story / add a comment

For years now, we have been reading about plans for the Leinster Orbital Route (LOR) or Dublin Outer Orbital Route (DOOR). Earlier this year, the NRA published a Feasibility Report from 2007, which shows route of the LOR passing along the side of the Hill of Tara. Notably, the route goes about 1km north of the Blundelstown Interchange, between the N3 and M3 motorway. However, last week Meath County Councillors were told to freeze planning on a 2km corridor on either side of the route. So, it is possible the route will pass directly through the Blundelstown Interchange, the Hill of Tara complex and the proposed UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, it appears that this was the plan all along, and that the route has been chosen before the public consultation even begins. read full story / add a comment

Rory Hearne, People Before Profit Alliance Dublin South East, local resident and active campaigner with the Combined Residents Against the Incinerator speaking on the EPA decision said: "Local residents of Ringsend, Irishtown and Sandymount are once more devasated and dissapointed by a state body's decision in relation to the incinerator. I was one of the hundred or so local residents that attended the EPA's Oral Hearing and made statements to it outlining the impact on the health of the community if the incinerator was to ahead. However just as with An Bord Pleanala the EPA has ruled in favour of an anti-community, illogical and unsustainable monster incinerator. It is a ppp and therefore will be operated to maximise profits for the private company which will result in maximising waste production rather than minimsing and reclying waste. read full story / add a comment

St. Michael’s Estate organised a protest at City Hall on Monday the 1st December at 6.00pm to coincide with the Dublin City Council meeting scheduled for 7.00pm where councillors will report to the City Council after their Boston ‘Junket’ to look at a housing project. Locals from St. Michaels Estate, O’Devaney Gardens and Dominic Street are protesting to show their anger at the Minister and Dublin City Council’s lack of action. read full story / add a comment
