mayo / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Saturday May 08, 2010 22:00 by Shell to Sea   image 3 images
A Shell to Sea protest took place this afternoon at the 'North-West Development Forum', held in Belmullet Co Mayo. While previous protests have highlighted that the narrow terms of reference of the forum exclude real debate on the Corrib Gas Project, today’s message was one of solidarity with imprisoned campaigners Pat O’Donnell and Niall Harnett. This was the first such forum since An Bord Pleanála deemed that over half of Shell’s proposed Corrib Gas Pipeline was unacceptable on health and safety grounds in February. read full story / add a comment

A large number of Palestine solidarity activists and supporters gathered at the Spire on O'Connell Street in Dublin today to remember the children of Palestine who were killed and injured since the Nakba began in 1948. Children's shoes were laid symbolically on the ground in front of an evocative memorial banner featuring the handprints of children.

The event was organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) and the first in its programme of Nakba Week events (see links on front page of indymedia for further details or go to www.ipsc.ie). read full story / add a comment

international / worker & community struggles and protests / opinion/analysis Friday May 07, 2010 17:13 by Speaker Aileen; Editing Andrew   image 1 image   audio 1 audio file
In this audio recording Aileen O'Carroll draw on the stories and diaries of those working in IT company’s to talk about the secrets and contradictions of working in a global industry. The myth is that IT workers happily work a 60 hour week but like workplaces of a previous era, there is a struggle over the nature of work and the length of working time within our lives. The left tends to focus on the formal visible struggles conducted through trade unions. What can this other level of often individualised struggle teach us in the fight for a new world? read full story / add a comment

New York, NY, May 5, 2010 – More than 50 organizations and artists from eight countries have written to legendary political singer and poet Gil Scott-Heron to thank him for his decision to drop Israel from his current tour. Together with over 300 cities from around the world, Legalise Cannabis Ireland are proud to announce that the fourth annual Legalise Cannabis Day is to take place in both Dublin and Cork this Saturday the 8th of May. Through experience in this anonymous subculture we have repeatedly found that the vast majority of cannabis users in Ireland can consume cannabis responsibly. These are typically decent and similarly unharmful people who should be able to consume cannabis without being criminalised or having fear of oppression for doing so. Due to the nature of prohibition, our culture is largely unfarmiliar in the general public's eye. Despite this, we will march in protest of the criminalisation of cannabis users and we call for full utilisation of the cannabis plant for its medical, industrial, recreational and agricultural values. read full story / add a comment

On the 21st April in Ballina Circuit Court, Shell to Sea campaigner Niall Harnett was sentenced to 6 months in jail, for an assault on Garda Hugh Egan on Glengad beach. Defence barrister Leo Mulrooney summed it up, without correction from the judge, that the incident was “as close to a technical offence as possible”. Essentially Niall Harnett was found guilty of assault of a Garda for putting his hand on Garda Egan while Garda Egan was pulling out of a fellow protestor (myself), whose leg was caught on Shell’s illegally constructed fencing.
At a previous appeal sitting of the Circuit Court, Mr Harnett had been given 240 hours community service in lieu of the 6 month jail sentence, however he refused to do the community service, and so received the 6 months. read full story / add a comment

Palestine Dominates CRH AGM at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire
Today, Wednesday 5th May, a large number of Palestine solidarity activists staged a demonstration outside the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Irish multinational CRH, while concerned shareholders inside asked serious and pointed questions about the role of the Irish cement company in supplying construction materials being used in the building of Israel’s apartheid Separation Wall and in illegal settlements in Palestine.

CRH has a 25% stake in the Israeli Mashav group, which acts as a holding company for Israel’s sole cement producer, Nesher.

As once again Cork's mainstream trade unions declined to publicly celebrate the everlasting memorial day to working peoples' struggles worldwide, it falls to Solidarity Books/Workers Solidarity Movement Cork Branch and the Independent Workers Union to mark this most important of days. A day of public talks and a community meal was organised by the local branch of the WSM at Solidarity Books, which complemented excellently the annual May Day march through the city streets this evening organised as usual by the Independent Workers Union. read full story / add a comment

Farmers claim in a debate with environmentalists that they must burn their lands or lose grants that require them to maintain their farmlands for grazing animals. They also blame the Government for requiring them since 2000 to burn before March 1 rather than the April 15, claiming that wet conditions have meant a build up of wildfire fuel is now a 'tragedy waiting to happen'. read full story / add a comment
