The United Left Alliance was launched during the week on a socialist programme and planning to stand in the forthcoming elections. The meeting was well attended and addressed by speakers from People Before Profit, the Socialist Party and Unemployed & Workers' Action Group. The mood was upbeat and even euphoric. However, their charter does not mention imperialism and there were some prominent absences among their sponsors, including éirigí and Workers' Solidarity Movement. There was hardly a mention of work-place organisation and this essential work is not being focussed on by either the ULA or the 1% Network. read full story / add a comment

Element Six/De Beers’ plan to shut their Shannon plant, sacking 370 workers, and move production elsewhere is a disgusting stab in the back of the workers whose hard work has made them billions in profits over the years.

After huge sacrifices, including working part time on the promise that this would save jobs, the company now want to pack up and jump ship, with only a pittance of a redundancy. The entire cost of the redundancy scheme to the company is only €6.6m, about one week’s turnover for the factory, according to the Irish Independent!

Note: This article was written before management started discussing an "alternative" proposal saving "some" jobs, probably only a stay of execution, and demanding much reduced wages and terms and conditions. Therefore, the need for a fight still very much stands. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday July 29th the HSE were presented with 5,000 signatures on petitions demanding the maintaining of A&E services in Ennis, Nenagh and St.John’s Hospitals. The Socialist Party, who collected the petitions, claim that this is only the beginning and that an active campaign must be built. Socialist Party spokesperson, Cian Prendiville said: “The HSE are unlikely to give up on their agenda of centralisation and cutbacks without a fight. Petitions can be a first step, but what is needed is for people to come along to the upcoming health forum on July 29th and use it as a launching pad for a local action group.” read full story / add a comment

April 7th to 13th is Latin America Week – a week full of opportunities to learn about, discuss and experience different elements of Latin American culture, history and politics. As well as all this UL Socialist Youth are hosting a public talk on the Monday with Enrique Galan, a Colombian activist, and Dave Convery, an Irish socialist just back from 6 months in Latin America. For the last few weeks new dialysis patients in Limerick have had to travel all the way to Kilkenny, Tullamore, Trallee and Galway in order to get treated. This involves a two hour drive there and another two hours back at least 3 times a week.

On Saturday the 21st of July there will be a debate in Limerick between Socialist Youth and the Young PDs. A key part of that debate will be the ongoing health crisis nationally, the dialysis crisis here in Limerick and the governments ‘co-location’ and privatisation plans. read full story / add a comment
