The victims of Abu Ghraib torture sued, in a US court, the private company, CACI, hired to do the torturing. They lost. Brazenly CACI counter sued the victims in the same court and WON. The Abu Ghraib victims now have to pay their torturers 14,000 dollars in costs. Ridiculous! read full story / add a comment

Cuba Support Group Ireland is pleased to announce the dates and venues of a nationwide speaking tour by Canadian academic and author, Keith Bolender, a world expert on the blockade of Cuba. His talk will be based on his latest book, Cuba Under Siege: American Policy, the Revolution and Its People. In it, Bolender explores how Cuban society has been affected by 50 years of ‘non stop hostility from the world’s most powerful nation’. He offers extensive historical analysis, firsthand interviews and expert comment. Most significantly, perhaps, Bolender puts the blockade of Cuba into the historical military context of the tactic of siege and analyses the psychological impacts of this on the besieged population, with some remarkable insights from historical parallels. Through this contextualisation, the potential of American policy to deliver its stated intentions is evaluated with uncomfortable conclusions for policy makers. read full story / add a comment

Submission to the White Paper on Defence Government should be tried under Nuremberg Charter.
We are a collective of women; some of us very elderly. Some of us directly experienced wars; some of us have spent time in jail opposing war; the build up to war. We have buried our dead because of war. We have looked after and cared for those physically and psychologically damaged by war. We have experienced domestic violence by men, who have been traumatized by their time in war. We have suffered through the growth of the armed industry and the cost of filling the coffers or the armament industry merchants; the rough the devastation of the social services of our country. This is not only in our Country; this is worldwide read full story / add a comment

Joan burton minister for social protection has set up what has been called a new carrot and stick approach to the unemployed masses of ireland. The carrot is not suffficient ,and either is the stick for that matter, the carrot being jobbridge, and the stick being that social welfare can withhold your welfare for up to 63 days, and having the powers to reduce your social welfare payment..As far as i can see there is no new thinking on how to approach those who have lost their jobs,or are not adequately qualified or experienced to take up jobs.. Jobridge has been uncovered as a scam,to bolster up employers staff without expense, and can re-hire more job bridge workers as they please.Where is the incentive to employ people, take on paid work when job bridge is in the way of that. What employer is going to pay people to work when job bridge is for free? It is clear the government have not thought this through properly for whatever reason. Below is an article on this issue by Tom Boland. read full story / add a comment |
