For the past two weeks the focus of the Free Palestine Campaign group in Galway has been harvesting signatures for our petition calling on the EU (and the Irish government to work towards effecting it) to suspend or terminate the Euro-Med Agreement, which economically privileges Israel with access to the EU market, due to that country's gross and willful trampling of Palestinian human rights, International Law, Geneva Conventions and Part 2 of the Agreement . When it comes to Palestine, the moral rot of the EU in refusing to suspend the Agreement does'nt stop there, it's deep and pernicious and with the passing of the Lisbon Treaty will deleteriously effect and infect Palestine further?. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin activists protested outside Belfast City Hall this past weekend, to highlight the denial of democracy by Fianna Fáil and the Irish Government, in their desperate attempts to push through the Lisbon Treaty. The youth wing of Sinn Féin held a protest with street theatre, and distributed 1,000s of leaflets posing the question, "Why can't you vote in the Lisbon Treaty?"; in reference to the denial of Irish Citizens in the 6 counties from voting in the upcoming referendum. read full story / add a comment

GEORGE BUSH – NOT WANTED HERE We are appalled at the news that George Bush will visit Belfast next month. It is disgraceful that his visit is as a result of an invitation issued by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. This part of the world more than most places has an understanding of the deep damage and pain that war and conflict produces. George Bush is internationally regarded as a warmonger. The transformation of democratic rule of law into a law to support an EU-federalist oligarchy is however far from getting the whole picture of Europe’s current and projected political system. In this part we compare the main features of the political system of Ireland known as “parliamentary democracy” with the basic criteria of democracy identified by experts of political theory [11] by reconciling two complementary widely accepted democracy-indexes: of Polity and Freedom House. After matching the observations of the system in Ireland with the two essential features of parliamentary democracy, which fill the word “democracy” with its actual meaning - meaningful elections and political freedom -, we find that these are converging to a zero value in Ireland under the overwhelming pressure of Lisbon. During the current Lisbon referendum campaign, numerous politicians, business and think-tank leaders and spokespersons have repeatedly asserted that EU Member States, including Ireland, have a veto on whether or not the EU signs up to a WTO free-trade deal on agricultural goods. This is not true. An international free-trade agreement that consists exclusively of agricultural and other ‘manufactured’ goods, cannot be vetoed. It can only be decided on by a ‘qualified majority’ vote by the EU Council of Ministers. Additionally, the automatic veto on free-trade agreements in essential public services, which Member States currently enjoy, is removed under the proposed Lisbon treaty, reports Barry Finnegan.* read full story / add a comment

“Rodent and bird Glue traps are an extremely cruel method of killing animals. we believe that if people knew the degree of cruelty associated with these devices they would want no part of them. The are illegal under the wildlife act (approved traps, snares and nets) regulations 2003. However the sale or possession of these traps will have to be monitored to eradicate them completely. So far Atlantic,Swords and Murtaghs Co Meath , among other rural stores have removed them immediately when told by us that they were illegal.We appreciate their cooperation.-most are imported and they are also openly for sale still on the internet .AFAR members will be reporting all shops selling them . read full story / add a comment

One of the main conclusions of our former publication [1] have been that the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is in effect new elections in Ireland. The issue of the Lisbon referendum is of even higher relevance than parliamentary elections, because the decision on ratifying the Lisbon Treaty is not merely to elect temporary representatives into the next term of the government and the parliament, but - upon transferring the current powers of the nation state of Ireland to the federal state in Brussels – it is a decision on accepting or rejecting the permanent construction of a new federal government and parliament. Without publicising this fact the ongoing government campaign to promote a ‘yes’ vote on the referendum amounts to the deprivation of the voters of their most fundamental democratic right to meaningful elections. The present study offers further evidence for the above statements by revealing the general erosion of democracy in the countries targeted by the Lisbon process. read full story / add a comment

A miniature camera mounted on a small machine built to ride the track records a long, extreme close-up tracking shot of one of the rails as it enters, passes through, and leaves the town. If you were walking the streets of Paris this month 40 years ago, chances are you would be completely caught up and participating in a time that has since changed French society forever. Then, France was on the verge of a total revolt with 12 million workers on strike, 122 factories occupied, and millions of students fighting for a radical change in the way the world was working. A spark that boldly called for revolution and dreamed of an end to capitalism appeared to come out of nowhere. Its ripples sparked further questioning and action in other parts of the world including our own little island. Ultimately, Paris ’68 did not succeed, but that’s not to say that the spark has been fully quelled or, indeed, that it wont boldly appear again in what are still troubled times. read full story / add a comment

After a heated debate in the Dail the Government won the vote on the retention of Cancer services in the North-West.
