This is a small piece of the story of Ireland, taken on its own it is a local issue but it is being echoed right now all across the country and it raises many other issues in its wake; housing, development, local democracy, accountability, sustainability. All important and interesting but to cover all of them would make a long article so this concentrates on just one – Water, because that’s something I’m passionate about and something that is too much taken for granted in this water rich country. I trust that readers are intelligent enough to make the links. read full story / add a comment

"You see I was born back in the so-called free days of the sixties, in the front bedroom of a working class house back in Dublin. My mother's water's broke, a girl was born but a boy was celebrated. A two second glance. A decision made condemning me to a life rejection, loneliness, misunderstanding, bias, loss and rape. I don't mean rape in the sexual sense but in the sense of being forced to live a lie. That is a rape of my soul, the real me." - Talk given this evenng by Lynda Sheridan at LGBT Carol Service in the Unitarian Church read full story / add a comment

Ireland is supplying troops to fight the Bush/Blair “war on terror” in Afghanistan, and it has been doing so since July 2002. Not many, it’s true. But Ireland is a contributor to ISAF, the NATO-led multi-national force there, which has killed hundreds, if not thousands, of Afghans in recent months. read full story / add a comment

Since the partition of Ireland two state forces have emerged with similar agendas. They have inherited many qualities of the old orders of control. The Garda and the RUC/PSNI. (The force has changed its name several times) are the strongest wings of state control. The RUC is the more starkly apparent of the two given its infamous role as a counter insurgency force and tool of repression. read full story / add a comment

As Christmas approaches we all need to be aware of the importance of proper animal care, in particular dogs and cats, many of which when puppies and kittens are given as Christmas presents. It might be a great idea at first but what about when reality sinks in and by the time New Year arrives your puppy has chewed your child's favourite new toy? Or your kitten has clawed her way round your new leather handbag? Animals are exactly that- animals, and without lots of advanced planning and preparation it is un-realistic to treat them like cute Christmas presents that can be played with then put away. read full story / add a comment

We cry out for a church that speaks without fear of consequences, including loss of revenues. We understand that we live in a time of great fear and peril. We need to remind ourselves that we are not to fear those that can kill the body, but instead to fear those that can kill the soul. Our domestic and foreign policies have left us a nation without a soul. We call on our Church to be a prophetic voice, a sanctuary, and a source of encouragement to those who want to work together in community towards peace and justice. read full story / add a comment

That is humiliating now isn't it? Kyoto was ignored- indeed , hats off to Joan Burton and her engaging quip-"he,Mnister in charge of climate change cannot even get the electoral register right." read full story / add a comment
