Enclosing the commons – the historical process of fencing off land which had previously been in the public domain, for private use – is perhaps one of the most blatant expressions of the fundamental criminal nature of the capitalist state. Today it's the voracious neo-liberal model which stalks the last pockets of community-held global territory for privatization - from Chiapas, Mexico, to the deep Amazon, to the Garifuna coast of Honduras, leaving no stone unturned. read full story / add a comment

antrim / worker & community struggles and protests / opinion/analysis Thursday April 03, 2008 12:04 by Defend Pat Lawlor
Pat Lawlor, Nursing Convenor at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast is currently 'under investigation' by the National Executive of UNISON. Pat's alleged 'crime' is that he spoke out in support of striking classroom assistants and for daring to criticise the actions of the leadership of UNISON. During the classroom assistants strike, Pat did what any decent trade unionist should have done - publicly supported workers on strike. The regional leadership of UNISON refused to do so. Their actions actually undermined the classroom assistants pay and conditions. Because Pat chose to express solidarity with workers in struggle, he now faces disciplinary action being taken against him. He may even be expelled from UNISON. read full story / add a comment

Statement regarding Dublin Zoo Orangutan escape. The Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR) is saddened by hearing of the Oranutan Maggie's bid to find freedom yesterday even to the point of leaving her baby ' The understandably frustrated animal has been confined in an enclosure for 24 years, more than the length of a sentence that would be imposed on a human for the crime of murder. Zoos are but Prisons to non human animals, yet they have not committed any crime. Those in captivity are driven insane, deprived of a natural life and are basically kept imprisoned for life so that our species can amuse themselves. read full story / add a comment

PIGS EXPLOITED FOR ENTERTANMENT WITH NAAS County Council SUPPORT. While Belfast, Cork and Fingal are to be admired for moving with the times by banning the use of animals in roadside shows, Naas on the other hand is showing its retrospect attitude by staging a Pot –bellied pig race in April. It is to coincide with Punchestown Horse Racing to keep the punters in Naas after the horse racing has ended. Its mostly being promoted by the Drinking establishments and restaurants in the town. Pigs are highly intelligent animals and do not deserve to be degraded, frightened or used as part of what is an event that is basically centered around club and pub participation, basically its a beer festival. Defenceless animals should not be part of this type of atmosphere. This also sends out a message to children that animals are mere toys to be used by humans. read full story / add a comment

In all the bustle of Dail ovations and political punditry on the resignation of Mr Ahern the other things that have happened today include the Publication of the White Paper on Lisbon. The EU is a power and the treaty will tighten up the 'drift' (whatever on earth that means) between EU parliament and citizen. It's got something to do with 'traction', which is the term used by Mr Roche. Mr Roche heads up the EU reform process in Ireland, but Dermott Ahern Provided the launch and Junket. read full story / add a comment
