Soziedad Alkoholica cleared by Spanish Judiciary. The logo "is similar" but that is "art".
international / consumer issues / news report Thursday November 30, 2006 23:02 by iosaf   image 1 image
The Basque political situation is not all about the "Peace Process". Many other things happen there too.

For years the group "Soziedad Alkoholica" used a logo on their albums of anarcho-punk garage angst music which was quite obviously a take on the logo used by ETA.

Their disks were withdrawn from sale by the largest department store chain & they were brought before the Judiciary to be investigated for "incitement to or glorification of terrorism". They've been cleared. They sing songs about victims too. read full story / add a comment

The future of forestry in Ireland will be affected by the National Forest Standard being put together by the Irish Forest Certification Initiative (IFCI) steering group that is now at the stage of third and final draft. Big forestry concerns are trying to push through a weak standard so that they can easily get their Forest Stewardship Certification with little regard for social and environmental factors (e.g. pollution of water courses, landslides such as at Derrybrien, native trees and biodiversity, landscape character). Consultation with the public has been limited due to lack of information and advertising of meetings. If a weak standard is accepted, then we can expect more of the same Sitka Spruce plantations raping our natural environment for years to come - and more of Coillte's selling off of state lands in their control to make up for the lack of profitability from Sitka Spruce - and more pollution and landslides. read full story / add a comment

Isn't it strange that when in sniffing distance of getting back into power the local parties shy away from association with opposition to separate water charges. Is the thought of missing out on the double tax so hard to swallow. Maybe the truth is as suspected that all allong the likes of the DUP SF really agreed with the policy. read full story / add a comment

After waging a battle against Christian right-wing sect Faderhuset for several years, recent decisions in both the Copenhagen City Court and the National Court have ordered the current occupiers of infamous Danish social centre Ungdomshuset out on December 14th, 2006. This decision and the process through which it was made is hotly contested. This is obvious through both extensive coverage in mainstream Cophenhagen social democratic newspapers like Politiken and in how opposition from the centre´s users more recently spilled over into street fighting when police attacked ( 1 ) a Reclaim the Streets demonstration.

This interview was carried out during their 24th birthday party which was on during the weekend of October 25th. It tries to go into some of the recent history around the Ungdomshuset court saga so far, the strange alliances formed around it and how the future is likely to pan out for a building that remains highly emblematic as a symbol for the left overs of the Northern European autonome scene. read full story / add a comment

Marchistas Listening to Morales in La Paz Yesterday (Photo Bolivia IMC)
international / anti-capitalism / news report Thursday November 30, 2006 01:10 by D'other   image 1 image
Hurriedly returning from negotiations with the Shell executive in Holland, Evo Morales last night granted accession to a law of agrarian reform leading many of La Paz´s morning tabloids to carry headlines claiming he had declared war on the latifundia dominating the country's system of land distribution. In Santa Cruz and Beni, regions dominating 80% of the Bolvian economy, as little as 14 families hold over 3m hectares of unproductive grounds in their hands. This new land reform facilitates removing this land from idle hands and redistributing it to campesinos, similar perhaps to legislation facilitating the placing of unproductive factories into the hands of workers in Argentina. The passing of the law was accompanied by the arrival of marchistas from across the country as an excercise in popular support for the land reforms. read full story / add a comment

The most immediately striking thing about Guillermo del Toro’s latest film “El Laberinto del Fauno” (Pan’s Labyrinth) is that it is entirely in Spanish with English subtitles yet still draws large crowds in Dublin’s ordinary multi-screen cinemas. The film, a mixture of fantastic fairy-tale and dramatic account of life in post civil war Spain, follows the journey of a highly imaginative young girl called Ofelia. Ofelia’s mother has married a sadistic fascist army Captain, who is engaged in a battle with local guerrillas throughout the film, and she is forced to move to his remote outpost despite a complicated and pregnancy. read full story / add a comment

If a high dose of radiation element, Polonium 210, can be a tool of quick assassination, lower doses (as in typical cigarettes) are no less tools of homicide. Ask health officials, et al, why Po-210 is still permitted in cigarettes, with zero warning to anyone. Ask why smokers and Pub Proprietors bear the burdens of law, but the cig makers, ingredient suppliers, and complicit regulators go free.

A visit to Rossport focuses the mind on the issues at stake.

Come and see for yourself: this project is fundamentally flawed, needs to be, and will be reconfigured.

A renewed effort at informing ourselves and friends & the wider public is needed, to create broader awareness of the issues here.
