In a period of mass unemployment in 1920's Germany fascism came to power despite not only the presence of mass Communist and Social Democratic parties but also of significant anti-fascist street fighting. Why did the left fail and what was the attraction of fascism. What about fascist movements today, do they represent a similar threat? Can we even agree a single definition of what fascism is? read full story / add a comment

While many view these days with dread; the outset of climate crisis, political corruption and corporate manipulation blocking healthy change, lack of hope that things can change.

Others are starting to see something profound emerging; a re-awakening, an eruption of activity, new and intelligent ways of human interaction. Ecologist Paul Hawken sees this phenoman as "the immune system of humanity finally kicking in" and calls it Blessed Unrest.

As another bubble in all this, yesterday saw the first of 25 days of the first "Global Eco Forum"... read full story / add a comment

Misrepresenting Animal Rights: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Although Irish organisations and individuals have sought to care for nonhuman animals for many years, animal rights advocacy ~informed by rights-based theory~ is a very recent development in Ireland. Ciaron O'Reilly discusses all your hardware needs in this three minute rough cut from a forthcoming film on activism in Ireland.

Hammers, mattocks and other pieces of equipment are all weighed up by this seasoned activist. A shears (or even a scissors) does not make it out of the bag, so perhaps the film will act as a timely reminder of the need to raise funds for anti-war causes (in ways other than sponsored haircuts). read full story / add a comment

At this stage its unsurprising in the least to read Royal Dutch Shell propoganda being presented as "journalism" by the Irish Independent and its stable mate, the Sunday Indo. Most readers of this site will be only too aware that the paper's owner 'Sir' Tony O Reilly has a very practical and profitable interest in the vast amounts of oil and gas of the West coast of Ireland.

However even by the hack standards of journalism, and right wing opinions, that grace the paper, yesterdays piece by Maeve Sheehan suggest not just the usual biased and unnuaced 'presentation of facts' but has an almost willful ignorance of the facts on the ground. Combined with a willingness to present Shell and Police PR without any simple background checks or colloratory evidence over such an 'extensive' (read: its got a big word count) this article would be most useful for any who sought a practical example of what Noam Chomsky describes as the 'manufacturing of consent' read full story / add a comment

Harold H. Thompson is an anarchist prisoner serving life plus sentences in Tennessee, USA after a series of farcical trials.

Harold is well known for his work as a 'jailhouse lawyer' and copes with prison by fighting for his fellow prisoner in the courts for some semblance of real justice.

"I am an anti-authoritarian, anti-racist, anti-sexist, anarchist revolutionary of proud Irish heritage. I am also a vegetarian and strongly support the animal liberation movement. I stand for civil/human rights and will not break, bend nor be intimidated. I stand in solidarity with all people struggling against oppression but most particularly with my brothers and sisters in the anarchist movement".
