The Bord Pleannala oral hearing saga continued today in Bellmullet at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, looking at the Compulsory Acquisition Orders of the present project application of the Shell Corrib Gas proposed estuary pipeline route, as well as various other aspects of the project. The various concerns raised by local objectors and the Rossport Solidarity Camp were not appeased by Shell's experts, and the question of whether the project was in 'the public interest' was once again raised by Mr Leo Mulrooney, Barrister for local land owners. read full story / add a comment

Local residents gathered at the Shell office in Belmullet early Monday morning to serve a Compulsory Acquisition Order (CAO) on Shell’s property and to prevent Shell workers from entering the building. read full story / add a comment

Last Wednesday protesters disrupted Shell's work as they moved one of their hideous drilling rigs into a shallow part of the SAC estuary, close to the Rossport solidarity camp. Protesters used kayaks to get to the rig which was flanked by fourteen boats of I-RMS security and Gardai. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday lunchtime, nine kayakers from Rossport Solidarity Camp, with their team of volunteers and local campaigners in support roles on dry land, successfully interrupted Shell's borehole survey drilling programme in Sruth Fhada Conn for several hours yesterday. read full story / add a comment

Several times a day there is a mini convoy that shoots back and forth between Ballyglass and Rossport, and this traffic intensifies at knocking-off time in the evening. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday people from the local community of Pullathomas and Rossport and Solidarity campers lead by the rousing sound of a visiting bagpiper and drummer, returned to one of Shell's drilling rigs, gaining access at low tide across the exposed sand bars of Sruwaddacon bay. On arriving at the rig a number of people surrounded the drill casing and danced around it before forming a tight huddle to prevent any further work occurring. Meanwhile others held a large banner and occupied the area while children played in the sand. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday morning forty people from around Sruwaddacon Estuary brought Shell’s survey work in the area to a complete standstill. The community walked out onto the mudflats at low tide to assert their cockle-picking rights and disrupt Shell’s borehole drilling survey. At around 11.30am people converged at Aughoose and walked down a public right of way onto the mudflats. The group walked to one of the two jack-up barges and prevented drilling by walking underneath the platform. IRMS - Shell’s private security firm – tried to block their free passage but the people prevailed and walked where they pleased. Three people scaled the legs of the barge and occupied them for about four hours. One person chained himself to the one of the drill-shafts in order to stop the work. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday at about 2.30pm Shell began to lower "Jack - 1" - one of two survey barges currently in Sruth Fhada Chonn estuary SAC (Special Area of Protection) - in order to tug it to another part of the estuary. The Rossport Solidarity Camp was ready and willing to claim free passage of the public estuary and in the process upset the operation. Over a dozen Shell security boats and two Garda RIBS couldn't keep the 6 kaykers out, with two of them reaching the moving barge after an hour and a half of chase. read full story / add a comment

This morning 11 people from Rossport Solidarity Camp waded and kayaked out from the camp to again delay Shell’s survey work in Sruwaddacon Estuary. Overall drilling work was stopped for over 5 hours, with one person climbing up one of the legs of the drilling platforms. Several people also attached themselves to the 2 outer drilling poles which are under the platforms. read full story / add a comment

On Wed 28th July a delegation of residents handed in their objections to An Bord Pleanála and Eamon Ryan regarding Shell's latest plan to put a raw gas pipeline close to homes and through the Special Protected Area (SPA) of Sruwaddacon estuary. read full story / add a comment

Gormley was quite happy to not grant a foreshore licence for the Poolbeg incinerator in his own constituency, but seems set to allow Shell to put the health and safety of the community in Erris at risk and destroy a Special Area of Conservation. If Gormley is seeking to renegotiate on Poolbeg and withhold the granting of a foreshore licence, why can't he do the same with Shell? read full story / add a comment

10 people from the Rossport solidarity camp delayed Shell’s survey work for the dangerous and experimental Corrib gas pipeline yesterday. The campaigners waded out to one of the rigs drilling boreholes in the Sruwaddacon estuarythe rig at high tide, fixed rope around the legs of the rig, and occupied the space underneath it to prevent the being moved to a new site. Beat the Boreholes continued yesterday with a walk on the strands of the estuary in the evening and leisurely paddle out earlier in the afternoon. Members of the local community walked close to the drilling barges at low tide and showed their opposition to Shell's willingness to destroy Sruwaddacon estuary. The estuary is not only a Special Area of Conservation and Special Protected Area – it has been an integral part of live in the community for generations. Despite this Minister Gormley has given the go-ahead for Shell to damage it. read full story / add a comment |
