Together with Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Karen Fallon and Damien Moran, Ciaron is one of the group known as the Pit Stop Ploughshares. In early February 2003, these five took part in the non-violent disarmament of a US Navy War Plane at shannon airport. They have been charged with US$2.5 million damage to the plane, which was forced to return to Texas rather than continue its journey to Iraq. Their trial begins on Monday Oct 24th 2005 at the Four Courts, Dublin, Ireland. While planespotting OUTSIDE shannon Warport in broad daylight last Sunday, some planespotters found themselves on the receiving end of a fit of madness from one of the APOs who decided somehow that he had jurisdiction outside his patch. On 3rd February 2003, as part of ongoing resistance at shannon Airport, the Pitstop Ploughshares disarmed a US warplane. Within the month, three of the four companies contracted at the time to ferry US troops and weapons had left Ireland.

Peace activist Ed Horgan (ex Irish Army Commandant) has been arrested at shannon Airport for taking a picture of a US Hercules aircraft. This picture was taken in a public area. It looks as though the Irish State will stoop to nothing in its desparation to hide the evidence of illegal US troop movements. A private jet similar to the ones chartered by the CIA for illegal transport of prisoners for the purposes of torture was also spotted by him. He was unable to confirm this because he was arrested.

They are demonstrating their solidarity with the widely popular cause of the Pitstop Ploughshares activists who are going on trial next week in an Irish court. The fifth World Social Forum (WSF) which took place last week in Porto Alegre, Brazil was a vital event for all those who are concerned with the state of the world. The WSF showed clearly that five years on from the Seattle protests, the ‘alter-globalisation’ movement continues to grow in strength and importance. 120,000 registered for the forum, almost 200,000 took part in the opening march and three hundred and fifty two proposals and calls for action came out of the more than 2000 panels and workshops that took place. read full story / add a comment |
