Foreigners in Angola left high and dry as passports are detained. The situation is the result of restructuring the passport office in Luanda. This all comes at a time of inceasing unease in Angola's political climate. There have been reports of passports having been detained for up to two months now and still no sign of them being returned. Hundreds of foreigners, wishing to return to Europe and other destinations have had to cancel flights as a result of the confusion. read full story / add a comment
Building workers join the protest

A large protest took place outside the offices of the Health and Safety Authority to mark international workers commemoration day. The protest was supported by BATU and SIPTU as well as local T.D. Ruairi Quinn and Sean Ryan T.D. of Labour. There was a considerable amount of corporate press photographers and tv cameras as well.

The family of Justin Foley were also present and they laid flowers for Justin at the doorstep of the HSA in Hogan place. There was a minutes silence at 12. Building workers held 23 crosses one - each to represent each worker killed in work related accidents during 2005. read full story / add a comment

A recent medialens alert highlighted the cartoon nature of a news report/one-sided smear on Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
John Pilger described it as “one of the worst, most distorted pieces of journalism I have ever seen” - in which, Channel 4’s Washington Correspondent Jonathan Rugman smeared Chavez in "a piece seemingly written by the US State Department".

An advertisement has appeared in national papers today inviting applications from voluntary disability organisations to apply for money for, er, well, it's difficult to say actually. But it's definitely got something to do with 'developing operational capacity'. read full story / add a comment
