With Richard away in Cratloe, Shane in Dunshaughlin, Tanya in, etc, etc ,for the duration of the Xmas period, Galway Shell to Sea could only muster two of its activists to do picket duty outside the Shell Westside Service Station this afternoon, nevertheless, there was no appreciable lack of feedback from the passing motorists and pedestrians with one woman marooned in the gridlocked traffic beckoning us over for a chat regarding Shell - its wings severely clipped yesterday by Putin and Gazprom in regards to the Sakhalin 2 project. read full story / add a comment

The Health and Safety Authority (http://www.hsa.ie) published new draft guidelines on the prevention and resolution of workplace bullying. Interested parties are invited to submit comments and observations to the Public Consultation Phase on the draft by the 16th of January 2007 before the guidelines become a Code of Practice with legal force. The new Code does not compel the assessment of bullying within Safety Statements, the production of monitoring information about workplace bullying episodes, transparent procedures or objective investigation of bullying complaints. No State authority is nominated with responsibility to enforce effective measures to reduce workplace bullying behaviour. As such it is a cosmetic measure that can be misused as a charter to bully. read full story / add a comment

A broad-based network of U.S.-based activists, grassroots organizations, and their allies are betting that this is a time when a U.S. Social Forum could be a vehicle for moving a social, environmental and economic justice agenda to center stage. The U.S. Social Forum planning effort grew out of a series of consultations held in 2003 between activists in the United States and members of the World Social Forum International Council. Grassroots Global Justice (GGJ), a national alliance of U.S.-based grassroots organizations, facilitated the process, including a 2004 meeting of 50 grassroots organizations in Washington, D.C. The 22 organizations spearheading the planning came of age in response to varying forms of community displacement resulting from the last 20-plus years of neoliberal economic policies. read full story / add a comment

It was a great night had by all, and more importantly a lot of money was raised (over 2000 euro) for the Prisoners dependents. Former INLA POW and member of the Ard Comhairle Gerard Forward from the Short Strand in Belfast gave the main speech. Gerard gave a well received rousing speech as well as a standing ovation. Soon afterwards a representatives of Dublin Brigade INLA read out a speech which included the condeming of those criminal elements (who are not and never where members of the Republican Socialist Movement) who use the name of the INLA to line there pockets. The representative stated that Dublin INLA had a list of names of these parasites and that a number of them had been forcibly warned to desist from there activities or face serious concequences. He stated that members of Dublin INLA were not criminals and that they would not be detered by the "no proof media sensationalists, who operate to a securicrat agenda. read full story / add a comment

Last Saturday shoppers on Limerick’s O’Connell St got a chance to caste their vote for ‘Scrooge of the Year 2006’. Shell emerged victorious in Socialist Youth’s competition to find the most hated company in the country and were awarded their title on Tuesday the 19th at Shell HQ in Dublin. read full story / add a comment

9 states globally have enacted laws which allow their courts put to trial those accused of genocide. Accordingly June 2003 Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzón jailed Ricardo Miguel Cavallo, (also known as Miguel Angel Cavallo), a former Argentine naval officer, extradited from Mexico to Spain pending his trial on charges of genocide and terrorism relating to the years of Argentina's military dictatorship (1976 to 1983) in which over 9,000 Argentinians and as many as 30,000 disappeared. Today the Spanish courts ruled that Cavallo may better tried in Argentina. As a result, as of this morning the Argentinian state has 40 days to get their extradition process & papers in order. read full story / add a comment

The Moriarity Tribunal has given us a clear indication of the past state of Irish politics. if we are to learn anything, it should be that political life must be more carefully scrutinised and that initatives proposed by politicians must be more openly debated before taxpayers are asked to pay for such proposals. Ógra Shinn Féin mobilised across Ireland on Saturday 16 December demanding the release of IRA prisoners in Ireland and anti Imperialist prisoners across the world. There were protests, solidarity collections, candlelit vigils, banners made and thousands of leaflets distributed to a very supportive public. There was also a public meeting held in the English midlands by Socialist Labour Party highlighting the campaign. The message went out loud and clear from the day of action - A.R.I.S.E and free the prisoners! For the remainder of the month of December there will be further actions in solidarity with the prisoners. read full story / add a comment

In light of the Moriarty Tribunal report into payments made to Charles J. Haughey, it seems as good a time as any to reflect on the career and influence of one of the most controversial politicians - some would say the most controversial politian - that Ireland has ever seen. We now have a clearer, almost forensic, understanding of what Haughey gained from public office, but what about the balance to that? What did he give to the Irish people? What did he leave behind? ‘The Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ is an annual award and exhibition organised by the Natural History Museum in London, and the BBC Wildlife Magazine. The exhibition goes on an extensive tour of the U.K., as well as touring Spain, Portugal, Poland, Australia, the U.S., the Netherlands, and Abu Dhabi. Shell have a two year sponsorship deal with the Natural History Museum, which means that ’The Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ is the ’Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ until at least late 2008. There has been some campaigning in London to put pressure on the Natural History Museum not to take sponsorship from Shell. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea has, from the very start, been about more than the fact that a community in a remote area of Ireland were being used as guinea pigs in a vast experiment to see if natural gas could be processed on shore. What was at stake was whether the state would support the needs of big business against its own people. The central question of the campaign has always been whether communities are expendable, not in the interests of the nation, but in the interests of the shareholders. How far, the campaign asked, is a European government willing to go to support the desires of a multi-national, when these run counter to the demands of its own citizens? Could the Left in Ireland use the energy of the state's unquestioning support for Shell to expose and undermine the state's apparatus of control? read full story / add a comment

The Captive Animals' Protection Society and Alliance for Animal Rights have renewed their criticism of the Arts Council for again funding animal circuses, shortly after a major report detailing the poor conditions animals are subjected to in Irish circuses. The Arts Council today announced they had given 230,000 Euros to circuses for 2007, 100,000 Euros more than in 2006. The circuses funded include Duffy’s and Fossett’s, both of which use animals. Both CAPS and AFAR have called into question the Arts Council claim that circuses have to provide a copy of their ‘animal welfare policy’ when applying for funding. The Arts Council have refused to give CAPS copies of the policies and AFAR believe they do not exist. read full story / add a comment
