Harris announced on 13 January that he, like the Sunday Independent paper edited by Anne (formerly Mrs) Harris, has been ‘silent’ on loyalist flag riots in the North of Ireland. The riots started out as an attack on the moderate unionist Alliance Party. Alliance brokered a compromise on Belfast City Council that permitted flying the Union Jack flag on 18 ‘designated’ days per year. The SDLP and Sinn Fein plan had been for either a shared no-flag space in the council or for parity of esteem by flying the Irish Tricolour with the Union Jack. Unionists don't do compromise. The DUP and UUP, egged on by the unionist Newsletter, put out 40,000 leaflets attacking Alliance MP Naomi Long and her party generally. Long took DUP leader Peter Robinson’s seat at the last British general election. A sore point. read full story / add a comment

Abortion Rights Campaign established in Dublin today, 19/01/20130 At a national pro-choice meeting in Dublin today, the name and aims of the newly established Abortion Rights Campaign were announced. Groups and individuals from across the country, including Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Belfast came together to discuss and agree the next steps for the movement. The aims of the campaign include legislation on the X & C cases and repeal of the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution. Actions and events are being organised across the country over the coming months. Speakers at the event included Clare Daly TD who said, “The Abortion Rights Campaign is not a sprint, it's a marathon and we're here for the long haul. In the meantime, we want the immediate introduction of legislation for the right to safe, legal abortion when a woman's life is at risk, including from suicide. We also want the simplest, broadest legislation that includes the right to abortion in the case of fatal foetal abnormality. We will keep the pressure on until we get this." read full story / add a comment

An insight into prison life in Ireland, namely Castlerea Prison, Co Roscommon. On 21st April 2010 I was convicted of assaulting a number of Gardaí in relation to Shell to Sea protests and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. Remission for good behaviour means that prisoners will have their sentences reduced by a quarter, once you keep your nose clean. I was given credit for 2 weeks time served previously in 2009, before I was bailed out pending my appeal. So I spent 4 months in jail from April to August in the summer of 2010. read full story / add a comment

Still enough time for FOI – if House leadership supports it. With only nine session days remaining before Congress adjourns for a long election break, members of the Right to Know Right Now Coalition are reminding members of Congress that they still have enough time to pass the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill even without the prodding of Malacanang. read full story / add a comment

The latest loyalist sectarian attack on the people of the Short Strand illustrates the unchanging reality of life for large sections nationalist community in Belfast and throughout occupied Six Counties. Once again it is the nationalist people who must bear the brunt of loyalist mobs who have unleashed in order to further the political agenda of the unionist political establishment. read full story / add a comment

The Association of Hunt Saboteurs will be holding a lively demonstration outside Dail Eireann on 1st February to coincide with the start of the ICC coursing Final in Powerstown Park Clonmel. We will have some Dail members present and will be again highlighting the upcoming Private members bill to ban coursing being brought before the Dail by TDs Clare daly and Maureen O Sullivan. Hare Coursing is a melting pot of many ills that need to be extinguished. Focus on indoctrinating children. A focus of this year’s final seems to be the influx of children expected at Clonmel’s Powerstown Park. • A Greyhound supporters forum GREYHOUND NUTS is discussing the fact that lots of school children will attend this event read full story / add a comment

Dublin 1913 to Dublin 2013 What have we learned? What changes can be made? Dublin 1913: It was before World War I, Ireland had negotiated a form of Home Rule/self government but there was inequality with extremes in wealth and poverty, nationalism and British Rule created the environment for dissent and rebellion. James Larkin "Big Jim" represented the low skilled workers and William Martin Murphy, a Catholic businessman represented the newly forming middle class. William Martin Murphy owned the Irish Independent newspaper, and the Dublin United Tramway Company and was making inroads against the power of the former elites. read full story / add a comment |
