A large group of people showed their solidarity with Shell to Sea hunger striker Maura Harrington and all those who are being arrested, detained, assaulted and otherwise attacked by the state for standing up to Shell. The protest in Dublin city centre this evening, was attended by activists from a wide range of backgrounds and party affiliations, and as well as showing support for the fight against Shell, was an opportunity to spread the word about the shameful giveaway of the country's natural resources. Over a thousand leaflets were given out as protesters mingled with the evening shoppers on Dublin's main street. read full story / add a comment

When the Irish constitution was unveiled in 1937 it set out a special place for women within the home. In Ireland as elsewhere ‘women’s life within the home’ has to a large extent been characterized by long hours of thankless drudgery. While the struggles of Irish women for greater liberties during the last century have improved our lives in many ways, the drudgery of housework remains thankless and the workplace has not brought the liberation that certain feminists promised. As anarchists see it, this is because as long as we live in a capitalist society women (or men) can never be meaningfully liberated. read full story / add a comment

At the elaborately staged 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the North Korean Stalinist State, the "Dear Leader", Kim Jong IL was conspicious by his absence. It is believed that he may have suffered a stroke (Kim is alleged to enjoy cigars, booze and teenage girls while his devoted subjects make do eating grass). At the edge of 66, Kim, like 72 year old John McCain, is no spring chicken and the demise of his personal brand of socialism is sure to end relatively soon if the rumours of his ill-health are unfounded. read full story / add a comment

RTE and other media outlets are reporting that the Shell pipe laying ship is to leave Broadhaven Bay within 48 hours. Some journalists are speculating that the ship's captain has had a crisis of conscience and has left the area in response to the hunger strike, but Shell's statement claims the move is in response to damage to the ship's equipment. In situations like this, it is usual that false claims are made, and even deals are agreed to, purely to diffuse the situation. read full story / add a comment

How ironic that the Irish Greyhound Derby final falls at the end of Gambling Awareness week,( this week). How many Irish people realise that very young school-going children are freely allowed to bet their pocket money without any legislative protection at Ireland’s Greyhound tracks. Yes, Irelands TOTE BETTING has no under age limit, leaving kids as young as 4 or 5 years old reaching over the counter at places like Shelbourne Park Greyhound Track to gamble their pocket money away. read full story / add a comment

Remember the 3rd of September. That is the day the economic conservative consensus died, when all the certainties propagated by our one-party state were shredded. Fiona Fail has panicked in the face of rapid economic deterioration, brought forward the budget by a few weeks, and in that simple, technical act has unintentionally composed a dirge. No one day heralds the end of something as complex and layered as an economic cycle. But they can serve up symbols. September 3rd is such a symbol – of a coffin, and the Ministers polishing it. read full story / add a comment

A Danish military intelligence whistleblower has complained that the Danish prison service has been unfair in imprisoning him at a distance from his 15-year-old daughter. Frank Grevil has been imprisoned at Horserød Prison since June this year, as punishment for leaking documents which showed that the Danish Defence Intelligence Service did not share the government's conviction that Saddam Hussein's Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction at the time of Denmark's invasion of Iraq in March 2003. read full story / add a comment |
