A large protest took place outside the offices of the Health and Safety Authority to mark international workers commemoration day. The protest was supported by BATU and SIPTU as well as local T.D. A recent medialens alert highlighted the cartoon nature of a news report/one-sided smear on Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. John Pilger described it as “one of the worst, most distorted pieces of journalism I have ever seen” - in which, Channel 4’s Washington Correspondent Jonathan Rugman smeared Chavez in "a piece seemingly written by the US State Department". read full story / add a comment

In the global controversy over corporate control of agricultural seeds, crops and food, an emergency community meeting was held Tuesday night at the tiny village of Summerhill, Co. Meath. The village is next door to the site of a proposed five year experiment with 450,000 patented genetically modified (GMO) potatoes. The local community is worried that farmers who become contaminated by the patented potatoes may lose ownership of their crops . They are also worried about the scientific evidence of health and environmental risks, the impact on property values, and a threatened boycott of Irish potatoes if the experiment goes ahead. read full story / add a comment

cork / environment / opinion/analysis Wednesday April 26, 2006 16:59 by Kathy Sinnott
I come from a long line of savers, women and men who believed that a rubber band or piece of string or jar lid should not be thrown away as it will come in handy some day. The fact that being a saver meant full drawers and stuffed shelves didn’t dissuade us, nor the fact that because of the clutter we couldn’t find the thing we saved when we finally needed it. Saving is ingrained. In our case, saving is almost genetic. Recycling was an easy concept for us. “Waste not. Want not” Recycling is just a more communal variation on saving with the advantage of no clutter. read full story / add a comment

The Pope does product placing. At least that was the message from the Wall Street Journal today, and reported globally in translation. It was perhap a sly puritan reference to the rumoured movement on permissive Vatican condom rule relaxation between married really sick people. Or perhaps it was just more bollox, like the pope's election, or all of Dan Brown, or 1916, or the Moon Landings, or 911, or blood sacrifices in general, and more particularly - "everything you watch on TV". But that much said.., The Pope, Benedict XVI; (the man (((i))) reminded everyone wore a NAZI uniform as a politically indoctrinated minor); the German Shepherd; Papa Ratzi; the Black Pope; yer man :- has worn these multi-national-corporate logos and products... read full story / add a comment

Like any other Open Publishing site Indymedia.ie attracts its fair share of trolls. For some years Indymedia users have been harrassed by an obsessed cyber-stalker going under a variety of names. This troll has abused people through the site, as well as sending intimidating and insulting personal emails to different constributors on our editorial lists (particularly to a woman who contributes to the list). This crackpot's one-person mission to monitor the workings of the site has also prompted them into going as far as using a popular blogging site to pour deliberately ill-informed abuse on Indymedia contributors including editors. read full story / add a comment
