So I read in the Times this column inch about Bertie Ahern meeting a delegation from Iraq in Dublin organised by the IRI, that is all there no other mention of it I can find, ok so diplomatic meetings rarely get much sattention but this is more then that this is 8 MPs from Iraq's newly elected government. Ireland and the UN have brought democracy to Iraq and with all that bads news and 'unwarranted flak' the government has been getting over the Shannon and Bertie doesn' t want to use this opportumity to shout from the rooftops? with those men DEMOCRACY!! not even a photocall, or a told you so! you nitwit. Oh I wish I was one of those journalists you hear about. read full story / add a comment

Residents in the vicinity of the construction being undertaken on the site of the recently demolished Fatima Mansions today protested at the entrance of their estate over the inadequacy of a long time promised traffic management system which had been promised to them prior to construction work beginning. Two simultaneous blockades were mounted at either end of Lorreta Road, residents joined and left with a fluctuating prescence of anywhere between ten and fifteen maintaining the line on either side of the estate. Marylands is an estate located close to the canal, just off Marrowbone Lane beside Cork Street. Traffic on any given day on Marrowbone Lane is hectic, with cars using it as a route to cut through the Liberties to reach Cork St, leaving a very narrow artery dangerously clogged with passage for cyclists generally untenable at peak hours without using the paths. read full story / add a comment

I got a Hard Rain in recently and it blew me away. It's a photographic exploration of the effects of climate change illustrating Bob Dylan's prophetic lyrics. Everyone should read this book and I don't care where you get it so long as you get a look at it. If any book can shake people out of their complacency, this is the one. Make your libraries buy it, show it to your friends, family and co-workers, show it to everyone you meet every day. Read it and weep. And then do something about it. read full story / add a comment

Planning law in this country is a joke. For years the odds have been stacked in favour of unsustainable development and now the FF/PD coalition is making it harder for communities to legally challenge those who are making fortunes out of wrecking the place, be they speculators, developers, multi-nationals, politicans, contractors, quarrymen or even archaeologists (but not this one). read full story / add a comment

The Connolly Festival took place last weekend on Friday evening and all day Saturday. It was well attended by a large and diverse group of activists. On Friday night the same sex marriage discussion was packed to the brim with the meeting overflowing into the next room. What follows are some quotes and notes on what the different contributors said. Marie Mulholand : “More than 10 years ago two female friends of mine lived together in a couple and had a child together, living in London. One of these friends, Deborah, was involved in the Nicaraguan support community and wanted to visit Nicaragua. She drowned over there. Our union (UNISON) worked with Nicaraguan comrades to get the body home. Deborah had been ostracised by her family when she came out. They had had no contact with her since, didn’t know she had a child. When Anne arrived to the airport to the body arriving home, they found out that only the “family” had the rights to the body. No one was at the ceremony, only her parents, who had ostracised her. It was a horrendous situation. There were no rights for Anne. It was a painful experience for all of us who were gay, it brought home with such force exactly where we stood. The experience never left me.” read full story / add a comment

We the Republican POWs call on all nationalist, Republican people of Ireland and abroad to support us in our upcoming protest for better conditions and the restoration of political status. In 2003 we embarked on a protest for segregation, this battle was won and segregation was introduced in September of that year. At that time the Brits asked for a period of transition and conditions would then improve. These terms were accepted reluctantly by Republicans. read full story / add a comment

international / gender and sexuality / opinion/analysis Wednesday June 21, 2006 13:37 by Ryan
There is a complete lack of parental control and responsibility for their children in this country. Young girls and young boys totally unequipped for adult life are enagaging in sexual intercourse at increasingly young ages. This is a direct result from imagery on television, the internet, print media and most importantly from the behaviour of their adult peers. Every day I recoil in disgust as I see young girls barely finished playing with their dolls dressed in skimpy clothing with rouged lip and make up and overhear them openly using the most profane language and engaging in sexually explicit conversation or blatant heavy petting in public. Young boys are supposed to fulfill a predatory hard drinking macho stereotype. read full story / add a comment

There are occasions when the sheer wrongheaded analysis and distorted facts of a newspaper or magazine article cause you to stiffen with annoyance. Nine times out of ten, these articles are found in the mainstream press; the Independent Group of newspapers, for example, is a reliable purveyor of sly and explicit attacks on left-wing and progressive ideas, campaigns and parties, often underpinned by distorted ‘facts’ and baffling interpretations. It can be a frustrating experience to read these wilful misinterpretations of left-wing ideas and actions. Unfortunately, the socialist media cannot claim an entirely clean record in this regard either. read full story / add a comment
