Over 100 separate local demonstrations took place today (Sat Nov 1st) against the Water Charges and for the Right 2 Water. Organisers estimate conservatively that over 150,000 were out on the streets today to send a message to this government that they won't accept paying for water twice and having it privatised later. People realize that all the false promises and allowances will eventually be dropped and the long term result will be that a privatised water company will prey on the people with massive hikes in charges and big fat bonuses for themselves. There were protests from Cork & Kerry to Wexford to Dublin to Limerick to Galway to Sligo to Donegal to Cavan to Dundalk and all over the Midlands. There has never been anything like it perhaps since the foundation of the state. The people are truly fed up and are determined and will not be abused by the political technocrats of big Capital that is robbing every social gain our forebears fought hard to get over the past century. read full story / add a comment

The anti-water charges campaign is a populist campaign driven by the opportunist politics of the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and other organisations including the UNITE trade union. The Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party merely view the campaign as a means to enhance their popularity within the working class while opportunistically impeding the development of communist consciousness among the working class. read full story / add a comment

Smothered Greyhounds found dead.- U bet-They die. The Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR) wholeheartedly condemns the suffering inflicted on the eleven greyhounds found smothered on Monday on exiting the Irish ferries vessel in France. As this news comes in the midst of a greyhound Racing crisis in Ireland we hope firstly that no more Greyhounds will suffer at the hands of the Greyhound Industry. read full story / add a comment

The Dublin Suicide Prevention Project (DSPP) is an education and learning initiative which is being established to develop suicide prevention within communities and equip residents with the knowledge to refer at risk people to reach professional services. Five years ago, the Irish Anarchist Review replaced Red and Black Revolution as the magazine of the Workers Solidarity Movement. It’s mission was to fill a vacuum in Irish radical circles, to be a publication that raised questions and provoked debate, rather than laying out blueprints for success, as had been the norm in the more theoretical work of the left. It was established at a time where a fightback was believed to be imminent, when the expectation was that as the (economic) beatings continued, morale would improve. read full story / add a comment

Sinn Fein I believe are rightly under attack for the issues around the Cahill case and the way they are said to have handled this. Abuse of women (and Men) exists in the revolutionary left also. When this comes up the leadership of these organizations usually try to cover this up by citing the supposed interests of the organization concerned and the revolution. This puts enormous pressure of the victims of assault and has to be condemned. read full story / add a comment

Single issue demands such as the movement against water rates hold back the class struggle by suggesting that capitalism can continue in the absence of these charges or taxes. This is because such demands are not embedded in a programme of an interlinked series of demands that challenges the capitalist system. read full story / add a comment

The Judicial Review of the Minister of Justice’s refusal to grant Michael McKevitt enhanced remission was scheduled to commence this morning in Court 4 of the High Court. However, upon arrival at court McKevitt’s legal team was informed that his case was being removed from the immediate hearing list and being placed instead on the Administration List – with a new date yet to be scheduled. Michael McKevitt’s legal team protested that today’s date had been scheduled by a High Court judge before the summer break; that the case concerned the potential unlawful detention of a prisoner and a citizen’s deprivation of liberty, and that the case should be given priority and should commence as previously scheduled. read full story / add a comment

The rhetoric by the Sinn Fein, the Anti Austerity Alliance and the People Before Profit Alliance featuring on RTE's Prime Time programme amounts to nothing but illusion. Their election candidates showed no understanding of the need for revolution. Their rhetoric suggested that capitalism can be managed or reformed to the benefit of the working class by effectively taxing the rich and not the working class. Indeed the entire show confined itself to suggestions as to how to reform capitalism in one way or another. In that way the participants sought to effectively defend the capitalist system. Essentially all contributors were essentially advocating bourgeois politics. If the Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party were genuinely revolutionary they would have challenged RTE and its other contributors by advocating the need for revolution. read full story / add a comment |
