Ógra Shinn Féin Dublin has condemned the attack on a statue commemorating Irish Patriot Seán Russell. Unknown individuals painted Nazi flags on the base of the monument late on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and also poured red paint over it. The new bronze memorial to Seán Russell,a veteran of the Easter Rising and IRA chief of staff during the bombing campaign launched in London in 1939, stands in Fairview Park in Dublin and was only recently unveiled by the National Graves Association following the destruction of a previous memorial by vandals in 2004. read full story / add a comment

The abject disregard of the Irish political elite for Ireland's neutrality has been demonstrated by the routine transit of US military planes and troops through Shannon Airport for most of this decade. With the re-run of the Lisbon Treaty referendum we are now being asked to accept EU promises that it will not affect or prejudice Ireland's traditional policy of military neutrality. But the ongoing support of the Irish government for US-led NATO exercises around the world clearly shows that we cannot trust our leaders to uphold Irish neutrality, with or without the non-binding decisions that have been tagged onto the Treaty in an attempt to have it accepted by the people of Ireland. read full story / add a comment

"We will set the standards for delivering health and social care services and we will continuously inspect to ensure that these standards are being met." "We will help deliver value for your money by monitoring that the resources in our health and social services are used in a way which delivers the best outcome for the patient or service user." The above lines taken from the front page of HIQA’s web site strike me as being rather gung-ho. It appears that HIQA is setting itself up like some martinet intent on squeezing performance out of unwilling minions. read full story / add a comment

On the 22nd and 23rd of July the Irish Times published two articles, by Northern Editor, Gerry Moriarty reporting from Israel where he spent the best part of a week with a group of other Irish journalists embedded at the invitation of the Israeli Ministry of foreign-affairs, politicians, charity workers, community activists, religious, business and medical people and ordinary civilians. Reading the articles his hosts must have been well pleased with their efforts to rehabilitate Israel’s tarnished image in the wake of its latest massacre in Gaza. Anyone familiar with Israel’s brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people would be forgiven for thinking that Mr. Moriarty must have enjoyed a little too much of his hosts hospitality before writing the articles. read full story / add a comment |
