The British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Lord Triesman, in a speech given to the Royal Commonwealth Society on the 26th of June, has stated that in facing up to the challenges posed by the 21st century, the Commonwealth must learn the lessons of the past, and he added: “In a globalised world the Commonwealth cannot go it alone.” The Minister also said that: “The people and governments of the Commonwealth must help address the big issues facing the world. The Commonwealth does have a comparative advantage in many niche areas, including Diversity, Identity, and Multiculturalism. It must exploit these at all levels.” read full story / add a comment

Madame K on Pride'06: "Despite the rain nothing could dampen the spirits of the 2,000 or so who took part. The diverse group was well catered for, with the event concluding in a free party held on public space. Wheelchair access, kids area and signed language to facilitate a true sense of inclusiveness for all that gathered for the after party. The EPA website today invites you to give them your opinion on how well they do their job. This is newsworthy as it is a rare event for a State agency to put itself into the spotlight in this way. However the call for opinions needs a little more publicity than simply appearing on the EPA website. Indymedia's newswire allows readers to learn about stuff like this from a central point - that is what makes Indymedia so valuable. read full story / add a comment

Twenty-four Greenpeace activists from Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK were arrested earlier this month at NATO’s Brussels Headquarters. A Greenpeace truck carrying a 3.6 meter (12 feet) full-size replica of a US B61 nuclear bomb blocked the entrance to NATO with activists bearing banners saying “Nukes out of NATO.” Their demand: remove the 480 US-owned and controlled nuclear weapons from Europe! read full story / add a comment
