Indications are that there will be a considerable change in the make up of the city council in Galway. Outgoing were 5 FF, 4 PD, 4 FG, 2 Lab. Based on tallies, incoming looks like 3-4 Lab, 2 SF, 1 Green (maybe), 1 Ind, 2 FF, 3 PD, 2-3 FG. Tokie Laotan (see earlier report on racist harassment of this candidate) polled a respectable 311 votes —about half of what is needed for a seat read full story / add a comment

When I heard that Ronald Reagan was dead, my first reaction was to burst into song —a Christy Moore song that was on many a lip twenty years ago. For it was exactly twenty years ago –the first Saturday of June 1984- that the then president arrived in town to accept an honorary doctorate (in laws, of all things) from University College Galway (UCG). It was an election year, and an opportune moment to pose for Irish-American voters with a parchment in one hand and pint of Guinness in the other. read full story / add a comment

The EU-US summit (June 25-26, Dromoland Castle, Ireland) may result in a de facto launch of free trade negotiations between the EU and the US. Little-known but influential bodies like the Transatlantic Policy Network and the Transatlantic Business Dialogue are campaigning behind the scenes for a barrier-free Transatlantic marketplace. TABD co-chairs Niall Fitzgerald (Chairman Unilever) and Douglas Daft (Chairman Coca-Cola) will attend the EU-US summit to present their demands. read full story / add a comment

Police repression of homeless people was evident on Belfast’s Botanic Avenue tonight, & if that wasn’t enough Food Not Bombs were assaulted for objecting. Not long after we set up our stall (around 7pm) 3 police officers began hassling a young man for begging outside Botanic Train Station (around 20 metres away from us). After about 15-20 minutes the police arrested this man dragging him to their van with excessive force. Several people from FNB approached the police & objected to the manner in which they were treating this man. read full story / add a comment

We were out in strength again today with our awareness activity only being kyboshed by the 6.00 pm closing time of the Amnesty International shop in Middle Street where Jameen, ever overflowing with the milk of human kindness, allows us to store our gear. Can't understand the view of one of the commentators to DAYS 7& 6 that we/I am "toadying up" to American tourists, the reason why I keep mentioning the American, tourist or otherwise, reaction to our stall is that the anti-Bush feeling amongst the broad majority of them is strong and palpable, more so than any other 'non nationals' that we encounter and, as such, heartens me at least. your shite sounds like 'anti-americanism' to me 'Gaillimhed' , so, in future, keep a tight rein on your bollocks and sphincter and do us all a favour, ok ?. amen read full story / add a comment
