How many times will U.S. elected Representatives of the U.S. House and Senate have to kiss Israel’s ass, and in how many ways, before “our” country will build a true national security team—that is one actually focused on U.S. security and not primarily on Israel’s? It is bad enough when Jewish-Americans politicians (with more substantive allegiance to Israel than the U.S.) like junior Senator Ben Cardin for Maryland, claiming his decision on whether Chuck Hagel will be a good Secretary of Defense resides on whether he is onboard with Israel’s/AIPAC’s agenda of having war with Israel’s enemy Iran (at least as backup force); or NY Senator Chuck Schumer equivocating about not “feeling” comfortable with voting for Hagel because of some of Hagel’s past attitudes; but even more so with suck-ups like Lindsey Graham giving about the best ass-kissing one could expect (to think some confederates once had some principle of pride and independence). read full story / add a comment

The government has published The Water Services Bill 2013 that gives it power to impose a Water Tax from Jan 1st 2014. The Bill has yet to go through the Dail for possible minor amendments. The Bill will handle our public water resources and infrastructure over to a private company that will be able to extract what essentially amounts to a form of rent for providing a basic need like water. The tax will cost at least €500+ a year although naturally the government has played down this figure. Initially the government will take the tax as revenue for themselves but eventually this gift will be handed over to private companies. read full story / add a comment

To whom it may concern: The list of manufacturers here are just some of the business's in the south of Ireland that are connected with the machinery of imperialist wars. Can we get a discussion going leading to a widespread, coordinated and effective campaign, with the goal of ending the manufacturing of any military components or devices in Ireland for war? The Cherry Picking of the Mainstream Media This story shows once again the sickening results of the abuse of the word freedom. The American and British public should hear about this. How does this rank alongside the story of the young Pakistani campaigner, Malala Yousafzai? It's a sickening outrage and a disgrace. "On Sunday night (Jan. 6th), 18 month old Saiyma Gadazai froze to death in the Kabul refugee camp where she was born. Her father told how they fled the war in the South. He held both NATO and the Taliban in equal contempt. She was laid to rest next to a 3 year old boy called Janaan who died in the same camp 13 days ago. Also from exposure. This country has been under the control of the richest nations on earth for over 10 years. For children to be dying like this in its capital city is utterly obscene. In Brazil we have a history of abuse and arbitrariness: from the most vile censorship, like that practiced during the "military dictatorship*", even dishonest and virulent attacks carried out by sectors of the press, against institutions, citizens and even banks. It is controversial the relationship between freedom of expression and the degree of development of societies. Many seek to justify the repressive character of the current regimes as a price that must be paid for achieving progress. Throughout history, however, people fought and died for the right to speak, to question, to publish. It is no coincidence that in many countries today, people debate legislation on the subject. This is the case of our neighboring republic, Argentina, to name just one instance. read full story / add a comment

Although we did not ultimately stop US military use of the airport, through Indymedia reporting, documentaries, the massive demos, sit-ins, die-ins, walks, vigils, and the highs and lows of years of several court cases, all helped to focus intensive national and international attention on the Government’s policy of allowing such transits through neutral airspace. read full story / add a comment

Fears are growing in Dublin, that the British will again bomb the city, under the cover of loyalism, as Belfast loyalists are threatening to come south, after a third night of loyalist rioting in Belfast, with gunshots being fired in east Belfast yesterday. Three nights of rioting by the paramilitary UVF, escalated yesterday, with the help of British fascist from England. Civilian deaths have risen by 28% in Afghanistan, In Yemen and Pakistan Drone attacks increase, not just Al Qaeda and Taliban die, many civilians perish in these far from surgical strikes. Ironically the miltants killed by the US in Pakistan, Yemen and Afghanistan hold the exact same beliefs as the Jihadists backed by the US in Syria, Egypt and across North Africa. Even more bizarrely the US arm Jihadists in Iranian Baluchistan while they fight another branch of the same organisation in Pakistani Baluchistan! Did it ever cross the minds of the CIA that weapons supplied in Iran work just as well in Pakistan? In the US, Obama has signed into law the bill which continues the operation of the Guantanamo Bay prison camp and allows for indefinite Military internment without charge for US citizens. Time for the good news: The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has awarded damages to a CIA torture victim who was subject to extraordinary rendition. read full story / add a comment

The political internment of Marian Price, is a clear a breach of Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights and of Article 5 of the Convention. The Convention protects the individual from being subject to torture including inhuman and degrading treatment Article 3 and also the right to liberty and security of the person Article 5. Those in detention are also protected by the United Nations Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and in by common law doctrines and the rules of natural justice as developed the domestic courts read full story / add a comment |
