An ongoing dispute between members of the Building and Allied Trades Union (BATU) and Collen construction which has led to the jailing of three workers now appears to be escalating into a major dispute between workers and the company. Today (Feb 21st 2006) a picket at one of Collen's sites at University College Dublin (UCD), Belfield managed to halt work despite the presence of 60 hostile Gardai. read full story / add a comment

Don’t feel ashamed if you’ve never heard of the ‘Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill’ currently traversing the Commons. A newspaper database search reveals only 46 mentions of the Bill’s title for the past twelve months – several of which were in such popular journals as Cabinet Maker and Building Design. None of these 46 mentions, incidentally, is earlier than January of this year. The Bill was formerly known as the ‘Bill for Better Regulation’, the title under which it was announced in the Queen’s Speech of May 2005 (there are four additional mentions under this title). It is only in the last few weeks that the bill has had even scant attention in the press. This is something of a shame since, arguably, the Bill is the first step to abolishing the last remnants of parliamentary democracy in Great Britain. read full story / add a comment

A manifestation to show solidarity with the Shelltosea campaign in Ireland took place at the Shell Station at Ullevi in Göteborg on Saturday 18th February as part of the International Day of Action in support of the campaign. The station is located along a dual carriageway which runs near the city centre so the main impact of the action was that lots of passers by saw the banner and placards. The banner read "Bojkatta Shell" while the placards read "SOLIDARITETSAKTION med KAMPANJEN 'Shell To Sea' på IRLAND. Friends of the Earth (Miljöförbundet Jordens Vänner, Göteborg) brought 'along their mobile display box decorated with Shelltosea posters and a Statoil advertisement with "Greenwash" printed accross it. read full story / add a comment

Being a resident of the Liberties, getting accepted into the National College of Art and Design was a wonderful thing. Not only is it one of the top colleges of Ireland but it is a ten minute journey from my house each morning. NCAD has been one of the main landmarks of the Liberties since it moved there in 1980. However, if the plans of the college director go ahead it will be moving to the cultural wasteland of UCD's Belfield campus. The move to UCD is opposed by staff and students alike in both of the colleges. read full story / add a comment

Concerned citizens and activists are planning to hold a vigil next Thursday, 23 February at 5.30pm at The Diamond, Ranelagh, Dublin (and, if possible, also outside Justice Minister McDowell's constituency office) in a bid to force him to implement the law regarding aircraft landing at Shannon Airport. Those planes MUST be searched for suspected torture victims and radioactive weapons. Furthermore, there will be a call to stop the harassment of peace activists who monitor Shannon. read full story / add a comment |
