Until recently, Irish religion has been seen as defined by Catholic power in the South and sectarianism in the North. In recent years, however, both have been shaken by widespread changes in religious practice and belief, the rise of new religious movements, the revival of magical-devotionalism, the arrival of migrant religion and the spread of New Age and alternative spirituality. As recently as 2007 Ireland was being described as “one of the two remaining ‘blind spots’ for the study of religions in Europe”, (Ireland's New Religious Movements 2011 - see the link below) Now the details of a new MA course on Contemporary Religions have been announced by the Department for the Study of Religion in University College Cork. read full story / add a comment

SIPTU have produced a short video for YouTube as part of their community campaign in the north. Introducing a new cultural website. After the death of England’s best-loved alcoholic gambling bigot, the queen mother, the Daily Mail rather ludicrously suggested that the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square should be given over permanently to a statue of her. The Guardian impishly proposed the potential responses of contemporary artists to the challenge. For Antony Gormley, we got ‘the angel of the south’: a steel sculpture of an old lady, complete with cane, handbag, absurd hat and enormous aeroplane wings. This is how one pictures the angel of contemporary culture. Her eyes stare at hordes of tourists, bemused consumers of Britain’s heritage industry. Her existence is a cheap trick, a grandiose prosthesis grafted onto a piece of idiotic kitsch. Nobody any more is quite sure if she is a serious endeavour or a mischievous joke; the work of a dedicated artisan or of an industry. Unlike Benjamin’s angel,* she does not want to stay behind but to take flight from this shabby existence. Unfortunately, she is riveted to the plinth. 'Fracking' is a term that not everyone may be aware of. It is used to describe a method of shale gas extraction known as Hydraulic Fracturing. Unfortunately it is a term we are very likely to hear a lot more about in the coming months and years. read full story / add a comment

The M15 peaceful revolutionary movement in Spain has had profound success and has grown and still is growing. It has inspired similar things to happen in further afield, as Bob Dylan sang "The times they are a changin". Yesterday we saw on the streets of Barcelona, the second sinsister move by the Catalan state / region, the first being the well publicised extreme violent action by the Mossos (Catalan police) on M27. What we saw was the open use of "agents provocateurs" in an attempt to split the movement, discredit the movement, give fuel to those (politicians, media...) who wish to see this #SpanishRevolution come to a quick end. Well they have failed, their agents were caught on camera, watch the video, all is VERY VERY clear - Who are they real violent ones in this situation. M15 movement remains peaceful. On May 23, 2011, the Israeli Special Ministry of Welfare and Social Affairs Task Force on minority religious groups presented a 48-page report to the Minister of Welfare. The Report has been described as being "a blueprint for systematic, government-fuelled intolerance directed at minority religious communities throughout Israel". read full story / add a comment

The socialist republican party éirígí have described the latest proposals by the Health Service Executive (HSE) to slash essential services at a number of hospitals in the HSE west region as "appalling" and "totally unnecessary". It is central tenet of any adversarial system that a defendant has the right to challenge any fact alleged against him. The right to mount such a challenge must be exercised in a way that is meaningful. At the heart of the common law system is the right to confront ones accusers and challenge them by way of cross examination as outlined by Judge Orie at the International Criminal Court in Le Hague in June 2011. This right had been set at nought in the Omagh civil case and resulted in the second miscarriage of justice against Michael McKevitt. read full story / add a comment

Today marks three months since the Dublin Food Co-op received a complaint of ‘physical assault and violent aggression’ on the premises. Rachel Peavoy was a 30 year old mother of two young boys. On Jan 11 2010 Rachel froze to death in her home which she had pleaded with her landlords Dublin City Council to be moved for 3 years without success. Her living conditions were of inhumane standards. She was isolated in a derelict block of flats with major anti social and drug dealing problems and also major maintenance problems. We want answers to why she was left to die in such conditions by Ireland's biggest landlord Dublin City Council. Many more still live in such conditions and this should never be allowed happen again.
