Section 1(1) of the 1935 Criminal Law (Amendment Act), was declared unconstitutional last week in relation to a case wherein a man claimed that at the time of the 'unlawful carnal knowledge' of a minor, of which he was convicted, he believed that she was of age. Yesterday's judgement by Ms justice Mary Laffoy in another case involving a then, 38 year old man and twelve year old girl had no choice but to take this section of the act into account, but to reject the whole section of the act in toto. Coverage of the Judgement is splashed all over the corporate media this morning. The issue of lack of protections for the child herein, scrape the surface of the failure of this administration through consistent legislative failures which encompass not alone the Dept of Justice, but also the Dept of Education. The administration as a whole with regard to Church /State indemnity, the collapse of the Laffoy Commission and this Latest fiasco which leaves our most vulnerable citizens at risk. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 3rd June 2006, the family and friends of Terence Wheelock along with supporters of their campaign for Justice will gather for a vigil at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sean McDermott St, Dublin 1 at 12pm, a year and a day to the date upon which Terence was arrested and taken to Store St Garda Station, from where he was later to leave in a coma for the Mater Hospital. Three and a half months later he died. The Garda Síochána claim the injuries which ultimately resulted in his death were self inflicted, yet their actions subsequent to his arrest and detention lead any reasonable person to suspect otherwise. The recent unwarranted invasion of the Wheelock home and ongoing documented intimidation of the family as they continue to search for the truth, confirm for many these suspicions. Following the vigil a peaceful protest will be held at Store St Garda. All supporters of a civil society where a person's life is not endangered or threatened by the powers of the state; a society where justice is not exclusively a posession of the priveleged and dominant, are asked to attend. (1) Gary Mc Kinnon has lost his extradition case & will now be sent to the USA. A UK court recommended last wednesday that the 40 year old unemployed Gary Mc Kinnon be extradited to face US charges of entering without password in their most secure databases to look for UFO files. that means the anglo-saxon world are the enemies of hackers (2) the Brazilian minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, has defended his state's internet law (which is the most tolerant in the world) and hailed hackers and creative users of the new technology at a world Internet conference which opened yesterday in Europe. this means Brazil is still the hackers' best pal read full story / add a comment

In Co. Cork, the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) wants to route 12-14km of overhead Power Lines and Pylons from Dromourneen to Ballylickey, just North of Bantry in West Cork. 27 local landowners who form the Bantry Concerned Action Group are saying NO because of health, safety and environmental concerns. They say ... 'Put the power line under the ground, where it's safer and it's impact is less severe.' The ESB say 'No, we'll put it where we want and the Electricity Supply Act of 1927 gives us the power to do what we like on your land'. In Co. Limerick, the communities of Kildimo and Pallaskenry are fighting for the retention of their Spring Water source and supply from Bleach Lough lake, while Limerick County Council want to connect them to a new water supply ... the polluted, yes POLLUTED River Deel! As we all had better know by now, a child rapist known as "Mr A". was released from custody this afternoon as a result of a Supreme Court Judgement made last week which ruled that the Statutory Rape Act of 1935 is unconstitutional. At 38 years of age he plied a 12 year old with alcohol and received a 3 year sentance which would have been served in its entirety later this year. Against that backdrop, the worst minister for Justice this state has ever endured, presented to the cabinet his proposals for new legislation on the age of consent and sexual offences relating to the underage, teenagers & mature persons. I really think the reader would do well to consider this news, and concern themselves with the issues which have emerged. read full story / add a comment

