Last week in the European Parliament we voted strongly to eliminate Mercury from our food, air, water and soil in as far as we can. Of course deciding to do it and doing it are different things but it is a start and I am hopeful that even if the elimination is not complete, people will at least benefit from a reduction. In California, thermerisol which contains mercury has been removed from pediatric vaccines. As the children who got thermerisol free vaccines are reaching preschool age, the state is reporting the first slowing down of the rate of increase in the numbers of children becoming autistic. read full story / add a comment

Today’s demonstration against the Canadian seal hunt went great, better than expected! We had a wonderful turn out, people just kept coming and going from 12noon til 2pm today Thursday March 23rd 2006! Volunteers from ARAN came from Limerick, Galway, Sligo, Meath and joined with our friends in Dublin! Many other caring people could not make it due to work commitments but called, written and emailed the Canadian embassy on the day, we also had a wonderful member of the Canadian public at this demo too and she now speaks out against this hunt and much more on animal cruelty. read full story / add a comment

The victory of Evo Morales in the presidential elections in Bolivia in December has underlined once more that across Latin America there is a demand for change. The first significant victory came back in 2002 when Lulu, the leader of the Brazilian Workers Party was elected to power after a long and arduous campaign that stretched back almost two decade. It is claimed that Lulu’s victory and his pronouncements about making Brazil a fairer society sent ‘shivers’ through world stock markets. read full story / add a comment

Last Saturday the third anniversary of the US-led imperialist invasion of Iraq was marked in Dublin by a demonstration and march of up to 1000 people through the city centre. This turnout was a major disappointment and highlighted the inertia which has affected the antiwar movement since the highpoint of February 2003 when over 100,000 people took to the streets of the nation’s capital. Here you can read the report and find out how to download the flyer from Workers Power. read full story / add a comment

To see the ideological bias of the Irish media, the treatment of the trade unions by our tribe of opinion writers is probably as good a place as any to start. If one was so foolish as to believe that the national media's commentators presented a reasonably accurate range of the opinions held by the population then you would probably come to the conclusion that trade unions were some sort of masonic conspiracy, made up of "pampered dinosaurs" who regularly "hold the country to ransom" and never cease to threaten our poor down-trodden consumers with their refusal to "embrace change". read full story / add a comment

"But, hark! a voice like thunder spake, The West's awake! the West's awake!" This is a first hand account of what is probably the first anti-war demonstration on the campus of Glenville State College since the Vietnam era protests. Students are fed up with President Bush and his illegal war in Iraq that is costing the lives of West Virginia's youth which are being exploited by the military in promise for scholarships. We have arisen from our slumber and shall no long stand idly by as Bush and his cronies are destroying not only our country but the world of which all of us live! read full story / add a comment |
