Actor Cillian Murphy today (Monday 23rd Feb) helped launch a major public awareness campaign for the charity Focus Ireland to highlight the growing problem of homelessness and social housing crisis in Ireland. While working on material concerning racism in the media, I found that nowhere on the internet could I get a copy of Mary Ellen Synon's infamous article she wrote in 1996 concerning Travellers. This article achieved a new low in standards of journalism in Ireland. Four years later, the same writer managed to offend all but Kevin Myers when she wrote about the athletes in the Special Olympics. I have scanned the 1996 article into our own web site for reference. February marks the start of a campaign to call on organizations and initiatives to sign the European Manifesto for Minority Community Media. This manifesto supports and underlines the importance of minority community media and calls for recognition of the role this sector plays in Europe. The initiators aim to get as many signatures as possible by 15 April 2004. Organizations and initiatives interested to sign the European Manifesto can do so from 9 February 2004 onwards. The campaign will culminate in the presentation of the manifesto to the President of the European Parliament before the European elections in 2004.
