The environmental group Friends of the Irish Environment have written to the Minister for the Environment calling for prosecutions to follow the recent complete levelling of two listed ringforts by a farmer in County Cork. The ringforts were located in the townland of Knockacareagh, near Killmurray in north Cork. The farm was auctioned on 24 June, 2010. The new owner obliterated the ring forts, which were marked on maps and included in a photograph on the auctioneer's website, within a week of taking possession. read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Publication. Iran stoning case, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is at imminent risk of execution in Tabriz prison. Moreover, her well known human rights lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei, is in prison in Turkey after having fled the country to evade arrest for his advocacy work. His wife remains in prison in Iran – held hostage – until he is remanded into the regime’s custody (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1652). Given Turkey’s close relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mostafaei can face deportation back to Iran even though he has applied for refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees there. Campaigners are concerned about the safety of Mostafaei and his wife. We are also extremely concerned for Ashtiani’s life. The regime may be preparing to execute her within the next few days, particularly given that the Tabriz prosecutor has demanded her execution and is awaiting the Tehran high court’s confirmation (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1665). read full story / add a comment

Palestinian and Latin American rights campaigners in Ireland have reacted strongly to the appointment of outgoing Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Velez to one of two United Nations commissions set up to inquire into the Mavi Marmara massacre on May 31 in international waters while they approached the besieged Gaza Strip. read full story / add a comment

As news that Ireland's unemployment rate continues to rise sinks in, 20 young people from across Ireland are gathering in Galway this weekend to prepare their effort in bringing about much needed change. The SpunOut.ie Academy of Activism, supported by the Huston Film School at NUIG, is a free training course for young people of different backgrounds who are passionate about making a difference in the world around them. There has been much in the news media of late regarding political prisoners in Cuba. You hear little of Cuban political prisoners in US Jails. Take the case of Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Miami Five imprisoned in the US for fighting terrorism. Gerardo is suffering under another punishment from the US government. Since July 21, Gerardo has been held in the ‘hole’ - a windowless cell of 7x3 feet which he shares with another prisoner, with little ventilation and reaching temperatures of 95 degrees. He is unable to take a shower and is taken outside in a cage for just one hour every other day. read full story / add a comment |
