Eoghan Harris destroyed Gay Mitchell's campaign by advising him to launch a reactionary blueshirt assault on Martin McGuinness. See:

Gay Blueshirt Mitchell becomes Eoghan Harris's candidate
http://www.indymedia.ie/article/100648

Never a man to allow sentiment to delay him, Harris switched at the last minute to the one reactionary he thought would win, Sean Gallagher. Just like in 1997 when 'tribal time bomb' Mary McAleese won, the Harris touch turned to dust.

Higgins will win and Martin McGuinness will elect him on transfers - the worst of all Harris worlds. Higgins lifted Section 31 censorship restrictions on Sinn Fein in 1994 and paved the way for the peace process and Sinn Fein electoral advance. Harris hated all of that. read full story / add a comment

Reformists clash with the revolutionaries for years on the methods of struggle against capitalism. The first group is criticized for its strategy of building a new society step by step. Revolutionaries say that it will never happen because real liberation requires radical action and confrontation with the enemy. But reformists say that revolutionary methods are based on short-term changes that lead to violence and it is never possible to predict the outcome of the revolution. read full story / add a comment

international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Thursday October 27, 2011 11:42 by Maryam Namazie
76 secularists and human rights campaigners, including Mina Ahadi, Nawal El Sadaawi, Marieme Helie Lucas, Hameeda Hussein, Ayesha Imam, Maryam Jamil, Maryam Namazie, Taslima Nasrin, Farida Shaheed, Fatou Sow, and Stasa Zajovic have signed on to a Manifesto for a Free and Secular Middle East and North Africa.

In light of the recent pronouncements of the unelected Libyan Transitional Council for ‘Sharia laws’, the signatories of the manifesto vehemently oppose the hijacking of the protests by Islamism or US-led militarism and unequivocally support the call for freedom and secularism made by citizens and particularly women in the region.

Secularism is a minimum precondition for a free and secular Middle East and for the recognition of women’s rights and equality. read full story / add a comment

"it shall be for the house (Dail and Senate) to determine the appropriate balance between the rights of persons and the public interest..." Okay this is pretty basic - A referendum is needed every time a government wishes to change our constitution - this is because the constitution theoretically exists to protect people from the excesses of any government i.e. any elected government can only work within the confines of what the constitution sets out. This means the constitution belongs to the citizens (i.e. us) not the Government. Whatever government is in power has to get our permission to change it. Lots of things in our constitution are outdated and need to be changed BUT and it's a big BUT we should be really careful of letting it be changed for trivial issues. read full story / add a comment

The People's Association Watchdog recently sent a letter to all TDs with a proposal regarding mortgage debt solutions, to our dismay one of the replies received was from Minister Howlin's Office to say "As this is a matter for the Mr. Michael Noonan T.D., Minister for Finance your email has been forwarded onto his Department for attention and direct reply." Has Minister Howlin forgotten the Keane report already? He is minister for Public Expenditure and Equality and his department had the 2nd highest amount of participants in the Keane report. It would appear that Minister Howlin is doing a Pontius Pilate and washing his hands of all the distressed mortgage holders that are being sacrificed at the behest of his banking masters. read full story / add a comment

According to Enda Kenny, the Irish people are dumb, maleable and stupid. When asking people to support a referendum vote on something as important as changing the Irish Consitution, it is simply not enough to say “This is about fairness” and hope as he obviously does that people will simply sit back in satisfaction and accept his words. read full story / add a comment