The publication of the Arts act 2003, by ex Minister for justice , Equality and Law reform , Mr John O Donoghue TD only received passing comment by corporate media at the time. The Irish Times referred to the Act in Terms of Dilution of the independence of the Arts Council by the new act which for the first time since the foundation of the State allowed a Minister or the Government to set the agenda for artistic expression in the State. On Saturday 27th May, Ogra Shinn Fein in strabane held a "Smash Political Policing" protest at railway street in the town. The protest was in response to the recent harassment of young Republicans in west Tyrone by the RUC/PSNI. During the protest, a number of Ogra Shinn Fein activists occupied the rooftop of the library and dropped a banner reading "Smash Political Policing Now". The protestors sounded airhorns and whistles to get the public's attention, while activists on the ground distributed information leaflets on political policing. While returning from the protest one young activist was approached and grabbed by a member of the RUC/PSNI, though when confronted by another group of protestors the harassment ceased. read full story / add a comment

Alan Stanley’s book describes the death of the Pearson brothers using a variety of sources: (1) The contemporary (July 7 1921) account in the Unionist newspaper “The King’s County Chronicle, Parsonstown” (King’s County and Parsonstown are, respectively, Co. Offaly and Birr) which quotes their sister Matilda Pearson on her brothers’ death and the burning of their house; (2) A 1983 description by a surviving Pearson brother David Pearson in Australia; (3) A summary of descriptions of those events by William Stanley who was with the Pearson brothers when they were arrested and who subsequently lived in Carlow until his death in 1981; (4) A number of comments gathered by Alan Stanley, mostly from Protestant neighbours and relatives of the Pearsons after 1981, and principally from Tom Mitchell of Kinnitty near Coolacrease. I have sent the following letter to the various leaders involved with the Peace Process in Northern Ireland. I am asking for an explaination, why the people of Ulster are being forced into allowing known terrorists, to help govern the country that they have tried to destroy for thirty years. Historic movies about ireland seem to always make it big on the big screen but at what costs? Whose authorisation is required ? What about the famine? The mass grave where 5000 poor of the district were buried near my house is also a story to tell! Why can't a fim maker make a movie about the great famine? So that Irish Americans can see what their forefathers lived through before emigrating to the USA. This is a story that needs to be told! From the fact that the people were to starve, food supplies they needed withdrawn from them, workhouses, emigration aboard coffun ships etc. The world needs to know!!! read full story / add a comment

American fiddle player Geof Bard, a generalist known to appear at an occasional Irish sessions on the US west coast, occasionally attacks a guitar, and has been blasting Blair on the airwaves with his fiddle and this adaptation of WIJ, a tune which is occasionally, erroneously known in the states as "Killkenny Mountain". I am very concerned that too much attention is being given in Irish publick life and general discourse to small & confined groups of people. One lot use letters, Mr A., witness B., chid C., Fr D., ex-Fr E., on holidays now still Fr F., not yet heard victim G., not yet other heard victim H., seen on TV but not let in give testinomy victims I through to U, recently deceased person V, poor little case X,............. need I go on? Oh yes. Then there's the Government & the news casters / readers / journalists, & the courts, & the really holy clergy, and Bono, who seem to get all the attention. read full story / add a comment

éirígí, the newly formed Socialist Republican campaigns group, launched it’s ‘Reclaim the Republic/Athshealbhaígí an Phoblacht’ campaign over the course of last weekend. The campaign aims to bring the message of 1916 to the people and trigger a debate about the nature of modern day Ireland and how it compares to the Ireland envisioned in the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. In attempting to make this a reality, éirígí has begun to distribute thousands of full colour poster-size copies of the Proclamation to the citizens of Dublin on a not for profit basis. Over the course of the weekend éirígí activists distributed hundreds of copies of the Proclamation in various location across the city, including, Tallaght, Crumlin, Walkinstown, Drumcondra, Ballybough and the City Centre. éirígí activists will continue to distribute these posters over the coming weeks and months. Any donations received will be used to cover the cost of printing additional posters for further distribution. In this way éirígí hopes to ensure that the Proclamation will hang with pride in homes, workplaces and schools across the city. read full story / add a comment

A meeting, organised as part of Galway's first ever Basque Week, was held on Wednesday. Young republicans and Basque ex-pats discussed ETA's recent ceasefire, and the Basque Left-Abertzale's peace initiative.
