Supporters coming from Limerick, Clare, Galway, Sligo, Mayo, Kildare, Meath, Wexford and Waterford gathered outside the department with a huge banner reading ‘Ban Fur Farming in Ireland Now!’ others held placards with a picture of a fox’s face with the tagline ‘Your Fur Had A Face’. The supporters were also joined by another ARAN member holding a body screen TV showing live footage of a recent investigation into fur farming in China where no animal welfare laws exist, the footage was heartbreaking but made people who seeing the footage more eager to double their efforts to stop this animal suffering. Six Animal Rights Action Network volunteers also posed for photographers wearing blindfolds whilst holding signs reading ‘Minister Mary Coughlan: Ban Fur Farming in Ireland’. read full story / add a comment

In the wake of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences Bill) 2006; as amended in 2007, two expert committees were set up to look at :- The issue of consent , to which interest groups were invited to make submission; and in the wake of that a committee was set up under the chairmanship of Mary O Rourke (Senator) to look at amending the Constitution. Latest news on the issue of Protection is that the State may postpone the Referendum now until 2009, because they do not (nor do the opposition) want the two Referenda to coincide and create confusion for the voter. The Government had discussed holding a referendum on Protection on the same day as the Lisbon Treaty Vote. read full story / add a comment

On Monday January 28 Ruairi O Bradaigh, President of Republican Sinn Fein took part in a debate in University College Cork. The debate was organised by UCC Philosophical Society, he opposed the motion “That This House Believes That Irish Republicanism Has No Future', proposing the motion was Eoghan Harris, writer and commentator and member of the 26-County Senate. read full story / add a comment

This past Saturday, a van load of pilgrims en route to the Festival of St Brigid in Kildare were stopped by the Irish Special Branch. We were questioned under Section 31 of the Offences Against the State Act and a detective accused me of being a terrorist. Deeply concerned and outraged at the continued use of Guantanamo as a US torture site, the ongoing Israeli collective punishment of Gaza and the facilitation of US troops and CIA torture flights through Shannnon Warport, members of the public, activists from Galway Food Not Bombs and the IPSC joined the Galway Alliance Against War protest at the Liam Mellows statue in Eyre Square this afternoon. Unfortunately, Rhuhel Ahmed, the British citizen who spent two years in the torture camp after being kidnapped with two of his friends whilst attending a wedding in Pakistan, could'nt attend. Fortunately, some 140 people attended including Michael D. This is the last week of the annual Turner Exhibit in the National Gallery's Print Room. The blurb on the boards describes the provenance of the bequest and the agreement between the estate of the collector and the Scottish and Irish galleries. We only exhibit the Turner's in their climate control cases during the month of January, this is largely because they are drawings and washes of landscapes and are fragile. The light is weakest at this time of year in Dublin and conducive to a visit. read full story / add a comment
