CPIR Statement on the Meaning of the British Legion poppy Once again, we have come to that time of year when we see our TV screens saturated with the blood red poppy of the British Legion. Programmes aimed at young people, such as The X-Factor, are particularly targeted. Contestants, regardless of their origin, are forced to wear the symbol of the British Legion. And, because of the abject dependence of RTÉ on programming of British origin, Irish youths are just as subjected to this symbol as are their British contemporaries. And every year, we see, in the streets of Ireland, the results of this media saturation of young minds. More and more young Irish people think it is “cool” to wear a British Legion poppy. So, what is the British Legion? What is it’s poppy symbol? Is it a harmless fashion statement? A benign badge of belonging to the dominant tribe, a harmless mark of British nationalism? Is it a harmless remembrance of soldiers, fallen in long past wars? read full story / add a comment ![]()

What is the meaning or significance of the British Legion poppy? A harmless mark of belonging? A badge of British nationalism? Or a neutral remembrance of long past wars? The CPIR offers a different reading. read full story / add a comment

An ethical approach to human rights, development and globalization to replace neo liberalism is seen as the way to address lack of open government, many human rights omissions leading to mass neglect and the suppression of 'bottom-up' development in New Zealand. The mass purging of 'tall poppies', the 'crushing and isolation' of those at the bottom of the social scale and terrible social outcomes for many children were seen as a consequence of the hegemonic ambitions of a bi-cultural bureaucratic elite wanting to ensure no bottom-up challenges to top-down control. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Britain passes its ten year mark in the war on Afghanistan, a war that has never had any popular support and presently has no end in sight. This year's Armistice Day 11/11/11 was hyped by the media into a compulsory red poppy wearing day as a form of loyalty oath to the war without end. Compulsory for all those in public life. The wearing of the red poppy may have begun as a "Never Again" sentiment, the government has attempted to hijack it as a recruiting tool in these long years of war. Footballers had the red poppy sewn into their jersies, the international friendly against Spain was tarnsformed into an electronic Nuremberg Rally by the televison conglomerates. All those appearing on Sky and BBC had to wear a red poppy. read full story / add a comment

Veteran Irish Republican and Human Rights Activist, Bill O'Brien (Dublin and Donegal), takes on Former Fine Gael TD, Paddy Harte over the latter's promotion of the wearing of the British poppy and the glorification of war.
Bill will also be on Ocean Fm Radio on Monday 14th November 2011, on the Niall Delaney show at 9.05am. Paddy Harte has been requested to come on and discuss the issues - no doubt the arch imperialist will avoid the opportunity to debate. read full story / add a comment

The British secret service MI5 has displayed nothing but contempt for democracy in Ireland, indeed its own agents are on record as describing it as Nazi like body, particularly when it comes to the Irish people throughout its history. During all its years in Ireland its agenda has involved, wholesale slaughter of Irish citizens, in directing and co-ordinating the Dublin and Monaghan no warning car bombs, that murdered 33 people.Aside from co-ordinating several such bombings against innocent Irish people, it was identifying, targeting and killing Irish people they considered a threat or challenge to their control over all of Ireland, north and south. MI5still continues to this day to frame innocent Irish people all over the island, into lengthy prison sentences, among them the innocent brother-in-law of dead hunger striker Bobby Sands for twenty years, simply on the basis of vindictiveness and his ties to the Sands family. read full story / add a comment

Prisoners are only allowed to wear the lilies - a symbol of the 1916 Rising - in their cells. The relatives of some prisoners claimed that a work to rule by staff, had also affected conditions in the jail. Geraldine Taylor from Republican Sinn Fein in Belfast said: "They just decided enough is enough, which we totally agree with and they're not going to take it lying down any longer. "That was really the reason because they're locked up for 23 hours. During that period they don't get fed, they don't get water, they don't get using the showers, they don't get out for exercise or anything else. "Mentally, they just explode." read full story / add a comment ![]()

As this article is published the leader of the BNP, England's neo-fascist racist political party & one of the principle articulators of European neo-nazism in the English language has entered the BBC studios in London to take part in a BBC "question time" broadcast. The presence of Griffin has not gone without protest or reaction in Britain as much as in Ireland. This article collates much of the recent coverage of that reaction & puts this week's publishing on the internet on "Wikileaks" of the current BNP membership list in context. But the point of this article is to examine from a leftist and Irish perspective the possible consequences of the BBC invitation to Griffin and the reaction in the liberal English chattering classes and at parliamentary level. Rather than moving to a revamping of the Race Relations Act the British it seems are considering a return to the censorship which was applied to the factions of the north of Ireland in general and Sinn Fein in particular. read full story / add a comment ![]()

According to the Swedish "Dagens Nyheter" newspaper's updates in the last two hours, the US military entered a hospital run by the Swedish Committe for Afghanistan this week in pursuit of a patient who according to them held valuable intelligence on the Taliban. This would constitute a breach of the Geneva Conventions. This newsbreak follows coverage of the strongest statements critical of the NATO strategy so far by the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt at the meeting of EU foreign ministers held yesterday. Anyone who prizes Irish neutrality or perhaps those who sneer at such a thing, ought know that Sweden is a neutral state. It is unique amongst the neutral states of Europe in that it boasts a highly developed arms industry which indeed is also one of the oldest happily supplying military hardward to all and sundry since before Napoleon. The Swedish share the northern "Provincial Reconstruction Team" with the Finnish under German command. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The recent attacks on Gaza by the Israeli state have brought strange bedfellows out of the Irish woodwork. Almost to a man, and woman, those who were vitriolic in opposition to the Irish Peace Process have been four-square behind the slaughter in Gaza. Eoghan Harris, Kevin Myers, Tom Carew, Ruth Dudley Edwards, please take a bow. A short report on the role they played in support of the IDF – Israeli Defence Forces – is in order. Here is what they said and how it relates to their Irish politics. read full story / add a comment
