The recent letter from a reader of the Irish Times crying foul on a political cartoon that appeared in the wake of the late Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey’s death is interesting, because it epitomises the raw emotions that surface in the face of this form of political expression. I must add that I am in no way connected to the cartoonist in question, but that I have had the benefit of media training, and I can understand the nuances that this type of visual journalism can manifest within the reader. Often a cartoonist who has done previous work with a political figure may be signing off on the figure at the time of their death. read full story / add a comment

For three weeks running, Vincent Browne has written at length about Charles Haughey in Village, Browne's weekly current affairs magazine. Defenders of Haughey are not hard to find of course but it’s doubtful that there can be anyone who is so clearly conflicted and contradictory as Browne has been about 'The Boss'. read full story / add a comment

This is the text of a leaflet which has been drawn up by members of the Irish National Teachers Organisation who are opposed to the new pay deal as presented to us for ratification. A version of this leaflet was distributed to approx 500 INTO delegates from all over the country who attended a 'Consultative Conference' on Whole School Evaluation last weekend. Thanks to the generosity of a number of union members a copy of it has also been posted out to most schools in the Dublin area and some around the country. Unfortunately we don't have the €1500 it would cost to send the leaflet to all 3,000 or so primary schools in Ireland. This is not a problem that will face those who favour the deal - the union leadership. They have no problem spending members' money to give the 'pro' side of the argument. If you are a member of the INTO please print off this leaflet and distribute it to your work colleagues. If you would like to contribute financially to sending out the leaflet contact me at the Email address shown. While Driving through Ennis town yesterday afternoon a local anti-war activist put six young US service men under (citizens) arrest. On Thursday morning an US troop carrier landed at Shannon with technical problems. This is a common occurrence with the chartered troop carriers that come through Shannon Airport. With an average of 1100 hundred troops going through Irelands second international airport on a nightly basis these aircraft are flat out ferrying young men and women to Iraq. Many of these stranded soldiers were billeted at the West County Hotel in Ennis near where peace activist Conor Cregan encountered six young US servicemen on the main Ennis to Limerick road. read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War has claimed that attempts are being made by the authorities in Galway to stop an alternative air show being organised for Nimmo’s Pier, Claddagh at 1.30pm this Sunday. The local peace group plans to release 99 red balloons as a symbol of their opposition to what they term the “Salthill War Show”. This evening a member of the Gardaí went to the home of Niall Farrell, a member of GAAW, to inform him that the Superintendent wished to discuss “safety aspects” of the peace invent. read full story / add a comment

“If we can not know whether the courts are applying the law as passed by our legislators without editing or interference from another source our sovereignty is violated and every Act is now questionable as to its veracity. It also raises the huge question as to what subversive group has edited the legislation before it was published by the government stationery office”. In this instance where it applies to the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 it means that Constitutional protections given to parents very likely have been violated by the courts for the past forty years through implementation of incorrect text. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions how we can get an actual copy of the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 as actually passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President from the office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, as the enrolled text which are by Constitutional mandate held there are the only “conclusive evidence of the provisions of such law” then please tell us. read full story / add a comment |
